Gerco Bernardus Schröder (born July 28, 1978 in Tubbergen ) is a Dutch show jumper and two-time silver medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics .
In September 2012 he was ranked 13th in the FEI's show jumping world rankings .
Private
Schröder was born the youngest of three brothers, the son of a farmer. His older brothers Ben Schröder and Wim Schröder are also show jumpers.
Career
Gerco Schröder initially wanted to succeed his father and become a farmer. He started riding at the age of seven. At the request of his brother Wim, he took over a pony and achieved his first successes in equestrian sports with it. As a result, Gerco Schröder also concentrated on his sports career. At the beginning of his professional activity he worked as a rider in the training and trading stable, which brother Ben Schröder built up from his father's farm.
Schröder celebrated his first major international success when he became European Young Rider Champion in 1996 with Calypso . Two years later he succeeded in doing this again with Geneve , and also won the gold medal here with the team. During this time Gerco Schröder also changed employers: on the recommendation of his brother Wim, he switched to the Eurocommerce stable, where he worked as a rider.
At the 2004 Summer Olympics , he rode fourth in a team with Wim Schröder, Leopold van Asten and Gert-Jan Bruggink . Together with Jeroen Dubbeldam , Piet Raijmakers and Albert Zoer , he won team gold at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen . A year later, with the Dutch team in the saddle of Berlin, he also won gold at the European Championships in Mannheim.
In 2010 he won the Dutch championship. Gerco Schröder took second place in the Nations Cup in Aachen with Berlin . He reached fourth place twice with New Orleans at the 2011 European Championships . In the individual ranking he was on the gold course until the last jump, but tore it and slipped out of the medal ranks.
At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he won the silver medal in the saddle of London in both individual and team jumping.
After the Olympic Games, Schröder was initially deprived of several of his horses, including London . This was due to financial problems at Eurocommerce, which were already known from the Olympic Games. After the games, the horses were confiscated by the Dutch Rabobank as Eurocommerce was in bankruptcy . Due to an agreement between the bank and the company lawyer, Schröder was able to ride two horses again at the Global Champions Tour tournament in Vienna, where he took third place in the main test with London and won € 45,000 in prize money.
As a result of the bankruptcy, the horses of Eurocommerce were auctioned in April 2014. Gaston Glock bought the stallion London at the auction and made it available to Gerco Schröder as part of a sponsorship agreement. Most of the horses that Gerco Schöder has been presenting in the sport since then are owned by Gaston Glock or Glock HPC NL BV In addition, Schröder concentrated again on the training and trading stables run together with his brothers.
