organization

preparation

At the FEI General Assembly in Buenos Aires in 2008 it was decided to award the 2011 European Championships in dressage to the Netherlands. Rotterdam had applied as the venue for this.

It was only the second time - after Arnhem 1999 - that the European dressage championship was held in the Netherlands.

Implementation, venue, media

The European Championships opened on Wednesday, August 17, 2011, in the late afternoon. The sporting program began on the morning of that day and, in addition to the competitions of the European championship, also included an international dressage tournament for riders up to 25 years of age as well as national dressage tests.

The event ended with a short closing ceremony on Sunday (August 21, 2011), which took place at 4:45 p.m. The sporting program at the venue of the European Championships will be continued on Wednesday afterwards - with the CHIO Rotterdam, which has been postponed compared to previous years . However, this year its program managed without dressage tests .

The tournament was held in the Rotterdam district of Kralingen, on the CHIO site between Kralingseweg and Kralingse Bos Park.

Parts of the European Championships were broadcast on German-language television by ARD , on Sunday for around an hour. In addition, the FEI broadcast the tournament for a fee. The Dutch television offered on Thursday, Saturday and some on Sunday a Freeview IPTV - Live Stream .

Competitions

General

As in 1991, 1993, 2007 and 2009, nine medals were awarded at the 2011 European Dressage Championships. These were awarded separately in the team competition (the Grand Prix de Dressage ) for the national teams and in the individual competition for the Grand Prix Spécial and the Grand Prix Freestyle .

The number of participants set a new record for the European dressage championships: a total of 64 riders took part in the European championship ranking, 16 of the 21 nations participating had their own teams.

The participating nations were each allowed to send four dressage riders, each with one horse, to the European Championships.

Time schedule

The first partial test was the Grand Prix de Dressage . The exam, which was divided into two parts in the schedule, took place on Wednesday and Thursday.

All dressage riders participating in the European championships took part in this test. Each team consisted of three or four riders from one nation, of which the three best results went into the team ranking. The team medals were awarded on the basis of this team ranking.

The best 30 participants in the Grand Prix de Dressage were allowed to take part in the second test, the Grand Prix Spécial . The individual medals of the Grand Prix Spécial were awarded on the basis of the result of the Grand Prix Spécial. The time of the examination was Saturday. The previous Friday was planned as a day of rest for the horses participating in the European Championships.

The dressage riders who made it into the top 15 of the individual ranking of the Grand Prix Spécial were allowed to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle. If more than three riders from one or more nations made it into the top 15 of the Grand Prix Spécial, the lowest placed (fourth) rider of the respective nation was not allowed to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle. For this purpose, a different rider came up after the placement of the Grand Prix Spécial.

In the Grand Prix Freestyle, which took place on Sunday afternoon, the second set of individual medals was then awarded at these European Championships.

Results

Team ranking

The gold medal at the European Championships in Rotterdam went to a team that had never won this title before: Great Britain. The British team, which did not become European champions at the 1963 European Championships only because of the insufficient number of teams, took the lead on the first day of the Grand Prix. The foundation stone for this was laid by the 26-year-old Charlotte Dujardin , who only contested her first season at Grand Prix level with her horse Valegro in 2011. With a result of 78.830%, Carl Hester's pupil took the lead in the individual evaluation after the first day.

On the second day Laura Bechtolsheimer and especially Carl Hester, who took the lead in the individual classification with his horse Uthopia after both days of the Grand Prix de Dressage, significantly increased the British result.

The German team follows in second place with a clear gap of around 12 percent. The Dutch team follows with another 3.5 percent gap.

The Austrian team started with only three riders and finished the team ranking in eighth place. The team sent by Switzerland came in 14th in the final result.

Qualifying for the Grand Prix Spécial of the best 30 pairs missed the entire Swiss team ( Marcela Krinke Susmelj 39th, Elisabeth Eversfield-Koch ranked 43, Hans Staub is ranked 44 and Markus Graf on rank 51) and the Austrians Peter Gmoser on in 33rd place and Renate Voglsang in 38th place.

A total of 16 teams took part in the evaluation.

Individual ranking (Grand Prix Spécial)

The Grand Prix Spécial was marked by a number of mistakes by almost all favorites. Nevertheless, the British dominance continued in terms of results in the Spécial, but was topped by the success of Adelinde Cornelissen. The Dutch woman defended her title from 2009 with Parzival - although she had lost her way at the beginning of the gallop tour. Charlotte Dujardin took sixth place in the Grand Prix Spécial, Carl Hester and Laura Bechtolsheimer achieved a result of around 80 percent each with their horses, making them second and third. Unexpectedly weak were both medal favorite Matthias Alexander Rath (whose ride with Totilas was very tense, which resulted in errors and inaccuracies) and his teammate Christoph Koschel with Donnperignon . At the end of the day, they placed fourth and tenth, with the individual judges' placements differing significantly from each other, especially for Rath (third to eighth).

From the Dutch team, Sander Marijektiven and Edward Gal just did not make it into the group of the top 15 of the Grand Prix Spécial, so it was no longer possible to defend Gal in the Grand Prix Freestyle. Victoria Max-Theurer also did not achieve the placement required for the freestyle. This also applied to Christoph Koschel, who was among the top 15, but as the fourth (worst-placed) German rider, he was also not eligible to start. For him, the 16th-placed Valentina Truppa from Italy moved up into the freestyle starter field.

Individual evaluation (Grand Prix Freestyle)

In the Grand Prix Freestyle Adelinde Cornelissen continued its winning streak in the Grand Prix Spécial continued with a technical (A-) rating of well over 80 percent of all judges and artistic (B-) scores between 90 and 95 percent they won with Parzival superior with a final grade of 88.839%.

As in the special, the silver medal went to Carl Hester. With Uthopia , he could no longer quite match the top performance from the Grand Prix de Dressage - two out of seven judges gave him an A grade below 80 percent. In the B-grade, however, it was mostly rated by 90 percent, so that the final grade was 84.179 percent.

Patrik Kittel could show his best performance at these European championships. The Swede had finished fifth with Scandic in the Grand Prix Spécial the day before and won the freestyle at the CDI 5 * Falsterbo a few weeks earlier . At the European Championship Grand Prix Freestyle he again showed a strong performance, which was rewarded with 83.429%. Laura Bechtolsheimer is just about there with 83.018%.

Matthias Alexander Rath and Totilas showed a ride with fewer mistakes than in the Spécial, but the tightly ridden Totilas again suffered mistakes in the one and two exchanges , which the judges only gave with marks of 5.0 .

As in the previous tests, Isabell Werth's horse El Santo again showed clear weaknesses in the piaffes - these were given scores of four to six in the freestyle. For the remaining lessons, however, Werth received high grades, so that she finished the exam with 80.536% in eighth place. Helen Langehanenberg and Damon Hill landed one place behind .

additional

The recording and transmission of results at the 2011 European Championships, as at the 2010 World Equestrian Games , was carried out by the Dutch company Sport Computer Graphics (SCG). In order to guarantee that the computer systems work, a test rider started outside of the classification (as a so-called “Guinea Pig”) before the Grand Prix and before the Grand Prix Spécial. The internationally successful Canadian dressage rider Ashley Holzer took on this task in Rotterdam with her horse Popart .

The main test of the international dressage tournament for riders up to 25 years of age (CDIU25-A), the FEI Grand Prix U25 , which was held here at the same time , was won by German rider Kristina Sprehe with Desperados .
