O'Connor began riding when he was 16 when he realized he would never make it as far as his grandfather, rugby star Karl Mullen, in rugby.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, he won the individual gold medal in show jumping with his horse Waterford Crystal . On October 8, 2004, however, it was found that Waterford Crystal had tested positive for doping (at that time no distinction was made between doping and illicit medication). Parts of the B sample and the documents were stolen from the Irish FN office at the time. The FEI withdrew his medal and banned him from competitions for three months. The individual gold medal went to the Brazilian show jumper Rodrigo Pessoa .

In December 2009 O'Connor finished second in the World Cup competition with Rancorrado at the London Olympia Horse Show and won the Grand Prix the following day. He represented the Irish team in 40 Nations Cups until 2010 and took part in World Cup competitions, European championships and world championships.

After Denis Lynch's horse Lantinus was disqualified at the CHIO Aachen 2012 due to hypersensitivity on the horse's leg , the Irish Equestrian Federation withdrew Lynch's Olympic nomination. This benefited Cian O'Connor, who was allowed to take over the single starting place at the 2012 Olympic Games . With Blue Loyd he won the bronze medal in the individual ranking after initially weak rounds in the qualifying tests.

From 2015 the stallion Good Luck became his successful horse at Nations Cups, for example, he won the national Nations Cup in Dublin with the Irish team in 2015 and the Nations Cup in St. Gallen a year later . In 2015 O'Connor was 28th in the individual ranking of the European Championships with Good Luck . The European Championships two years later in Gothenburg were even more successful: after winning the team gold medal, he also won the individual bronze medal here. In September 2017, he was in 19th place in the show jumping world rankings.

Private

O'Connor's grandfather was Irish rugby player Karl Mullen and his godfather is Sir Anthony O'Reilly . Cian's sister Pippa O'Connor works as a model.

On July 3, 2002, Cian's girlfriend at the time, show jumper Hazel O'Callaghan , died of a head injury sustained on June 19 while unloading a horse.

In 2004 he was with the show jumper and TV presenter Rachel Wyse , from 2007 he had a relationship with the US show jumper Georgina Bloomberg .

He married on December 31, 2011. From this marriage they had a son in 2013 and a daughter in 2016.
