Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup 2016

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup 2016 is the fourth season of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup for show jumpers. This stands in a tradition of more than a hundred years of Nations Cup tournaments in show jumping.

Procedure and regulations of the tournament series

The rules of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup were retained in principle, but again adjusted in various points compared to the previous year. It remained with seven (theoretical) leagues that are distributed around the world: Europe 1, Europe 2, North and Central America, South America, the Middle East, Asia / Australasia and Africa. However, since there are no corresponding Nations Cup tournaments in Asia / Australasia, Africa and South America, only four leagues are played.

Evaluation points are awarded at each Nations Cup in the series. The points system revised for the 2014 season will be used again:

space 1 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th 8th 9 10 Further
Points 100 90 80 70 60 55 50 45 40 35 no points

The number of Nations Cups at which the teams can collect points varies depending on the league: In the Europa League 1, each national association had to select four Nations Cups at the beginning of the season, where their own team could collect points for participation in the finals. Further starts in other Nations Cups outside of your own league are possible, but no rating points can be collected for these. In the other leagues, a previous determination is not required, in the Europa League 2, a maximum of the collected evaluation points of 50 percent of the Nations Cup in this league counts per team.

After the end of the season, which runs from mid-February to the end of August 2016, a final tournament will be held. The venue for the final is again Barcelona. Eighteen teams qualify for the final: seven from Europe 1, two from Europe 2, two from North and Central America, two from South America, two from the Middle East, two from Asia / Australasia and one team from Africa. If the host country does not qualify for the finals, it may start as the 19th team. The importance of the Nations Cup final for the European leagues declined, however, since the relegation decision is only made based on the final score of the Europa League 1.

Middle East League

In its fourth season, the Middle East League included only one special stage, the United Arab Emirates Nations Cup. The CSIO  5 * tournament President of UAE Show Jumping Cup was held in Al-Ain from February 17th to 20th, 2016.

The Nations Cup was held on Thursday afternoon (February 18). The victory went to France, the best team from the Middle East League came second with Qatar. In addition to Qatar, Saudi Arabia also qualified for the season finale.

North and Central America League

In 2016, the tournament calendar of the North and Central American League (full name: North America, Central America and Caribbean Division ) again included three Nations Cup tournaments, all of which were held in the first half of the year.

1st test: United States

For the second time the US Nations Cup tournament took place in the self-proclaimed Horse Capital of the World , Ocala . The CSIO 4 * tournament opened the 2016 Nations Cup season, it was held from February 16 to 21, 2016 as the fifth week of the Ocala Winter Circuit tournament series held here.

All teams had a fairly high number of starting points, the United States team won the test.

2nd test: Mexico

The Mexican Nations Cup tournament took place in Club Hipico Coapexpan in Xalapa . The CSIO 4 * tournament was held from April 28th to May 1st, 2016.

In the Nations Cup, the Mexican team achieved a historic success. For the first time in 26 years, Mexico won a Nations Cup in show jumping, the last time they did so in 1990 in Bratislava. Under the leadership of their boss d'Equipe, the former US show jumper Norman Dello Joio , the Mexicans got eight penalty points and thus one obstacle clearance to the other (second-placed) teams.

3rd exam: Canada

After only the Nations Cup tournament, not counting for the Nations Cup series , was held in Calgary in Canada in 2015, two Nations Cups were held in Canada in 2016: In addition to Calgary, Langley in British Columbia was also selected as the tournament location. The CSIO 4 * tournament was held from June 1st to 5th, 2016 in the Thunderbird Show Park, where world cup tournaments have been held for years .

The Nations Cup, which counts for the North and Central American League, took place on the afternoon of June 3rd. After the first round of the test, the team in Mexico was clear and clear in the lead. In the second lap Canada caught up significantly, but could not get close to the Mexicans despite their faultlessness, so that the final riders from Canada and Mexico did not start at all. After a long break, Mexico achieved its second Nations Cup victory within a few weeks.

European League 1

As in the previous year, ten teams are taking part in the Europa League 1 ( Europe Division 1 ). The teams qualified for this league based on the following rules:

  1. European teams finishing one to three in the 2015 Nations Cup Final (Belgium, Great Britain and the Netherlands)
  2. the leading team of the final overall ranking of the Europa League 2 of the previous year (Czech Republic)
  3. the second-placed team in the final overall ranking of the Europa League 2 of the previous year, if they would have been among the best eight teams in the 2015 Nations Cup final (which was not the case)
  4. other teams from last year's Europa League 1 based on the overall ranking of the previous year (Switzerland, France, Ireland, Sweden, Germany and Italy)

Only Spain was relegated from European League 1 to European League 2 in 2016. The relegation rules for the 2016 season, however, are stricter: The Europa League 1 should only include eight teams, which was the case up to 2013. The teams that are in eighth to tenth place in the overall ranking of the Europa League 1 at the end of the 2016 season will be relegated.

1st test: Belgium

Also in 2016 the Belgian Nations Cup tournament in Lummen was supposed to mark the beginning of the top European league. The tournament, which was to be held from April 27th to May 1st, 2016, was affected by heavy rain on the days before the tournament. Since the conditions for a 5 * tournament were not appropriate, the tournament was largely canceled, only the framework tests and the Flanders Jumping Derby were played.

The associations of Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the Czech Republic had selected Lummen as an exam in which they want to collect points. Since these teams would miss their fourth valuation result due to the cancellation, an average result is scored instead: For this, the valuation points of the three other valuation tournaments for each team are added up and divided by three. This result is also included in the overall ranking.

2nd test: France

Part of the team of the third placed French: Roger-Yves Bost and Sydney Une Prince

On the weekend of Pentecost, from May 12th to 15th, 2016, the French Nations Cup tournament was held in La Baule-Escoublac . The Nations Cup took place on May 13th from 2 p.m.

After the first round of the Nations Cup, four teams remained without penalty points. Of these, the team from the Netherlands mastered the second round (with only one time penalty) best and thus won the test. The German team, which was only sixth after the first lap, was the only one not to receive any penalty points in the second lap, which allowed them to work their way up to fourth place.

The following teams received points in La Baule: Belgium, Germany, France, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

3rd test: Italy

From May 26th to 29th, 2016, the traditional CSIO Rome took place in the Italian capital for the 84th time on the Piazza di Siena in the park of the Villa Borghese . The Nations Cup was held on the afternoon of May 27th.

In the first round of the test, only the team from Great Britain remained without penalty points. Their result of four penalty points was also the best team result in the second round, so that the victory was clear with eight penalty points. As in La Baule, the German team (which was also aiming for points) started a race to catch up in the second lap, but again did not get beyond a placement in the midfield.

In addition to Germany, France, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Italy also selected Rome to collect points here.

4th exam: Switzerland

The Swiss stage of the Europa League 1 of the Nations Cup took place in St. Gallen . The CSIO Switzerland , Switzerland 's Nations Cup tournament, was held from June 2nd to 5th, 2016 in the Grundmoos stadium.

After the first round, Germany was in first place, but the team threw eight more penalty points back in the second round to second place. They shared this with three other teams. The victory, however, went to Ireland, whose riders coped well with the changed conditions in the second lap (the onset of heavy rain) and received no penalty points.

From both Sweden and Switzerland, only the results of three riders were included in the evaluation, as both Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Martin Fuchs were disqualified due to traces of blood on their horses.

The following teams received evaluation points in St. Gallen: Belgium, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

5th test: Netherlands

The CHIO Rotterdam, the Netherlands' Nations Cup tournament, was held from June 22nd to 26th, 2016. The following teams can receive points in the Rotterdam Nations Cup: France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland.

Already in the first round the team from the Netherlands took the lead without any obstacle errors, with the exception of the second-placed teams from Germany and Switzerland (each with four penalty points), the other teams were already far behind. In the second lap, Maikel van der Vleuten, as the last rider in the Netherlands, did not have to start at all. The hosts won with a penalty-free final result. Switzerland was also able to finish the second round without counting penalty points and thus came in second. The German team, which consisted of four riders with experience of championships and mostly horses with no experience in national prizes, came third. The other teams followed with 13 to 33 penalty points on the other places, with the last two places in the Rotterdam Nations Cup, which counts for them for the overall standings, to France and Great Britain.

The Swedish stage of the Europa League 1 was held from July 7th to 10th, 2016 as part of the Falsterbo Horse Show in Skanör med Falsterbo . The following teams had the opportunity to collect points in Falsterbo: Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

Three teams managed to finish the first round of the Nations Cup without penalty points. Germany and the Netherlands completed the first round with four penalty points more. While the German team had the second worst team result in the second round (the Czech Republic was again clearly lagging behind in last place), Switzerland achieved the ideal result: In both rounds without penalty points, the Confederates won the test and also collected 100 points for the overall standings.

7th test: Ireland

Due to the fact that the equestrian competitions at the Summer Olympics were held in the first half of August, the Dublin Horse Show in 2016 was not held in August, as traditionally, but from July 20 to 24. This means that the Irish stage was not the final test of the Europa League 1 this year either. The teams from France, Ireland, Italy, Sweden and the Czech Republic received evaluation points in Dublin.

After the first round of the Nations Cup, which was held on the afternoon of July 22, 2016, three teams were in the lead: Ireland, Italy and the United States of America. While the former two went into the second round with four riders each and again made no mistakes, the team in the United States was weakened: Jessica Springsteen was unable to get her horse Cynar to cross the moat twice in the first round. Therefore she did not start in the second lap, the course of which was identical to the first lap. Due to the mistakes of Lauren Hough and Georgina Bloomberg, the team slipped to third place in the second round.

However, a jump-off was required between Ireland and Italy. The team bosses of both nations each chose their first rider as a jump-off rider. Ireland had to present in the jump-off, which Denis Lynch sent into the jump-off course. After receiving a time penalty in the second lap, Lynch showed a fast ride with good turns with All Star . Before the last obstacle, however , All Star pushed to the left and ran past the obstacle. Denis Lynch had to start again and got two time penalty points in addition to the four penalty points. Piergiorgio Bucci was able to use this starting position as the second rider in the jump-off and secured victory for Italy with a flawless lap.

8. Examination: United Kingdom

The Royal International Horse Show formed the framework for the eighth station of the Europa League 1. The United Kingdom's Nations Cup tournament was held in Hickstead from July 28th to 31st, 2016, just one week before the start of the Olympic equestrian competitions. At this last stage of the season, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Switzerland had the opportunity to collect points.

The date also had an impact on the starting field for the Nations Cup held on the afternoon of July 29th, the nations mostly brought riders to the start who were not supposed to start at the Olympic Games. After the first round, two teams were in the lead, the Netherlands and Germany. While the Dutch got twelve penalty points three times in the second round and fell back to last place, things went much better for the German team. After Germany had only landed in the middle of the field in the two previous Nations Cups, where it was able to collect points, it brought four A-riders to the start in Hickstead, three of them with their best horses. Ludger Beerbaum, who had only decided on Casello instead of Chiara shortly before the Olympic nomination , had been selected as the final rider for the German team, as was so often the case, and due to the performance of his teammates with Chiara, he didn't even have to start in both laps go - after the third German rider in the second round, the victory was certain.

The Irish, who were only allowed to start with a single rider at the Olympic Games, got four penalty points in the first round, with the same result in the second round they secured second place together with Belgium. Despite the start of four of their best non-Olympic pairs, the hosts lacked the necessary luck, all British riders received four or eight penalty points in the second round, which threw them back to sixth place. It was even worse for Italy that, like Ireland, only had one Olympic starting place in show jumping and so brought some of their strongest horse-rider pairs to the start in Hickstead, due to 24 penalty points in the second round they share last place with the Netherlands and got only a few points for the overall ranking.

Overall ranking Europa League 1

Most of the rating points were collected by the Dutch in the 2016 season. Due to the missing result of the first special stage and the therefore alternatively determined average result for five teams, the last special stage of this season was even more exciting and important than in previous years. Belgium came in second in Hickstead, poor placements in La Baule and St. Gallen depressed their average result, so that the team is among the relegated of the season. Although the British were able to record a victory, three back places in the other counting special tests brought them to eighth place in the overall standings, so that they too have to leave the Europa League 1. The Czech Republic entered the season as an outsider, four last places confirmed this, so that the Czechs are relegated straight back to the Europa League 2. The remaining seven teams remain in the Europa League 1 and are also qualified for the Nations Cup finals in Barcelona.

European League 2

In the Europa League 2, all European teams that did not belong to the Europa League 1 can collect points. In 2016 the Europa-Liga 2 has seven special stages. A Slovak and a San-Marinese Nations Cup were no longer part of the tournament series, but the Slovenian Nations Cup tournament with Celje was added.

In contrast to the previous year, the teams did not have to determine in advance where they wanted to collect points. However, only the best four results from each nation are included in the overall ranking.

1st test: Austria

The Linz Horse Festival, the Austrian Nations Cup tournament, was held from May 5th to 8th, 2016 in Linz- Ebelsberg . The Nations Cup of this CSIO 4 * tournament was held on May 6th at 4 p.m., there were 13 teams at the start.

After the first lap Poland and Norway were in the first two places, both teams only with time penalties. Both teams showed a significantly weaker result in the second round, but it was enough for victory or third place. The Ukraine achieved the first of a series of top placings with second place in Linz. Austria and Luxembourg came in the middle of the final ranking.

2nd test: Slovenia

For the first time the CSIO Celje, Slovenia's Nations Cup tournament since 2014, was a stage of the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup. The second tournament of the Europa League 2 took place from May 12th to 15th, 2016 at the Equestrian Center Celje.

After the first round of the Nations Cup on the afternoon of May 13th, Ukraine and Austria were flawlessly in the lead, with Spain in third place with a time penalty. The other nine teams followed at a considerable distance. The dominance of these three teams also continued in the second round, although Austria received twelve penalty points and fell back to third place. The victory went to the team starting for Ukraine.

3rd test: Denmark

Just like the CSIO Celje, the CSIO in Odense on the island of Funen was held for the third time in 2016. The Danish Nations Cup tournament, a CSIO 3 *, took place from May 18-22, 2016.

In the first round of the Nations Cup, which was held on May 20th from 4:30 p.m., Ukraine and Belgium each got four penalty points, which earned them the joint lead. In the second round, almost all participating teams collected double-digit penalty points. With just eight penalty points, Ukraine achieved the best result in the second round, so that the team won the test by a clear margin.

6th test: Hungary

At the same time as the German Nations Cup tournament in Aachen , the CSIO Budapest was held from July 14th to 17th, 2016. The CSIO 3 * tournament formed the framework for the Hungarian Nations Cup.

In this Nations Cup, Luxembourg was eliminated after the first round, Austria came in fifth with 20 penalty points from both rounds. For the first time in this Nations Cup season, the winner was not yet certain after two rounds, a play-off between Italy and Hungary had to bring the decision. Both riders earned four penalty points, but Gábor Szabó needed three seconds less than his Italian competitor for the jump-off course and thus secured victory for the hosts.

The end of the Europa League 2 was the CSIO Gijón in 2016. The Nations Cup tournament in Gijón was the second CSIO 5 * tournament in the context of the Europa League 2, it took place from 24 to 29 August 2016.

In the Nations Cup, which was held on the afternoon of August 27th, only a few riders managed a faultless ride. In the first round only the team from Great Britain managed to finish with less than 12 penalty points. Although there were fewer mistakes in the second round, while Great Britain received 12 penalty points, the lead from the first round was so large that it was enough for the British to win. The hosts came in second, Spain had remained flawless after deducting the cancellation result in the second round.

final

General

For the fourth time, the Nations Cup final, the conclusion of the Nations Cup series, was a guest in Barcelona . The Nations Cup final was organized as part of the CSIO Barcelona . The tournament was advertised as CSIO 5 * and was held from September 22nd to 25th on the grounds of the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona .

The first test of the finals was a jumping competition after mistakes (one round). From this test, the eight best teams qualified for the final test. The final test was advertised as a jumping competition based on mistakes and time . The mistakes from the first exam were not included in the final exam. If there was a tie in first place (which occurred) the final test was decided in a jump-off, in which three riders per team started.

A consolation test was planned for the teams that did not qualify for the final exam at the final. Like the final test, this test was advertised as a jumping competition with a one-time jump-off, but in normal circulation time only played a role in relation to time penalties.

Based on the Nations Cup regulations, 18 teams qualified for the final.

From the leagues these were the following teams:

The following teams were named for the final tournament from the regions without Nations Cup leagues:

New Zealand refrained from participating in Barcelona, as did Japan as a replacement for New Zealand. Also from the Middle East League only Qatar agreed to start in Barcelona, both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates waived as successors. The two starting places that became free were given to Belgium and Great Britain.

After Oleksandr Onyshchenko went into hiding and the sale of a number of horses from the riders starting for Ukraine, Ukraine withdrew its willingness to start the Nations Cup final. Austria was named as a successor from the Europa League 2.

bLike the Netherlands and Ireland, Brazil had eight penalty points. In the event of a tie in eighth place, the regulations stipulate that the time of the best rider in each team is used as a differentiation criterion. In all three teams this was a faultless rider, but Brazil came here on the slowest time and is therefore led in ninth place.

Consolation test

The Challenge Cup, the consolation test for the teams that did not qualify for the final test, should initially be held on the evening of September 23, 2016. However, due to heavy rain, the test was canceled. This would have promoted Spain to the Europa League 1 of 2017 based on the result of the qualification test. Because of the protests of several team bosses, it was decided to cancel the first test on Sunday and to replace it with the Challenge Cup.

The course presented the teams with a great challenge: All teams got double-digit penalty points, up to the penultimate rider, no rider managed to remain without penalty points. Only two riders came to the finish line with a time penalty. In front of the last rider, Qatar and Brazil were in the lead with 12 penalty points each. Bassem Hassan Mohammed got four penalty points with Dejavu for Qatar. Pedro Veniss was the last rider to have the decision in his hand. His team-mate Stephan de Freitas Barcha had fallen, so that no cancellation result was possible for Brazil. Veniss withstood the pressure and with Quabri de L'Isle was the only rider to make no mistakes , so Brazil won the test. Of the teams in the Europa League 2, Spain came fourth and Austria eighth, so Spain secured promotion on this path.

Final exam (Nations Cup Final 2016)

On the evening of September 24, 2016, the final examination of the Nations Cup Finals was held. The regulations for the test, which is very highly endowed with 1.5 million euros, had been changed slightly compared to previous years: in a possibly necessary jump-off (which had not taken place since the re-introduction of the Nations Cup final), three riders per team no longer had to compete Go start, just a rider previously named by the team boss.

Unlike in the previous year, there were a few rides without obstacle errors, instead the time of 76 seconds was chosen so tight that there were time errors. Two teams dominated the test: Great Britain and Germany. Compared to the qualification test, both teams had exchanged one rider each, due to a slight fever from Daniel Deusser's Wallach, Janne Friederike Meyer moved up.

The German team had to accept an obstacle error from Marcus Ehning, Great Britain received 12 starting points from their successor Jessica Mendoza. All other riders of the two nations remained faultless with their horses, including Ludger Beerbaum at his 134th and last Nations Cup for Germany. Thus, the penalty point-loaded results could be deleted, both teams came to an error-free overall result. The United States team was able to work its way forward with two faultless rides towards the end, but no longer endangered the leading group and thus came in third.

Thus, for the first time in this decade, there was a jump-off for victory in the Nations Cup final. First of all, Great Britain had to submit: As with their individual Olympic victory a few weeks earlier, Nick Skelton and Big Star had to put the competition under pressure with a swift, faultless ride. Skelton crossed the finish line in 41.57 seconds with no penalty points. Germany sent Marcus Ehning into the jump-off with Pret A Tout . As in their last joint test four weeks earlier in the Münster Grand Prix, Ehning and Pret A Tout could not be beaten in Barcelona either, both of whom crossed the finish line in under 40 seconds without any mistakes. For Marcus Ehning this was the second victory within a day (he had won the Queen's Cup with Funky Fred in the afternoon ), for Germany it was the first victory in the Nations Cup series after 2012 .
