The Oldenburger is a German riding horse breed . It is named after the main breeding area Oldenburg in Northern Germany with one of the largest German horse breeding associations. There has been evidence that the so-called " Old Oldenburgs " have been bred here since the beginning of the 17th century . Today the Oldenburg is a well-known type of sport horse with great international success.
The Oldenburg show jumping horse is bred separately from the breeding of the Oldenburg horse .
Background information on horse evaluation and breeding can be found under: Exterior , interior and horse breeding .
Exterior
The appearance of the modern Oldenburg corresponds to the strong type of sport horse. He has correct feet and legs and strong, dry limbs.
The Oldenburgs are long-legged, large - framed horses. The legs are strong-boned. The tail is set high. The trunk is broad and well muscled, with a well developed back and pronounced withers . The croup is well muscled and not sloping. Modern Oldenburgers have long and steep shoulders and a strong long neck. The head is medium in size and has a straight profile. The formerly typical of Oldenburg Roman nose , in the modern sport horse type largely disappeared by appropriate Einzüchtung today.
interior
The Oldenburg is a good-natured horse with an extremely strong character. He is brave and sensible. All of his three gaits are easy, expansive and rhythmic . He is also an excellent show jumper and dressage horse .
Breeding history
Horse breeding in Oldenburg reached a high point under Count Anton Günther (1583–1667). The Oldenburger was developed in the 17th century from strong draft and work horses as a strong and elegant carriage horse. In 1923 the Association of Breeders of the Oldenburger Horse eV was founded , which arose from two previous horse breeding associations.
By crossing with thoroughbreds , Hanoverians and Holsteiners , the breed has developed into a noble sport horse type with international successes since the 1950s.
In 2001, an independent show jumping horse breeding association separated from the Oldenburg Association. This operates under the name Springpferdezuchtverband Oldenburg-International eV and breeds the international Oldenburg show jumpers with its own stud book . However, both associations cooperate with each other and operate, among other things, a joint website. In December 2011, the joint umbrella organization of the Oldenburg Horse Breeding Association was founded by both associations .
To distinguish between the breeds, the abbreviation OS is used for show jumping breeding and the abbreviation OL is used for breeding by the association of breeders of the Oldenburg horse.
In 2016, the Association of Breeders of the Oldenburger Horse eV took 3rd place in the worldwide studbook ranking for dressage horses of the WBFSH .
