He studied mineralogy and pedagogy for teaching in Münster. From 1971 to 1976 Plewa was the national trainer for eventing riders. During this time he took his horse management exam in 1980. From 1985 to 2000 he was the national coach of the German eventing riders. After the 2000 Summer Olympics , he was accused of having missed a team at this event, and as a result, his contract with the DOKR was terminated. Plewa himself commented as follows: "I have now been in the position of head national coach for 16 years. That is a very long time for a coach. It was a very good year with great successes, and of course with disappointments. It also changed It turned out that my ideas about the type and scope of my further training as a trainer are very difficult to realize under the given circumstances.I am at an age in my early 50s where I still have the chance for a professional reorientation.I am also with the German Equestrian Association and the DOKR remained so that we have left open options for cooperation in the future. "

Since March 2001 he has been the director of the Westphalian Riding and Driving School. In November 2006 he was awarded the title of "Riding Master". Plewa has been a member of the supervisory board of the Xenophon eV association since 2016 - society for the preservation and promotion of classic riding culture.
