The stallion Totilas (2000-2020; nickname " Toto ", formerly Moorlands Totilas ) was an internationally successful dressage horse of the Dutch Warmblood (KWPN) breed . Together with his former rider Edward Gal , the 1.70 m tall, black lacquer stallion temporarily held the records in the three most difficult dressage tests .
Sporting successes
Early years
Totilas, born on May 23, 2000, was bred by Jan K. Schuil and Anna Visser in Broeksterwâld (Broeksterwoude) .
Totilas made his first big appearance at the World Championships for five-year-old dressage horses in Verden in 2005. Still ridden by Jiska van den Akker, Totilas was already rated by sports journalists as the best Dutch horse in the starting field. In the final test he came fourth here.
Success with Edward Gal
Totilas was owned by the Dutch Moorlands Stables , the main sponsor of Edward Gals. In 2006 he got the opportunity to ride Totilas. At this time the six-year dominated black stallion only a few basic lessons. However, Gal claims to have felt an incredible power and energy in Totilas from the beginning.
Gal celebrated their first big success with Totilas when they won the Dutch championships in summer 2009 with an average of 81.394% (86.700% of which in the Grand Prix Freestyle). Until 2008, the international dressage competitions were largely dominated by Anky van Grunsven and Isabell Werth , with this victory over Anky van Grunsven the reputation of Totilas as a “wonder horse” began.
Two weeks later, Gal and Totilas also won the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the CHIO Rotterdam (the latter with 84.500%). As a result, Gal and Totilas were nominated for the Dutch team at the 2009 European Championships . Both achieved the gold medal with the team and the silver medal in the Grand Prix Spécial. In the Grand Prix Freestyle they also achieved the gold medal, with a result of 84.085% in the Grand Prix de Dressage and a result of 90.750% in the Grand Prix Freestyle, they set two world records.
This led to a discussion about the "miracle horse" Totilas. Critics particularly questioned the very pronounced work of the front legs in a strong trot as a natural movement of a horse. The discussion climaxed at the “Global Dressage Forum” in 2009 when the speaker there, the dressage trainer Ton de Ridder, the theme “Totilas” with the words “He (Totilas) is a crowd favorite. It fills the stands and we should be grateful for it ”tried to finish. This, in turn, was commented on by a German journalist at the event with the words: “It is hypocritical that we cannot discuss the horse in public while everyone is saying something different about him in the background.” Totila's strong trot does not correspond to the FEI manual and "that is what needs to be discussed."
On December 16, 2009, Gal and Totilas topped their own world record in the Grand Prix Freestyle, when they won the World Cup Freestyle in London's Olympia Hall with 92.300%. They held this record for four years. In addition, at the end of March 2010 they won the World Cup finals for dressage riders . Gal and Totilas also defended the Dutch championship title in summer 2010.
Gal and Totilas set a third world record at the CHIO Aachen . Here they won the Grand Prix Spécial des CDIO 5 * with 86.458% (The judges' individual scores included the highest score of ten 28 times). This record was replaced by Charlotte Dujardin at the end of April 2012 .
At the 2010 World Equestrian Games , Edward Gal and Totilas won gold in the team standings with the Netherlands and gold in the individual standings in the Grand Prix Spécial and in the Grand Prix Freestyle.
The success of Totilas, combined with the aforementioned discussion, led to lively audience interest in the dressage tests in which Totilas took part. At the CHIO Aachen 2010, the Deutsche Bank Stadium , which was already very large with around 5000 seats, had to be cordoned off due to the rush of visitors.
On October 14, 2010, the previous owner Cees Visser (Moorlands Stables BV) announced the sale of Totilas. The buyer of the horse, Paul Schockemöhle , confirmed the purchase on October 26, 2010. As part of the purchase confirmation, Schockemöhle also announced that Totilas would also be presented in sport in the future. The media reported a sales price in the range of 10 to 15 million euros, which would correspond to the highest price ever paid for a dressage horse (the record amount for the sale of a dressage horse was 2.5 million euros up to then). Paul Schockemöhle then formed a community of owners with Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff .
Totilas with Matthias Alexander Rath
Linsenhoff's stepson Matthias Alexander Rath became the new rider of the horse , as Schockemöhle announced on November 30, 2010. For the first time Totilas and Rath competed together in sport at the CDI 3 * Munich-Riem.
At their first joint German championships in 2011 in Balve , Rath and Totilas won the Grand Prix Spécial title. Here they had their first joint appearance in the Grand Prix Freestyle, the freestyle music for this had been composed by Paul van Dyk . With a rating of 85.650%, Rath and Totilas also won. At the CHIO Aachen they won all three individual tests in the CDIO 5 * tour. As a result, Rath and Totilas were nominated for the German European Championship team , where neither could win individual medals.
As a result, several tournament appearances were canceled due to injuries. Totilas and Rath paused for a total of eight months after the 2011 European Championships, only interrupted by two presentations at stallion shows. Both had their first tournament appearance in 2012 at the CDI 4 * Horses & Dreamsin Hagen aTW, where they secured victory in the Grand Prix de Dressage with a significantly more relaxed ride than before (83.809%). Due to an illness of his rider there was no start at the Olympic Games 2012. The rides in Hagen were the last joint tournament appearances for over two years, until May 2014 Totilas and Rath started again at the CDI 3 * Kapellen and were able to do so Assert themselves against the competition in the two ridden competitions Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special. Shortly before the start of the 2014 World Equestrian Games , Totilas kicked himself against an over leg in the training camp, whereupon it was decided to forego participation "for the benefit of the horse". At the European Championships 2015 in AachenRath and Totilas received a rating of 75.971 percent in the team competition and won the bronze medal with the German team. Then Totilas was diagnosed with osteoedema on the left hind leg.
Training methods
At the beginning of 2012 it was announced that Sjef Janssen - the then Dutch national trainer dressage - would take over the training of Matthias Alexander Rath in the future. First of all, he was supposed to train Rath's young horses from now on, but the Dutch association forbade him to do so. It was only after the Olympic Games in summer 2012 that Janssen resigned from his position as national coach and took over training from Matthias Alexander Rath.
Janssen's training methods also include a weakened version of the Rollkur , the so-called LDR ( Low, deep and round ), which Rath's father and trainer, Klaus-Martin Rath, categorically rejected in 2010. When asked about the fact that he had called for a petition for the general abolition of the Rollkur at the time, Klaus-Martin Rath said in early 2012:
“We are against everything that is incompatible with animal welfare. But there is a lot of research that has come to the conclusion: To a certain extent, the roll cure is not harmful. … And by the way, there is much more to Sjef Janssen's system than this method. ... It is part of life that you revise your opinion from time to time. We have dealt intensively with the topic and carefully decided on this path. If something is to be done with our horses that does not correspond to our principles, we will automatically intervene. "
The new training methods were shown publicly for the first time on the warm-up area at the tournament in Hagen aTW in April 2012. Trainer Klaus-Martin Rath said: “Totilas knows the Dutch system, that's how he grew up. Low, deep and round and the German riding theory have different effects. In the end, however, they have the same effect. ”After Rath's rides in the warm-up area in particular had been criticized, the pair was rated significantly more positively after a two-year break.
External impact
In an interview on July 5, 2012, the internationally successful show jumper Ludger Beerbaum wasquestioned about the threat of Rath and Totilas not starting at the Olympic Games at this time. When asked how he rated the hype surrounding Totilas, he said: “To be honest, this is complete showmanship. First there should be athletic performance, then you can talk about favorite roles. But I don't see the athletic performance at the moment. Just because Totilas was expensive is so much talked about, not because of the performance of horse and rider. [...] The whole thing should have been approached differently. I might have bought such a horse or had someone buy it. [...] But then I would have held the ball flat and not come up with any PR numbers. [...] I would have waited until I got my piaffes and passages right
World ranking
In the FEI dressage world rankings, which are based on the combination of rider and horse, Totilas was ranked as the world ranking leader with Edward Gal from the end of 2009 to June 2011. From July 2011 Totilas was listed together with Matthias Alexander Rath. At the beginning of 2012 they were in fourth place. After the long break in competition, the two were able to take this rank again in August 2014.
End of career
On August 18, 2015, its owners, the Linsenhoff-Rath family, in consultation with co-owner Paul Schockemöhle, announced that Totilas would end his sports career. Totilas had not been able to compete in the individual ranking after winning the bronze at the home European championships in Aachen; a bone edema was found in the corolla bone of the left hind leg.
death
Totilas suffered colic on December 14, 2020 . Despite an emergency operation, the stallion died. He was 20 years old.
breed
In addition to the sporting successes, Totilas was initially used in breeding in doses. After the sale to Schockemöhle, Totilas was to be used primarily for breeding in the winter months, while the summer months were intended for the stallion's sporting use. At Ann Kathrin Linsenhoff's "Schafhof" in Kronberg im Taunus , a complete breeding station was set up for the breeding with Totilas.
ancestry
In the stallion line, Totilas is descended from the famous thoroughbreds Dark Ronald and Herold , who, like the Trakehner - stamp stallion Tempelhüter, appear elsewhere in his pedigree.
