Johann Gottsberger

Johann Baptist Göttsberger (born December 31, 1868 in Kobl near Schnaitsee , † August 11, 1958 in Neubiberg ) was a German Catholic theologian.

Life

Göttsberger studied from 1889 to 1893 in Freising and Munich. From 1897 on he was a lecturer at the Archbishop's Seminary in Freising and, after completing his doctorate in 1899, a teacher there at the Royal Bavarian Lyceum .

From 1903 to 1935 he was full professor for Old Testament introduction and exegesis and for biblical-oriental languages ​​at the University of Munich . His critical research freed his subject from the charge of outdated conservatism.

In 1902 he founded the Biblical Journal together with Joseph Sickenberger and was editor of Biblical Studies from 1922 .

Honors

There is a Prof.-Göttsberger-Straße both in Schnaitsee and in Neubiberg, where Göttsberger owned a weekend house and read Holy Mass.
