Carl Rupert Hester , MBE (born June 9, 1967 in Barnet , London ) is a British dressage rider . He is a six-time British champion and multiple medalist at international championships.

Career

Carl Hester was born into a childhood relationship with British theater and film producer Anthony Smee . His father kept out of contact, however, and Hester was almost put up for adoption. But Hester grew up with his grandmother on the Channel Island of Sark . On this largely vehicle-free island, where horse-drawn carts are still important today, he first learned to ride a donkey. Later, when he reached the right height, he rode the draft horses of the horse-drawn carts.

Carl Hester left Sark at the age of 10 and went to boarding school until the age of 16. After boarding school, he worked at the Fortune Center of Riding Therapy in Bransgore, Dorset . Here he did his British Horse Society Assistant Instructors exam . During this time, at the age of 18, he became the first British dressage master for young riders . With the same horse he was also part of the British young rider squad in eventing (which is far more popular in the UK) .

After two and a half years in Dorset, he briefly returned to Sark, but then moved to the British main island and worked as a “working pupil” in the stable of Janni and Christopher Taylor in Bourton-on-the-Hill, Gloucestershire . Due to an injury, he could not take part in the 1988 European Dressage Championships for young riders with the horse Slightly Trendy made available to him . In the following year he got the opportunity to work in the stable of the dressage rider Wilfried Bechtolsheimer (father of Laura Bechtolsheimer ).

" " I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I went from earning £ 10 per week as a working pupil to having a wage, car, house, lessons, horses - it blew my mind. At the time, they were pioneering with their stable management and schooling. I just wanted to soak it all up. " (I thought I died and was in heaven. Instead of 10 pounds a week as a “working pupil” I now had wages, a car, house, lessons, horses - it impressed me very much. During this time they were with their stable management and groundbreaking in their training. I just wanted to soak up everything.) "

- Carl Hester on his time in the Bechtolsheimer stable

During his time in the Bechtolsheimer stable he played his first world championship ( World Equestrian Games 1990) with Rubelit and his first Olympic Games with Giorgione in 1992. He was also British champion with Giorgione in 1991 and 1992. After three and a half years, he decided to set up a stable with Kate Carter. Since 2004 Carl Hester has been running a show and training stable near Gloucester .

He reached the peak of his career so far in 2011. Both he and his horse Uthopia and his student Charlotte Dujardin with Valegro advanced to the top of the world in dressage riding. The British team dominated the European Championships in Rotterdam , Hester won both individual silver medals with Uthopia . In January 2012, he rose to second place in the world rankings with Uthopia .

Because of the successes in 2011, Paul Schockemöhle acquired the stallion Metall , the father of Uthopia . In addition, the Swedish dressage rider Minna Telde tried, with the help of her friend, to acquire Uthopia for a sum of millions at the end of 2011. Hester, who previously only owned shares in Uthopia , was able to prevent this sale with support in view of the Olympic Games.

At the 2012 Summer Olympics , Hester and Uthopia won the team gold medal as part of the British teams. In the individual ranking, Carl Hester and Uthopia came in fifth. For the next four years, Hester was part of the British team, each of which won a team medal, from 2014 with Nip Tuck . In 2017 Carl Hester missed a medal at the European Championships, but with fourth place in the freestyle he achieved his best individual result since 2011. At the beginning of the year, Hester was third at his second World Cup final . At the 2018 World Equestrian Games , Hester brought a new horse to the start with ten-year-old Delicato . With over 77 percent in the team competition, he made his part in winning the British bronze medal.
