World Equestrian Games 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2010 World Equestrian Games took place from September 25 to October 10, 2010 in Lexington, Kentucky .

The 2010 World Equestrian Games are the world championships in the following eight equestrian disciplines:

organization

preparation

After Lexington had already applied to host the World Equestrian Games in 2006 , the Executive Committee of the World Federation, the FEI , decided on September 18, 2002 to give priority to the application from Aachen. At the same time, however, it was decided to consider Lexington's application and select it as the venue for the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

This is the first time that the World Equestrian Games, which have been held since 1990, were held outside of Europe.

execution

In total, the German TV channels ARD , WDR , ZDF and the ZDFinfokanal broadcast around 28 hours of the 2010 World Equestrian Games, 20 hours of which were live. Eurosport broadcast over 20 hours of the 2010 World Equestrian Games, most of them live. The Swiss broadcaster SF Zwei broadcasted just over 4 hours of the individual competition of the show jumping riders. The highest known audience ratings in Germany were 6.7% each for the nightly live broadcasts of the team finals and the top 30 show jumping riders.

The World Equestrian Games were opened during the opening ceremony by the President of the FEI , Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein and local politicians. Probably Kentucky's best-known son, Muhammad Ali , also attended the opening ceremony . The flag bearer of the German team was Isabell Werth .

As a demonstration sport , competitions of the Mounted Games were held during the World Equestrian Games .

criticism

On the part of the riders, there was sometimes clear criticism of the organizer. Jos Lansink , 2006 world show jumping champion , criticizes:

“Every two-star tournament in Europe is better organized. For days there was no heating and no warm water for the carers. You know beforehand that you need heating and water. There are always problems, but that's too much. "

In addition, the ancillary costs such as hotel and catering prices at the World Equestrian Games were described as overpriced.

After the first individual evaluation of the dressage riders with disabilities (Grade III) , there was again criticism of the organizer, who had incorrectly measured the dressage arena , which a Belgian blind dressage rider noticed during her ride. The Belgian team declined the offer to repeat the test for individual participants. She called for a new event for all participants , calling on the FEI's grand arbitration panel .

The President of the German Equestrian Association, Breido Graf zu Rantzau , summed up that the United States had been overwhelmed with hosting the tournament and that hosting World Equestrian Games in Europe was the better choice. This is also more affordable for most equestrian nations.

venue

Kentucky Horse Park
The riding hall (covered area)

The 2010 World Equestrian Games were held in the Kentucky Horse Park , an area of almost 500 hectares. The venue has traditionally hosted equestrian events such as the Rolex Kentucky Three Day . The 1978 World Eventing Championships also took place in the Kentucky Horse Park.

The main stadium of the Kentucky Horse Park was rebuilt and expanded for the 2010 World Equestrian Games. After the renovation, this will have 7,500 seats, and 22,500 seats have also been created on temporary stands at the main stadium. The main stadium was the venue for the dressage and show jumping competitions as well as for the dressage and show jumping competitions of the eventing competitions.

The second pre-existing competition site is the covered area. The dressage competitions for riders with disabilities were held here. The hall holds 1,100 spectators.

The "Indoor Arena" is a completely new building that was built permanently. This hall holds 6,000 spectators (can be expanded up to 10,000 spectators) and was used as a venue for reining and vaulting competitions during the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

The Fahrstadion, a temporary new building, offers space for 6,000 spectators. The dressage and obstacle driving tests for the four-in-hand drivers took place here.

Also located on the site is the cross-country course of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day, which served as the venue for the partial cross-country test for eventing riders and four-in-hand drivers.

The distance rider route also ran several times over the grounds of the Kentucky Horse Park.

Test tournaments

The test tournaments for the 2010 World Equestrian Games were held from April 19 to April 25. On the one hand, the traditional Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event (CCI 4 *) was advertised as a test tournament. Here the British eventing rider William Fox-Pitt won with Cool Mountain . The test tournaments in show jumping (CSI 2 *) and dressage (CDI 3 *) were held in parallel.

Reining

  • 63 participants

The participating nations were each allowed to send four riders, each with one horse, to the reining competitions at the World Equestrian Games. A replacement couple was also allowed to be sent.

The first partial test was the team competition, which was held over a period of two days. The three best results for the respective team counted. The first partial examination also counted as qualification for the individual evaluation. The best 15 rider-horse pairs qualified directly for the final, ranks 16 to 37 moved into another qualification test. From this, in addition to the top 15 from the first partial test, the top 5 from the second qualification test moved in. In the final of the individual evaluation, the medal winners of the individual evaluation were determined.

Team ranking

The team competition took place on September 25th and 26th, 2010.

As expected, the United States team won the team championship in reining. The horse of the first German team rider Nico Hörmann, Mister Dual Spring , slipped in the team competition and touched the ground with its rear end. This led to a zero rating for him, so he was the result of the cancellation for the German team (which reached sixth place).

Individual evaluation

The individual evaluation took place over several qualification tests, the decisive test took place on September 30, 2010, starting at 1:00 p.m. (7:00 p.m. CEST ).

The final test was reached by two German and Austrian horse-rider pairs. Two other couples from Austria, Dennis Schulz with Laredo Whiz and Markus Morawitz with Spin me a deal , made it through the qualifying test from places 17 to 37 (place 15 was awarded twice in the team ranking). However, these did not make the final qualification. The multiple Olympic champion in dressage, Anky van Grunsven with Whizashiningwalla BB , finished eighth with the Dutch team in 39th place in the team competition.

The American rider Shawn Flarida, who was considered one of the favorites for the individual victory in reining, tore off a piece of leather girth on his stirrup during his ride. He got out of step and had to hold on to the horn of his saddle for a moment, which resulted in considerable deductions. In the further ride, he and his horse Fancy Step did not achieve the usual form and finished the test in 21st and last place.

Endurance riding

  • 100 participants

The participating nations were each allowed to send five endurance riders with a total of up to six horses to the World Equestrian Games.

The individual and team decisions were held in a competition, with the latter three or four riders forming a team (the best three results per team were included in the evaluation). At the 2010 World Equestrian Games, the route was 160 kilometers long and divided into six sections.

Between the individual sections, veterinary examinations were carried out at the so-called " VetGates " with mandatory breaks for the horses.

Team ranking

The team competition took place on September 26, 2010, starting at 7:00 a.m. (1:00 p.m. CEST ).

dressage

Hayley Beresford (Australia) with Relampago do Retiro , Grand Prix de Dressage at the 2010 World Equestrian Games
  • 66 participants

The participating nations were each allowed to send four dressage riders, each with one horse, to the World Equestrian Games.

The first partial test was the Grand Prix de Dressage . All dressage riders participating in the World Equestrian Games competed. Each team consisted of three or four riders from one nation, of which the three best results went into the team ranking. The team medals were awarded on the basis of this team ranking.

The best 30 participants in the Grand Prix de Dressage were allowed to take part in the second test, the Grand Prix Spécial . The individual medals of the Grand Prix Spécial were awarded on the basis of the result of the Grand Prix Spécial.

The dressage riders who made it into the top 15 of the individual ranking of the Grand Prix Spécial were allowed to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle . If more than three riders from one or more nations had made it into the top 15 of the Grand Prix Spécial, the lowest-placed (fourth) rider of the respective nation would not have been allowed to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle. For this purpose, another rider would have moved up after the Grand Prix Spécial was placed.

In the Grand Prix Freestyle, the individual medals of the Grand Prix Freestyle were awarded.

Team ranking

Steffen Peters with Ravel , Grand Prix de Dressage (World Equestrian Games 2010)

The team competition took place on September 27th and 28th, 2010.

The 2010 World Equestrian Games marked the end of a series in dressage: For the first time since 1970, the German dressage team remained at world championships without a gold medal. The victory in the team classification went to the favored team of the Dutch, who had already won gold at the 2009 European Championships. This victory came despite the weakening of the Dutch team. Adelinde Cornelissen, who is considered the second best rider in the team, was disqualified and disqualified in the Grand Prix due to a bloody mouth on her horse Parzival .

Due to a very strong performance of the British final rider Laura Bechtolsheimer (according to her own statement, the best ride of her life so far), the British team achieved second place. Thanks to their final rider, the native German Steffen Peters, the Americans still had the chance to oust the German team from bronze. With 78.596%, Peters achieved by far the best result of his team, but about 2.5% were missing to reach the medal rank.

Austria and Switzerland did not send teams to the dressage competitions, but individual riders started for the countries. The qualification for the Grand Prix Spécial of the best 30 couples was missed by the Swiss starter Elisabeth Eversfield-Koch with The Lion King B , who finished 40th in the Grand Prix with 66.340%.

Individual ranking (Grand Prix Spécial)

The individual classification in the Grand Prix Spécial took place on September 29, 2010, starting at 10:00 a.m. (4:00 p.m. CEST ).

The Grand Prix Spécial was again characterized by the dominance of Totilas and Edward Gal, who won the test with a lead of around four percent. Laura Bechtolsheimer was again very strong, finishing second with Mistral Hojris . For the first time in decades, all German riders in the individual ranking of a dressage world championship were without a medal. The most experienced German rider, Isabell Werth, approached the Grand Prix Spécial with a high risk in order to preserve the small chance of a medal. This failed, however, she was only tenth. The best participant from the German-speaking area was Christoph Koschel with Donnperignon in 6th place. Anabel Balkenhol was also in eighth place ahead of Isabell Werth, after she had fallen short of expectations in the Grand Prix with Dablino and only achieved 67.702%.

In the Grand Prix Spécial, all participants from German-speaking nations achieved the placement in the top fifteen required for participation in the Grand Prix Freestyle. Due to the regulations that limit the number of participants in the Grand Prix Freestyle to three participants per nation, Matthias Alexander Rath, as the German participant with the lowest percentage in the Grand Prix Spécial, was not allowed to take part in the Freestyle.

Individual evaluation (Grand Prix Freestyle)

The individual evaluation in the Grand Prix Freestyle took place on October 1, 2010, starting at 7:00 p.m. (October 2, 2010, 1:00 a.m. CEST ).

Edward Gal and Totilas also remained undefeated in the freestyle and won gold by more than five percent. In addition to Edward Gal and the local favorite Steffen Peters, the Spaniard Juan Manuel Muñoz Diaz with his PRE stallion Fuego also became a crowd favorite. His clearly show-oriented freestyle resulted in cheers and standing ovations from the American audience during the ride, the judge's rating of 81.450% was accordingly acknowledged with angry whistles from the audience.

versatility

  • 81 participants

The participating nations were each allowed to send six riders, each with one horse, to the eventing competitions of the World Equestrian Games. Of these, four participants per nation formed the respective team, of which the three best results went into the team evaluation. The other two riders only competed in the individual classification. The team medals were awarded on the basis of this team ranking.

The penalty points achieved in the partial exams were added up and the individual and team scores were determined on the basis of this result.

The cross-country course was built by the Briton Mike Etherington-Smith, who built the cross-country courses for the 2000 and 2008 Olympic Games and is also planned to build the course for the 2012 Olympic Games. The cross-country course was laid out on the level of a CCI 4 *. It was sometimes seen as too difficult, but this opinion was not unanimously taken.

Team ranking

The team evaluation took place on September 30th, 2010 as well as October 1st (dressage test), October 2nd (terrain test) and October 3rd (jumping competition).

Victory in the eventing rider team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games went to the British team. The German team, which was still in the lead after the dressage, was weakened by the fall of Dirk Schrade, but was able to achieve the best placement of a team without a cancellation result in this ranking with fifth place. The host team of the United States was still on the silver medal rank after the cross-country ride, but slipped to fourth place in the jumping.

Individual evaluation

The individual evaluation took place on September 30th 2010 as well as October 1st (dressage test), October 2nd (terrain test) and October 3rd (jumping competition).

The victory in this classification went to Michael Jung, who was already in the lead from dressage and did not give up. The German individual rider Simone Deitermann was ranked third in the individual ranking after the dressage and remained fault-free in the terrain up to the penultimate obstacle, but then supported the last obstacle, which led to the elimination. After the cross-country course, the US individual rider Rebecca "Becky" Holder was in third place, but her horse Courageous Comet initially failed the constitutional test and was not presented at the second attempt. Thereupon Ingrid Klimke moved up from fourth to third, but she had several jumping errors with Abraxxas , so that she fell back to 13th in the starting field due to the narrow gaps between the results. In addition to Michael Jung, the second placed William Fox-Pitt and the third placed Andrew Nicholson also stayed clear after the dressage and won their individual medals with this performance.

The participating nations were each allowed to send five show jumpers, each with one horse, to the World Equestrian Games. Four rider-horse pairs each then took part in the team competition. The fifth rider served as a reserve and, as long as no other team rider of his nation failed before the start of the competitions, was not allowed to start.

The mode initially consisted of three partial tests with a total of five laps. The first special stage was a time jump . The winner of the time jumping was awarded zero penalty points after the test. The time difference between the winner and the other riders was multiplied by 0.5 and thus resulted in their number of penalty points.

The decision about the team medals was made in the second special stage. This test was held as a jumping competition with two rounds . The penalty points from the first test were carried over to the second test. Only the ten best teams started in the second round after the first round. The remaining riders took part in the second round only as individual riders. After the second round, the team medals were awarded. If two or more teams had been tied for first place after the second round, a jump-off would have decided the award of the gold medal.

The best 30 individual riders qualified for the third partial test after the first two special tests. The previous penalty points were retained. It was another time a jumping competition with two rounds. After the two rounds, the places 30 to 5 in the individual ranking were determined.

The best four rider-horse pairs after the previous jumping competitions of the World Equestrian Games 2010 had to start in another competition, a jumping competition with horse change over four rounds. The penalty points from the previous jumping competitions were not taken. Each of the four riders started first with their own horse, then with the horses of their three competitors from this final test.

If no winner had been determined due to the equality of penalty points, unlike at the 2006 World Equestrian Games, no jump-off would have decided on the medal award. Since the 2010 World Equestrian Games, the winner in the event of a tie after changing horses would be determined based on the score after the second round of the third partial test. This rule did not apply in 2010.

The course builder for the show jumping competitions was Conrad Homfeld . He was supported by the German, internationally known course designer Frank Rothenberger as the technical delegate .

Team ranking

The French team, silver medalists in show jumping

The team evaluation tests took place on the following days:

  • Time jumping test on October 4th
  • rounds 1 and 2 as well as the possible jump-off on October 5th and 6th (after CEST due to the time difference on October 5th and 7th)

For the third time after 1994 and 1998, a German show jumping team won the gold medal at World Equestrian Games. For the first time ever, a second rider was represented in this German jumping team and the gender ratio was balanced. After a very good start with 1st place in the team and two riders in the lead in the individual classification after the time jumping test, the home team of the United States of America lost a lot of ground and found itself in 10th place at the end of the test. The Swiss team did not make it to the second round and suffered a second heavy defeat after being relegated from the Nations Cup .

Individual evaluation

The individual evaluation tests took place on the following days:

  • Time jumping test on October 4th
  • the team evaluation, which also counts for the individual evaluation, on October 5th and 6th (after CEST due to the time difference on October 5th and 7th)
  • Examination of the best 30 on October 8th (after CEST due to the time difference on October 8th and 9th)
  • Final test of the best four with horse change on October 9th (after CEST due to the time difference on October 10th)

The victory in the individual ranking went to the Belgian Philippe Le Jeune, who succeeds his compatriot Jos Lansink as world champion of show jumping. In 17th place, like the other participants in the final test of 2006 (2010: Edwina Alexander in 13th place, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum in 30th place, Beezie Madden not in the US team), he did not qualify for the final with horse change. A surprise is the silver medal win by Abdullah asch-Scharbatly, who had just bought his horse Seldana a few months earlier for 2.5 million euros with the aim of qualifying for the 2012 Olympics.

Carsten-Otto Nagel barely missed a final, who was placed in fifth place in the final ranking by 0.17 points behind fourth in the intermediate ranking due to a drop in the first round of the third jumping competition. Rolf-Göran Bengtsson is also one of the losers of the 3rd partial test , who recorded a throw with Ninja in the second round of this test (in which relatively few throws were made) and fell back to 6th place with 9.37 penalty points.

In the horse evaluation of the final test, Hickstead (the horse of the Canadian Eric Lamaze) was in first place with no mistakes .

Dressage for disabled riders

  • 107 participants

The dressage competitions for riders with disabilities took place for the first time in 2010 as part of the World Equestrian Games.

For each participating nation, seven handicapped dressage riders could be sent to the World Equestrian Games with one horse each. The host country also had the opportunity to start three more horse-rider pairs.

The team evaluation followed a complex set of rules in order to make the performance of the participants with different degrees of handicap comparable in terms of sport. A team was made up of up to four riders from each nation, with the three best results being included in the rating. At least one rider per team had to be assigned to grades Ia , Ib or II . In addition, the rule was that no more than three riders per team were allowed to belong to one grade. The team competition consisted of two special stages. The second team test after which the team medals are awarded is called the championship test. In both valuation tests, specific, fixed tasks were ridden for each grade.

The individual evaluation was carried out separately from the team evaluation. The first partial test was the second team test. The second part of the individual evaluation was the freestyle, in which the riders put together the prescribed lessons individually for an examination. Two world champions were determined per grade, one in the championship test and one in the freestyle. So, with the team test, a total of eleven sets of medals were awarded.

The team competition took place from October 5th to October 7th, starting at 8:30 a.m. (2:30 p.m. CEST ).

Vaulting

  • 188 participants

The participating nations were each allowed to send three male and three female individual vaulters, each with one horse. Furthermore, each participating nation was allowed to send a team to make decisions in group vaulting at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

At the beginning, both the individual vaulters and the groups completed a compulsory test and a freestyle test .

The best 15 women and men as well as the best twelve groups from the first partial test were allowed to take part in the final. The individual athletes completed both a technique program and a freestyle program, whereas the groups only competed in the freestyle.

The individual performances were assessed by six tournament judges, two of whom were solely responsible for assessing the horses and four for assessing the freestyle exercises. After the two partial tests, the medals of the individual vaulters women, the individual vaulters men and the groups were awarded based on the average of the individual partial tests. If the scores were equal in the overall ranking, the better duty would have decided.

Team ranking

The first compulsory test of the team evaluations took place on October 6th, the first freestyle test on October 8th (freestyle 1) and the freestyle of the best 15 (freestyle 2) on October 10th.

The winner was the US team FACE , followed by the German and Austrian teams. During all team tests, these three groups dominated the field. Before the final, there were only minor differences in grades.

After the compulsory competition, the Americans were clearly in the lead with a score of 7.207, ahead of the German (7.669) and Austrian teams (6.990). The first round freestyle, however, initially brought a turnaround: after a fall, the US team slipped into third place with a score of 7.655 in the overall standings after round 1 (compulsory + freestyle), while Germany as the winner of the first round with 7.698 points moved into the final. Austria was in second place with 7,664 points.

In the final round on the subject of "The Art of Noise", the German VV Ingelsberg team made an execution error in which one of the vaulters had to leave the horse unintentionally. The German freestyle nevertheless received the third-best rating in the final competition: 8.635. With its interpretation of the ballet " Romeo and Juliet " by Sergei Sergejewitsch Prokofjew, the US team showed an almost flawless and expressive freestyle and was rewarded with a score of 8.779. The Austrians' freestyle on the subject of “ Cirque du Soleil ” was rated marginally better with 8.641 points than the Germans, which in the overall ranking was not enough for the silver medal.

Individual ratings

The first compulsory test of the individual evaluations took place on October 6th, the first freestyle test on October 7th; the technical program of the best 15 took place on October 8th and the free choice of the best 15 on October 9th.

In the women’s category, Brit Joanne Eccles won ahead of Germans Antje Hill and Simone Wiegele . In the men's individual ranking, the Swiss Patric Looser won the gold medal, silver went to the German Kai Vorberg and bronze to the French Nicolas Andréani .

The compulsory test for women was won by Joanne Eccles, Simone Wiegele was second ahead of the American Megan Benjamin , the Danish Rikke Laumann and the American Mary McCormick. Antje Hill was only eighth. After the freestyle test, she improved to third place in the overall ranking of the first round (compulsory + freestyle) with a score of 8.121. Simone Wiegele won the first round with a total of 8.344 points and pushed Joanne Eccles (8.274) into second place. After the technical program, Simone Wiegel lost two places due to poor execution and was in third place before the final, behind Joanne Eccles and Antje Hill. This ranking was also retained in the final result.

After the compulsory test for men, Gero Meyer from Germany came first, ahead of Kai Vorberg, Patric Looser, Austrian Stefan Csandl and Czech Petr Eim . Looser already improved to first place in the overall ranking of the first round with 8.524 points after the freestyle. Kai Vorberg (8.366) and Gero Meyer (8.288) slipped to ranks three and four, while Nicolas Andréani improved to second place with an overall score of 8.405. In the second round Kai Vorberg was able to regain second place in the overall standings with an unbeatable technology program, Patric Looser defended his first place and Nicolas Andréani, with slight weaknesses in the technology program, took third place in the overall standings. Gero Meyer showed weaknesses in execution due to an irregular gallop of his horse and slipped to fifth place behind Stefan Csandl. As with the women, nothing changed in the second round in the top 3 position before and after the final.

Drive

Team driver at the 2010 World Equestrian Games
  • 37 participants

The four-in-hand drivers represent driving at the World Equestrian Games. Three drivers from each nation were allowed to take part in the driving competitions with their teams, the host country also received three additional starting places. Each team consists of four horses plus one other horse for exchange. Three teams with their drivers formed a team, only one team was allowed per nation.

In the four-in-hand driving competitions, three partial tests were contested as part of the 2010 World Equestrian Games: driving dressage, marathon driving and obstacle driving. Two drivers per team were scored, but the deletion result in the individual partial tests could come from different drivers.

For the team result, the two best results of the respective sub-discipline were counted for the team result, so that the worst driver of a team in dressage, marathon and obstacle driving always delivered the deleted result. The results were added up so that the team medals were awarded based on this evaluation.

The individual evaluation was also formed by adding up the results of the three partial tests.

Team ranking

The team competition for four-in-hand drivers took place from October 7th to 10th.

Medal table

The most successful nation at the World Equestrian Games in 2010 was Great Britain, which collected medals mainly through its dressage riders with and without disabilities as well as through its eventing riders. In front of their home crowd, the athletes from the United States only achieved fourth place in the medal table. Because the dressage riders with disabilities participated for the first time, significantly more medals were awarded than four years earlier in Aachen, a total of 81.
