history

The Westphalian Riding and Driving School in Münster has existed since 1922. It was founded and directed by Count Brockdorf-Arlefeld in the years 1922–1925. The first location was near the current Halle Münsterland . This was destroyed during the Second World War.

Since 1948, the school in the former Reiterkaserne on Steinfurter Strasse has had good training opportunities again. A large riding arena (25 × 65 m), another riding arena (20 × 40 m), a lunging hall and stables with 80 boxes as well as a riding and jumping arena were available. With its location within the cavalry barracks, it was almost completely shielded from the surrounding traffic.

A special feature was the "jump garden". It was laid out around three sides of the jumping area and completely fenced in. This made it possible for beginners to practice the seat over the jump without having to concentrate on starting the jumps.

The boarding school with about 20 beds offered the course participants and up to 15 apprentices close accommodation. The course participants and the apprentices were fed by the kitchen of the adjacent Bundeswehr barracks.

Under the direction of Paul Stecken , the Westphalian Riding and Driving School gained a solid and generally recognized reputation as one of the best training facilities in Germany for professional riders.

The work of the school was from the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry (NRW) , the Chamber of Agriculture of North Rhine-Westphalia , the Westphalia-Lippe Agricultural Association , the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe , the city of Muenster, the Westphalian Studbook , the former provincial-Westfalen and supported and promoted by riding and driving clubs.

The board of directors included baron Heereman von Zuydtwyck as chairman , president of the German farmers' association and the Westphalian-Lippian agricultural association, and August Lütke-Westhues as chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia equestrian association, a representative of the city of Münster and the respective head of the school.

The historic horse stables have been preserved and are now a listed building. The remaining buildings in the area, which was previously surrounded by stables on all sides, were used by the Bundeswehr and are therefore not listed.

Today the entire area is used by the Münster Academy of Art and the Münster University of Applied Sciences .
