German Classics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Classics were an international equestrian event that took place annually from 1989 to 2013 . It took place in Hanover since 2001 and was considered Northern Germany's largest indoor riding tournament. The organizers are the Equestrian Sports Association Hannover e. V. and PST Paul Schockemöhle Marketing GmbH.

history

The German Classics were held for the first time in 1989, when the event took place in the Bremen City Hall. The German Classics were brought into being by Paul Schockemöhle together with Ion Țiriac . The tournament was organized by the equestrian marketing company Escon-Marketing and its managing director Dr. Kaspar Funke. His then business partner Paul Schockemöhle was active here as the tournament director.

The focus of the German Classics at that time was the German Classics overall ranking, which consisted of a team ranking in the style of a Nations Cup and a second individual assessment test, the Grand Prix, on the following day.

In 1997, Schockemöhle and Funke began to part ways in the legal dispute due to allegations of irregularities in the bookkeeping of events vis-à-vis Funke. Out of court, an agreement was reached in 2001 on the future of German Classics, among other things: Paul Schockemöhle, who gave the event its name, received the rights to the name German Classics . Kaspar Funke, on the other hand, took over the tournament location in Bremer Stadthalle and carried out the Euroclassics here from 2000 to 2013 in the style of the previous German Classics ( i.e. with team and individual overall ratings ).

As a result, Schockemöhle met with the managing director of the equestrian marketing company EN GARDE Marketing , Volker Wulff, and have since organized various equestrian tournaments in Germany. In addition, PST Paul Schockemöhle Marketing also organizes several tournaments independent of EN GARDE, including the “new” German Classics, which took place in Hanover from autumn 2001.

The tournament was already in jeopardy in 2013 due to the lack of sponsors. Schockemöhle was often responsible for parts of the tournament funding. In April 2014, the organizers announced the final end of the tournament. In addition to the lack of sponsors, the NDR continued to reduce its equestrian broadcasts and did not plan to broadcast the German Classics live in 2014.

The tournament

Since autumn 2001 the German Classics have taken place in Hall 2 on the Expo exhibition grounds in Hanover. The sporting focus of the tournament was on show jumping and four-in-hand driving . In addition, national dressage tests took place.

Show jumping

The tournament was mostly held as a CSI 4 *. In the founding year 2001, the German Classics initially adopted the old German Classics rules with team and individual ratings. In 2002 the program was adapted to the new Riders Tour created in 2000 , which stopped in Hanover from this year on. The German Classics Hanover was traditionally the penultimate stage of the Riders Tour.

Winners list

In 2001 the team championship was won by the Swiss team ( Markus Fuchs , Willi Melliger , Urs Fäh , Dehlia Ouevray ). Markus Fuchs also won the individual ranking with Tinka's Boy .

After Otto Becker's victory in the Grand Prix of 2008, he announced the end of his career, which was initially planned for December 2008.

The Grand Prix was held as an international class S jumping competition with a winning round or as a class S jumping competition with two rounds , the height of the obstacles is up to 1.55 meters. In 2013, the examination was endowed with 75,000 euros.

The German Classics was one of the most important driving tournaments in Germany.
