Abdullah Walid asch-Sharbatly ( Arabic عبد الله وليد الشربتلي, DMG ʿAbdallāh Walīd aš-Šarbatlī , born September 21, 1982 in London , United Kingdom ) is a Saudi Arabian show jumper . Mostly the spelling Abdullah Al-Sharbatly , based on the English transcription , is used for his name .

Career

At the age of seven he began to ride in England, at the age of 17 he became an Arab master.

At the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, asch-Scharbatly won the individual silver medal.

In 2012 he won the bronze medal on Sultan at the Olympic Games in London with the Saudi team. At the Asian Games in 2014 , he won the individual gold medal with Callahan and silver with the team.

At the beginning of his career he was coached by Peter Charles , since 2010 he and his teammates have been training with Stanny von Paesschen in Wisbecq .

Doping and illicit medication

In January 2006 his horse Quatro tested positive for testosterone in Abu Dhabi , whereupon he was banned for six months from January to June 2007.

At the end of May 2012, al-Sharbatly, together with his compatriot Chalid al-'Aid , was banned by the FEI for eight months with retroactive effect from February 24, 2012. The reason was the discovery of prohibited medications in a doping test of asch-Scharbatly's horse Lobster , here the substances phenylbutazone and oxyphenbutazone were detected. Both challenged the judgment before the CAS , which shortened the bans to two months each for al-'Aid and ash-Scharbatly. The reason given was the lesser severity of the offense. The judgment has been criticized on various occasions, including the International Jumping Riders Club as a representative of the interests of show jumpers active in international top-class sport. He claims to have taken note of the CAS ruling with surprise, as heavier penalties would have been imposed in earlier times compared with similar incidents. The principle of equality for all riders should be guaranteed. It is also about the credibility of the CAS, at a moment when the FEI is running an extensive clean sport program.

Private

Abdullah al-Sharbatly is married and lives in Jeddah . He speaks English, German and French.
