Holger Wulschner is considered the most famous show jumper in the new federal states. He lives in Passin near Güstrow, is married and has two sons from a previous marriage.

Until 1990

At the age of seven he started riding near his home town of Neurüdnitz . At the age of 15 he won the GDR youth championship for show jumping. At a young age he decided to make horses and riding his profession. He implemented this after graduating from school and trained as a skilled worker for horse breeding at LPG zckericker Loose . In the following years he worked at the interim facility ( ZBE ) pig production in Schlaitz as a rider and stud keeper. As part of this activity he also rode the horse Missouri . With this he entered, often self-financed, in tournaments in other states of the Warsaw Pact .

After German unification

After German reunification, he entered the World Cup in November 1990 in Berlin's Deutschlandhalle . Here he was the only rider from the new federal states to pass the qualification test and thus won prize money of 1,000 marks. Thereupon there was an international interest in the horse Missouri made available to him , there were purchase bids of one million marks. Since his employer, the ZBE Schweinproduktion Schlaitz, got into economic difficulties due to falling pig prices, the workforce there pushed for the horse to be sold. At this time, Wulschner made the acquaintance of the Berlin property manager Herbert Herzog. At that time he was planning to renovate a riding facility in Passin and was looking for an instructor. Wulschner accepted the offer and Herbert Herzog subsequently bought Missouri .

As a result, Holger Wulschner tried to get equestrian experience from West German show jumpers. Franke Sloothaak turned him down, but he got help from Ulrich Kirchhoff , with whom Wulschner maintains a friendly relationship to this day. Kirchhoff made Holger Wulschner familiar with dressage training. In a three-month internship at Paul Schockemöhle , he learned how a riding stable is managed. As a result, Wulschner became a partner in the riding facility in Passin.

In September 1992, inspectors at the CHI Donaueschingen found an anabolic steroid, nandrolone, in Missouri's blood . Wulschner stated that he did not know the remedy at all at the time. The FEI then banned him for three months. Since the substance counts as doping, he was consequently unable to take part in the next Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 , for which Herbert Meyer had designated him as a substitute rider. As a result of these events, Wulschner reacted defiantly and wanted to show everyone. In doing so, however, he put himself under so much pressure that he rode badly, he said he was “on the point of quitting the sport”. His then wife Iris and the Herzog family stopped him. In the following time he achieved his final international breakthrough as part of the German team with second places in the Nations Cup in Washington in 1994 and in Modena in 1995. His greatest successes so far include victories at the Grand Prix of Hickstead , Linz, Hamburg and Rotterdam as well as the victory in the German Jumping Derby 2000. In Hamburg he achieved the unique feat with Capriol of winning both qualifications and the final. In 1997 he took part in the World Cup finals.

independence

On July 1, 2003, he went into business for himself and since then has been running a plant with his team in Groß Viegel near Rostock .

The year 2008 turned out to be one of the most successful of his career, he won the Grand Prix of Nörten-Hardenberg and Hickstead and was 8th in the Grand Prix of Aachen . A year earlier he had won the European Prize in Aachen. The year 2009, on the other hand, was mainly characterized by injuries to his competition horses. In November 2014 he became “Rider of the year” for the first time, overall winner of the 2014 Riders Tour .

In December 2005 and 2006 he held a national tournament on his facility in Groß Viegel (municipality of Dummerstorf ). Since the summer of 2013, he has been hosting an international show jumping tournament on his facility, and the Mecklenburg Youth Derby has been held here since 2013. Holger Wulschner contested his 50th Nations Cup in July 2016 in Falsterbo .

In the 2016/2017 indoor season, Wulschner and Skipper achieved several good placements in World Cup competitions, such as a third place in Mechelen . With the 13th place in the overall ranking of the Western European League, he qualified for the second time for the World Cup final. However, an abscess on Skipper's hoof prevented participation in the World Cup finals.

In 2018, Wulschner is a member of the perspective squad (formerly B-squad) of German show jumpers. His son Benjamin also works as a show jumper.

Current and former competition horses

His most successful horse in the 2000s was the gelding Clausen. In mid-2008, Clausen's owner at the time, Siegfried Kludt, attracted media attention at the CHIO Aachen. After there had already been various offers to buy for Clausen, Kludt decided to sell half of the horse to Holger Wulschner for a symbolic price, as this horse was "the horse of his life" for Wulschner. In order to make a sale impossible, Kludt gave the remaining shares in the horse to his underage daughter.

Wulschner's former top horse Missouri was sold to Paul Schockemöhle in autumn 1995. The horse subsequently took part in the 1996 Olympic Games with the Saudi Arabian rider Kamal Bahamdan, who was then trained by Schockemöhle . The mare Fine Lady ridden by him in 2013 and 2014 won the individual bronze medal with Eric Lamaze at the 2016 Olympic Games .
