Marcus Ehning (born April 19, 1974 in Südlohn , Westphalia ) is an internationally successful German show jumper .
Career
Marcus Ehning lives in Borken ( Weseke district ) in Westphalia and, thanks to his horse-loving family, has been with ponies since childhood. He has already won six gold medals in team competitions at European championships in the pony , junior and young rider sectors. In 1998 he got the horse For Pleasure in training, with which his success also continued in the senior sector. One of his greatest successes was his Olympic victory with the team at the 2000 Games in Sydney . The World Cup final victory in Kuala Lumpur in 2006 as well as the victory in the Grand Prix of Aachen should also be added.
Marcus Ehning is a trained wholesale and foreign trade merchant and stands with his horses on the family's own riding facility .
Marcus Ehning was initially nominated for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens with For Pleasure , but had to cancel his start at short notice due to an injury to his horse. In 2010, with Plot Blue, he was part of the German team that won the gold medal at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington (Kentucky) . In the individual ranking he almost reached the round of the best 30 in 27th place, in which he improved to 16th place in the final result. Ehning played his second Olympic Games in London in 2012 with Plot Blue . He took part in the 2014 World Equestrian Games with Cornado NRW and came tenth in the individual ranking.
Marcus Ehning and Cornado NRW were nominated for the 2016 Olympic Games . However, this represented himself after the warm-up jumping, one day before the start of the show jumping competitions, whereupon Ehning decided not to start in order to avoid health risks. At the request of the team, he stayed in Rio de Janeiro and supported the German riders as a trainer. A few weeks later Ehning was part of the victorious German team at the Nations Cup finals in Barcelona with Pret a Tout . At the 2017 European Championships , Ehning was the best German rider with Pret a Tout .
Twelve years after his first victory, Marcus Ehning won the Aachen Grand Prix again in 2018 . Four months earlier, he narrowly missed out on winning another Rolex Grand Slam , in 's-Hertogenbosch he finished second with Cornado NRW . After Aachen he was able to continue his series of successes, in the following six weeks he was first or second in the Grand Prix of Valkenswaard (CSI 5 *), Münster (CSI 4 *) and Brussels-Wolvertem (CSI 5 *). With victories in the Grand Prix of Aachen and Geneva, Ehning was the second rider to win a bonus prize money in the Rolex Grand Slam .
At the European Championships in 2019 Ehning competed with the stallion Comme il faut and secured 5th place in the individual ranking after team silver.
From July to December 2009 he was the leader in the world rankings. He held this position from August 2005 to January 2007 without interruption.
Private
Since June 24th, 2009 he has been married to his longtime partner, the former vaulting artist Nadia Zülow (now Ehning). The marriage has so far had four children.
His younger brother Johannes Ehning is also active as a show jumper.
Awards
In April 2008, Marcus Ehning was the Association of German sports journalists with the Fair Play Trophy awarded the association. He received the award from Hans Günter Winkler for his voluntary renunciation of victory in the Best of Champions , a test with horse change at the CHIO Aachen 2007. After his horse For Germany refused to take part in the test among all three competitors and rose was, he rode past the last obstacle voluntarily, which was assessed as a refusal and elimination, which in these special regulations resulted in a score of 24 points. Since he, like two other starters, only had 4 more penalty points with other horses, a jump-off was necessary. Ehning decided not to take part in the jump-off and voluntarily contented himself with third place.
