Steffen Peters (born September 18, 1964 in Wesel ) is an American dressage rider of German origin.

Career

From Germany to the United States

Steffen Peters grew up in Germany and started riding his own pony at the age of seven, with which he also performed at dressage shows in his free time. At sixteen he received the horse Udon , on which he won Olympic bronze many years later.

He began professional training in Johann Hinnemann's riding stables in Voerde , where he met the American trainer Laurie Falvo . This invited him to training in their riding stables in San Diego , where he was staying in the summer of 1984. After completing his military service in Germany, he finally moved to San Diego in 1985 and became an American citizen in 1992.

successes

At the 1996 Summer Olympics , he won the bronze medal on Udon with the US dressage team and took 14th place in the individual competition. At the 2004 Summer Olympics , he took part as a substitute rider for the US team. At the World Equestrian Games in 2006 he won team bronze and took fourth place in the individual ranking on Floriano .

At the riding competitions in Hong Kong as part of the 2008 Summer Olympics , he was (together with Courtney King and Debbie McDonald ) again part of the American dressage team, where he competed on Ravel as the last rider of the team competition (August 14). The team finished fourth but was later disqualified. Five days later, Peters also took fourth place in the individual competition.

He celebrated one of the greatest successes of his career at the 2009 World Cup finals in Las Vegas . Hailed as a big surprise by the media, he and Ravel won both the Grand Prix de Dressage and the decisive Grand Prix Freestyle and was thus the 2008/2009 World Cup winner. With victories in the Grand Prix, the Grand Prix Spécial and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the CDIO 5 * as part of the CHIO Aachen (all three with Ravel ), he was able to continue his successful streak.

At the World Dressage Masters competition in Wellington (Florida) in February 2010, he finished second with Ravel , only Anky van Grunsven achieved a better result in the Grand Prix Freestyle with Salinero . In preparation for the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington (Kentucky) , he decided not to take part in the 2010 World Cup finals, for which he was pre-qualified as last year's winner .

At the 2010 World Equestrian Games , Peters won bronze with Ravel in the Grand Prix Spécial and in the Grand Prix Freestyle. In addition, he reached fourth place with the team. The 2011 Pan American Games were also highly successful for Peters . Here he and the team won the team classification (a Prix St. Georges ) and also the individual classification (up to Intermediaire II ) - both with Weltino's Magic .

At the 2012 Summer Olympics , Steffen Peters and Ravel came 17th in the Grand Prix Freestyle, which counts for the individual ranking, with 77.286 percent. In the Grand Prix they came in sixth and in the Grand Prix Spécial they came seventh. In the team standings, the United States team came in sixth place. Ravel's career came to an end with the Olympic Games and has been ridden by his owners for leisure since then.

Ravel's successor in Steffen Peters' stable was the brown gelding Legolas . Together with this, Peters became American champion in June 2014. The dressage World Cup final in Las Vegas in mid-April 2015 was not very happy for Steffen Peters: His Westphalian Legolas was bleeding on his side after the ride, and the rider's spurs were also bloody. Then Peters was disqualified. Much better ran for Steffen Peters with Legolas the Pan American Games in 2015 , where he won the gold medal in singles and also won the team of the United States team gold.

In August 2009 he finished second in the (horse-related) FEI world dressage rankings with Ravel .
