Riding stadium

The FEI European Championships Aachen 2015 took place from August 11th to August 23rd, 2015 in Aachen . During the tournament, the European champions in show jumping , dressage riding , reining , vaulting and driving were determined. This was the first time that the European championships in five equestrian disciplines were held in one place.

Award

The World Equestrian Federation FEI awarded the European Championships to Aachen in June 2012. For Aachen, the European Championships were the next major equestrian championships after the 2006 World Equestrian Games . In addition to the annual CHIO Aachen held here , Aachen last hosted the European Show Jumping Championships in 1971 and the European Dressage Championships in 1983 .

During the European Championships, the German Nations' Cup for eventing riders was also held in Aachen as part of a CICO  3 * eventing event. The European championships for this discipline will be held later in the year in Blair Castle (Scotland).

Sports facilities

The main stadium in the Aachen Soers formed the focus of the event, here, in addition to the opening and closing ceremonies, the jumping and dressage competitions took place. For this purpose, as at the World Equestrian Games, a dressage arena with a sandy bottom was created in the middle of the grass field. As in 2006, the Deutsche Bank Stadium was also roofed over and used for reining and vaulting competitions.

Sponsors and media

The FEI European Championships Aachen 2015 did not have a title sponsor, instead the general sponsors already known from the CHIO Aachen also appeared here in this function: Mercedes-Benz , DHL , Turkish Airlines and Rolex .

Similar to the World Equestrian Games in Aachen nine years earlier, the public TV channels, especially WDR television , but also Das Erste and ZDF , broadcast extensive coverage of the European championships. In addition to the more than 30 hours of programming on these channels, Eurosport broadcast a good 10 hours of sport from Aachen across Europe .

Furthermore, all European Championship tests were broadcast worldwide on their paid live stream portal FEI TV. In Germany, all tests of the European Championships including the supporting program could be seen live on the IPTV channel ClipMyHorse , unless they were broadcast live on German television at the time.

Time schedule

The opening ceremony was held on the evening of August 11th (Tuesday). In the first week the exams took place from Wednesday to Sunday, after a day's break and “Soers Tuesday”, the second week started with exams from Wednesday to Sunday.

The first test of the European Championships was the Grand Prix de Dressage , which lasted from August 12th and 13th (Wednesday and Thursday) from morning to late afternoon. In this test, all dressage riders participating in the European championships started.

The participating nations were able to send four dressage riders each with one horse to the European Championships. Each team consisted of three or four riders from one nation, of which the three best results went into the team ranking. The team medals were awarded based on this team ranking.

The Grand Prix de Dressage served not only as a team evaluation but also as a qualification test for the individual evaluation. On the following Saturday (August 15), the 30 best participants in the Grand Prix are still entitled to start in the Grand Prix Spécial . In this test, the first three individual medals in dressage are awarded.

The dressage riders who come in first to 15th in the individual ranking of the Grand Prix Spécial can take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday afternoon (August 16). If more than three riders from one or more nations make it into the top 15 of the Grand Prix Spécial, the lowest placed (fourth) rider of the respective nation is not allowed to take part in the Grand Prix Freestyle. For this purpose, another rider would move up after the Grand Prix Spécial has been placed. The individual medals of the Grand Prix Freestyle are awarded solely on the basis of the results of this test.

Team ranking

After the first day of the team test, the German team was in the lead. Isabell Werth as the second rider of the team had mistakes in the single substitutions with Don Johnson FRH , but felt (also in comparison with other rides of the couple this year) by the judges underrated. One of the most outstanding rides of the first day was shown by Fiona Bigwood and Orthilia : Although it was only the sixth Grand Prix for the mare and the rider has seen twice since a fall a year earlier and therefore rides with an eye patch, both came up with a result of 75.800 percent . This result brought her to eighth place in the individual ranking of the Grand Prix after both days.

With the third rider of each team, the three-way battle between Germany, the Netherlands and Great Britain began to get serious: The best result here went to Hans Peter Minderhoud, who achieved 77.586 percent with Johnson . Carl Hester with Nip Tuck and Matthias Alexander Rath with Totilas each achieved over 75 percent. While the judges at Carl Hesters Ritt were largely unanimous in their assessment, Raths Ritt caused discussions. In the case of several lessons, the ratings diverged massively, the most extreme in the strong trot, where the range ranged from 4.0 "poor" to 8.0 "good". In this lesson were clock impurities that (the rider in this lesson the zureitet straight) from the short side of the dressage arena were badly perceived, named as the reason. Nevertheless, Martin Plewa , for example, judged in a TV interview with Sportschau that a difference of over eight percent in the judges' overall ratings was far too great.

The fourth rider then brought the decision: Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro came, as expected, well over 80 percent (83.029%), but showed weaknesses in flying changes (scores from 5.0 to 6.0). Edward Gal and Undercover had probably their strongest joint ride in a Grand Prix so far , with 82.229 percent they came close to Dujardin, the Netherlands almost certainly had the team gold medal. Kristina Bröring-Sprehe and Desperados FRH were the last couple to start. With a result of just under 80 percent, they clearly showed the best ride of the German team, but could no longer prevent the victory of the Dutch and the silver rank for Great Britain.

Individual classification: Grand Prix Spécial

After the clear imprecision of the timing of Totilas in the Grand Prix, it was decided to withdraw this from the competition and to take it to a veterinary clinic, where bone edema was found on the left rear leg. For him, the Norwegian Trude Hestengen and her stallion Tobajo Pik Disney moved up into the starting field of the Grand Prix Spécial.

After she had only delivered the discarded result in the team classification, Isabell Werth attacked again in the Grand Prix Spécial, but fell out and only got 75.924 percent. Jessica von Bredow-Werndl also made mistakes with Unee in the course of a good ride in the canter changes (both in the single and in the double changes), which lowered the score to 74.790 percent.

The first result of over 80 percent came from Kristina Bröring-Sprehe, who achieved 83.067 percent with Desperados FRH . Directly after her, Charlotte Dujardin started, who came close to her record result on Valegro and took a clear lead with 87.577 percent. His best result so far at a championship was achieved by Hans Peter Minderhoud, whose ride with Johnson, however, showed minor imperfections in terms of leaning and dynamism and thus did not get into the 80 percent range. Edward Gal was the last rider to enter the arena, but his horse undercover was far from the form of the Grand Prix: Even the first lesson, the greeting lineup, did not take place, the horse was extremely tense, and Gal commented on after the test his gelding: "He was unrideable". Since blood formed in Undercover's mouth after the step tour, the chief judge Gal rang the bell, as the regulations provide for a disqualification in this case. With this premature end of the last ride, it was clear that Charlotte Dujardin had defended her individual gold medal from 2013.

Individual ranking: Grand Prix Freestyle

In the Grand Prix Freestyle, 13 couples started: The Danish Anna Kasprzak had already been kicked in the chest area by her horse Donnperignon during the vet check before the first test and, due to the pain, she felt unable to do a third test ride. Fiona Bigwood's mare Orthilia showed a slight skin reaction, so, for the good of the horse, she did not start in the freestyle.

The fifth pair of participants in the freestyle, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee , were the first to achieve a result of over 80 percent. A similar result was achieved two rides later by Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén with her Hanoverian Don Auriello . Isabell Werth's gelding Don Johnson FRH went "the test of his life" according to her testimony, which the judges honored with a score of 82.482 percent. Only a few tenths of a percentage point behind were Hans Peter Minderhoud and Johnson .

Also probably the best performance of his career showed Beatriz Ferrer-salad chestnut gelding Delgado : Translucent and with sweeping corridors they reached for the first time internationally over 80 percent, with 82.714 percent they were not to take the third-last starter couple the bronze medal more. The result went even higher for the penultimate couple: Desperados was concentrated, relaxed, permeable and dynamic , his rider Kristina Bröring-Sprehe summed up the ride: “That was the best freestyle I've ever ridden.” With The judges confirmed this with a result of 88.804 percent.

Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro , who did not come close to their best performances, completed the test . As in the Grand Prix de Dressage, they made mistakes in the single substitutions. As a result, the decision about the gold medal was extremely tight: Three judges saw Dujardin in second place, the other four placed her ahead of Bröring-Sprehe. With an overall result of 89.054 percent, she finally managed to defend her title in the freestyle.

Reining

• 41 starter pairs from 10 nations, nine teams

On the Friday of the first week of the tournament (October 14th), the Reiners started their European championship competitions. In reining, too, the participating nations were each allowed to send four riders, each with one horse, to the reining competitions at the World Equestrian Games. In addition to this, the nations were able to send two more riders and their horses to the individual competition.

The first partial test was the team classification, which also counted as a qualification for the individual classification. In this test, the three best results for the respective team counted, and the team medals were awarded on the basis of these results. From this test the best 15 rider-horse pairs qualified directly for the final. In a second qualification test on August 15, 2015, the participants who had not yet qualified for the final started again, the top five of these tests were also eligible to start in the final. The medal winners of the individual ranking were determined based on the results of the final, which was held on Sunday (August 16) in the morning.

Team ranking

The team competition had to do without the teams of the silver and bronze medal winners of the 2014 World Equestrian Games, Belgium and Austria. Both nations waived in favor of starts in the high endowed tests for western equestrian sport at the Americana at the beginning of September, Austria at least sent two individual starters.

After Stephan Rohde was eliminated, the German team had to do without a cancellation result, but they managed to jump to silver. With two points more, Italy won the gold medal.

Individual evaluation

At his first championship in the senior age group, the 22-year-old Giovanni Masi de Vargas secured the individual gold medal with Dance Little Spook after taking first place in the team competition. Grischa Ludwig, who was tied with Masi de Vargas in the individual ranking of the team task, also shone with Shine my Gun in the individual final. Immediately before the last stop, however, there was a misunderstanding between horse and rider, the stallion wanted to stop after the middle marker. This cost Ludwig decisive points, so that he won the silver medal with a grade of 221.0.

Leap

• 112 starter pairs from 28 nations, 22 teams

The show jumping European championship program started on Tuesday of the second week with a training event without evaluation, followed on the following day as the first evaluation test for individual and team evaluation, a time competition .

Eligible to participate were five show jumpers with one horse each, with one pair serving as a reserve and therefore not taking part in the competitions (if no other rider from his nation was canceled before the start of the time competition). Nations that do not send a team could start individual riders. The team evaluation consisted of two partial tests with a total of three laps. The individual evaluation includes the tests of the team evaluation as well as a further test with two rounds.

The winner of the time jumping was awarded zero penalty points after the test. The time difference between the winner and the other riders was multiplied by 0.5 and thus resulted in their number of penalty points.

The second special stage, spread over two days, August 20 and 21, brought the decision on the team medals. This competition was the classic Nations Cup, it was held as a jumping competition with two rounds . The converted result of the time jumping test was included in the evaluation by the teams and individual starters. In the second round of the test, a different course was used. Only the ten best teams in the overall ranking and other riders who were among the top 50 in the individual ranking were eligible to start. If two or more teams are tied for first place after the second round, a jump-off would be necessary for the award of the gold medal.

There is another break in the starting field before the third, final test of the individual classification (a jumping competition with two rounds): Only the 25 best pairs of participants can start here. The previous penalty points are retained. Here too, if several riders are tied for first place in the overall ranking after both rounds, a jump-off for gold may be necessary.

Team ranking

In the time competition, three German riders made no mistakes, which converted into a result of 4,400 points and thus the lead. The gaps between the teams were still close at this point, eight teams had less than 10 points.

In the first round of the Nations Cup, the riders of the Swiss team achieved a significant increase. Thanks to three faultless laps by Romain Duguet, Janika Sprunger and Paul Estermann, they were able to maintain their mediocre result of 14.230 points from the time competition and thus worked their way up from 13th to sixth. Things were far less fortunate for Austria, which only came in 15th and was therefore eliminated from the team championship. France worked its way up one place to the top position. The test began unhappily for the German team: Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum's gray Fibonacci did not make it into the test optimally, jumped clearly (jumped the obstacles, at the expense of the required distance, significantly higher than necessary) and received four penalty points at the moat. Christian Ahlmann also made a mistake as the second team rider. The faultless rides by Ludger Beerbaum and Daniel Deußer then secured the team third place in the overall standings, behind the Netherlands in second place.

The second day of the Nations Cup started very well for the German and Dutch teams, the first and second riders of both teams made no mistakes. A result of four penalty points from Ludger Beerbaum and Chiara as the third German rider gave the Netherlands the opportunity to secure the gold medal early. The ride of Jur Vrieling and Zirocco Blue without obstacle errors seemed to achieve this, but at the finish it became clear that Vrieling had just exceeded the allowed time and thus received a time penalty. The decision about gold was postponed to the last riders of the two teams. The pressure on Daniel Deußer and his gray Cornet d´Amour was that Germany only had a chance of the team title with a faultless ride. However, a falling pole brought four penalty points and thus the European team title for the Netherlands. For them it no longer mattered that Gerco Schröder was the last Dutch starter to cross the finish line with 14 penalty points.

Things went badly for France: After two French rides that day ended with a result of four penalty points, Jerome Hurel's nine penalty points made winning the gold or silver medal impossible. With eight penalty points from Kevin Staut and Reveur de Hurtebise , the French finally fell back and found themselves in fifth place in the final standings. After Michael Whitaker with Cassionato as the last British starter received nine penalty points, Switzerland became the “laughing third”: With a result of only four penalty points, they worked their way up from fifth to bronze in the final ranking on that day and qualified for the Olympics Games in 2016. Great Britain came fourth and thus secured - after the embarrassing 18th place at the World Equestrian Games in 2014 , the qualification for Rio. The last remaining Olympic ticket was won by the Spaniards, who beat Ireland by 0.38 penalty points. The Irish team then protested that a course helper had obstructed Cian O'Connor between two obstacles. The arbitral tribunal rejected the protest.

Individual evaluation

Pénélope Leprevost , whose European Championship start seemed uncertain due to an injury to her mare Flora de Mariposa at the beginning of the summer, took a clear lead in the time jumping. She kept this position after the first round of the Nations Cup. At this point, Ludger Beerbaum secured his second place in the interim standings , who also made two mistakes with Chiara .

After the second day of the Nations Cup, the situation in the individual ranking had changed significantly: Leprevost and Beerbaum each received four penalty points and were now in fifth and seventh place. Thanks to double-zero rounds in the Nations Cup, Sergio Álvarez Moya , Cassio Rivetti and Jeroen Dubbeldam moved up to the top three places in the individual standings. The best Swiss was Romain Duguet in fourth place , also thanks to two faultless rides . The fifth and final double zero in the Nations Cup was achieved by Paul Estermann . But due to his 5.71 penalty points from the time jump, he was still significantly behind in the individual ranking - 12th place. Max Kühner, the only Austrian who had qualified for the second round, recorded eight penalty points and failed with 28th place in the qualification for the singles final.

For Rivetti, his hope for an individual medal came to an early end before the last individual test, his horse Vivant did not go clear during the pretending and was therefore not allowed to start. In addition, Cian O'Connor and Janika Sprunger declared that they would not start in the last stage.

In the first round of the final exam, the three-fold combination, directly following the moat, turned out to be the central cliff of mistakes in the course. Only five horse-rider pairs managed a ride without mistakes, which put them in a promising position for the second round. Sergio Álvarez Moya lost his lead with an obstacle error, leaving Jeroen Dubbeldam in the lead. For Daniel Deußer, the first round went very badly: After he had lost the connection to the top positions with eight more penalty points, he was subsequently disqualified. He had slightly injured his horse Cornet d'Amour with his spur when he had lost a stirrup.

The course of the second round was designed completely different, it brought far fewer obstacle errors with it. Instead, the time allowed became a problem for some starters, especially the 180 degree turn from the third to the penultimate jump was crucial here. While Christian Ahlmann and Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum were able to work their way back to seventh and eighth with faultless rides, Sergio Álvarez Moya had another mistake with Carlo that finally took away his chance for a medal. Due to Moya's mistake, Simon Delestre , who had crossed the finish line without a mistake, secured an individual medal. After missing the Olympic qualification with the Belgian team, Gregory Wathelet secured the European runner-up with Conrad . Jeroen Dubbeldam as the last starter was able to afford two penalty points with Zenith , crossed the finish line with a time penalty and thus secured the individual gold medal. After Hans Günter Winkler, Dubbeldam is the second show jumper ever to win individual gold at the European Championship, World Championship (2014) and Olympic Games (2000).

• 36 team drivers from 14 nations, 12 teams

As at the annual CHIO, at the FEI European Championships 2015, driving was represented by its “supreme discipline”, driving in four in hand. In the competitions, three drivers from each nation were allowed to take part in the driving competitions with their teams, the host country also received three additional starting places. Each team consisted of four horses and one other horse for exchange. Each team consisted of two or three teams, the two best results for each sub-test were included in the team results.

For the drivers, the European championships with driving training started on August 19 and 20, 2015. Here the team of the Netherlands proved their position as the strongest nation in driving four in hand, with 77.69 points they were already well ahead of Hungary (95.80), Belgium and Germany followed in third and fourth place. IJsbrand Chardon and Theo Timmerman with their teams were also clearly in the lead in the individual standings.

The second partial test for individual and team competitions followed on August 21, namely obstacle driving. While little happened in the team standings, Theo Timmerman slipped significantly in the individual standings. He only came in 24th place in the obstacle course and fell to ninth place in the overall standings. Second place behind IJsbrand Chardon was occupied by the Hungarian József Dobrovitz, and third place was taken by another Dutchman, Koos de Ronde.

One day later, the last partial test followed, off-road driving. This last day brought significant changes in the results: At first it seemed that IJsbrand Chardon could defend his lead here too, but only with a narrow margin of 0.7 points. However, since there were irritations in the transmission of the results, the result was checked again. It was found that the results of Michael Brauchle and Georg von Stein had been exchanged when there was an obstacle. As a result, Brauchle slipped 0.21 points ahead of Chardon to first place and won the individual gold medal with his team. While József Dobrovitz fell back to fourth place, Koos de Ronde won the bronze medal. With a very good off-road drive, Christoph Sandmann worked his way up to fifth place in the individual ranking. Thanks to the strong performances of Brauchle and Sandmann in the last partial test, Germany improved in the team standings and came silver behind the Netherlands.

Vaulting

• 41 individual vaulters, 9 pas de deux pairs and 11 teams

On their first day at the European Championships, August 20 (Thursday), the vaulters had three tests on the program, both the teams and the individual vaulters - both women and men - competed in the compulsory test . On August 21st, all vaulters, including couples in the pas de deux, have a freestyle test on the program. On the following day, the individual vaulters each complete a technical task.

The end of the individual (women and men) was their second freestyle test. The medals were then awarded on the basis of the average of all four individual tests. The participants had the shortest tournament program in the pas-de-deux, for whom the second freestyle was already the final exam. Here the average of both freestyle examinations was used as the basis for awarding the medals. On the other hand, the groups had to master three tests during the European Championships. They concluded their program with a second freestyle on August 23, and the average of the three tests also decided the overall ranking.

pas de deux

Nine pairs of starters started in double vaulting (pas de deux) at the FEI European Championships 2015. Jasmin Lindner and Lukas Wacha from Austria, who have been victorious at world and European championships since 2009 , also won the title in Aachen. Early on in her second freestyle, however, the lead from the first freestyle seemed to be in jeopardy: Lindner landed about ten centimeters too far back so that the following lessons could not be performed as planned. With even greater artistic expression and good horse grades, they still secured victory in the second freestyle and thus the overall victory.

Individual ranking men

Germany was at the start with three men in the individual standings and achieved the maximum yield by winning all individual medals. The national coach Ulla Ramge commented: “I was hoping for three medals in the men. We knew it was possible. But that it actually turned out like this is unbelievable. ” The gold medal went to a debutant: Jannis Drewell, a sports soldier for a year, had narrowly missed the nomination for the championships several times in previous years. After three partial tests, he was still in second place in the intermediate ranking, his performance as a Shaolin monk in the second freestyle brought him the clear victory in the last partial test with 8.732 points and also the jump to first place in the overall ranking. The Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, responsible for the Bundeswehr, personally congratulated him at the medal .

Individual ranking women

In the women’s individual standings, Simone Jäiser and Corinna Knauf faced a duel: Knauf was clearly in the lead in the first two stages, but failed in the technical task. In the final, second freestyle, she again got a better result than Simone Jäiser, but on average of the four partial tests Jäiser was still at the top and thus won the gold medal. After a sixth place in the compulsory task, Lisa Wild fought her way to the top group, in the second freestyle she again showed a somersault in her program and was rewarded with a grade of 8.452 points in the last partial test - which ultimately secured her the bronze medal.

Team ranking

Even with the teams, the decision about the medals remained extremely tight until the end: Several falls in the freestyle of the top teams upset the ratings. The lunge leader of the vaulting group competing for Germany, Jessica Lichtenberg, summed up the situation: "The freedoms of the top teams are now so difficult, we are constantly on a knife edge."

The French team, which only came in fifth after a fall in the first freestyle (and thus fourth in the interim ranking), achieved a grade of 8.877 in the second freestyle - no one could come close to this result. With that they are working their way up to bronze in the overall ranking. The group from Austria, who were better than the French in the first two stages, had to accept the fall of a team member in the second freestyle. They only got a score of 7.669 and slipped to fourth place in the final result.

The Neuss team, experienced in championships, competed for Germany again in Aachen. In the first freestyle from only one group, the people from Neuss received a grade of over nine and again showed a program with the highest degree of difficulty in the second freestyle, which the judges rewarded with a score of 9.8 in the artistic partial grade. However, a fall and two hits on the ground lowered their result in this partial test, but they still got a grade of 8.863. Switzerland, whose team went into the second freestyle last, was also within gold reach. But even this had to accept deductions, also due to a fall. With a score of 7.964 she clearly missed gold and came in second behind the German vaulters in the overall ranking.

Framework tests: versatility

Over two days, on August 13 and 14, 2015, the eventing rider's Nations Cup tournament was held in Aachen. This exam usually takes place within the framework of the CHIO Aachen .

Framework exams: jumping

In the second week of the tournament, in addition to the European Championship special tests, several framework tests were also carried out. These were jumping competitions for young riders and young show jumpers, among others.

The supporting program included three internationally advertised tests for young show jumpers up to the age of eight (CSIYH 1 *). On August 22nd from 6:15 pm the final of the “Sparkassen-Youngsters-Cup” was held, a jumping competition with jump-off with an obstacle height of max. 1.50 meters.

AachenMünchener Prize

For the reserve riders of the teams as well as for the European championship participants who had brought another horse to the Soers, one frame jumping test was announced each day from August 19 to 22. The conclusion of these tests was the “ AachenMünchener Prize ”, an international jumping competition with jump-off on the evening of August 22, 2015. The height of the obstacles was up to 1.55 meters and the test was endowed with 100,000 euros.

Final U25 jumping cup

“Germany's U25 Jumping Cup 2015” came to an end in Aachen: the riders had qualified in four assessment tests for the final of the nationally advertised series of tournaments for German show jumpers up to the age of 25. These took place over the season at the Löwen Classics Braunschweiger, "Horse International" Munich-Riem, the German Championships in Balve and the Nations Cup tournament in Mannheim .

After two warm-up exams, the 20 participants started the final exam, the SAP Prize, on the afternoon of August 23, 2015 . Like the special stages, the final was part of the European Youngster Cup .
