Western European League 2016/2017 (Show jumping)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western European League of the FEI World Cup Jumping 2016/2017 (Longines FEI World Cup ™ Jumping from 2016 to 2017, Western European League) was the 39th season of the Western and Central European League of the FEI World Cup Jumping . The World Cup is the most important tournament series in the indoor season in the Western European League.

Course of the tournament series

Compared to the previous season, the Western European League grew by two valuation tests to now 13 World Cup competitions: Gothenburg , the venue for the last World Cup final, once again held a normal World Cup competition as part of the Western European League. In addition, the CSI 5 * in the Galician A Coruña (Spain) rose to the World Cup tournament. The 2016/2017 season thus comprised the period from mid-October 2016 to the end of February 2017.

The Swiss watch manufacturer Longines was the name sponsor of the tournament series for another season . All tournaments in the league were advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping. They were marked with the suffix -W (i.e. CSI 5 * -W) to identify them as World Cup tournaments. The best 18 riders of the Western European League as well as additional participants (“extra competitors”) qualified for the 2017 World Cup finals .

The World Cup competitions were held on Sunday afternoons. Only two tournaments traditionally deviated from this: In Bordeaux, the World Cup special test took place on Saturday evening, in Mechelen it is held every year on the afternoon of December 30th, regardless of the weekday.

The World Cup competitions were advertised as jumping competitions with a single jump- off, the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters. The prize money for each of these tests was at least 100,000 .

media

The FEI broadcast all tests of the Western European League for a fee via its Internet portal FEI TV. In the host country, the World Cup competitions were mostly broadcast live on television, and the other competitions in the Western European League were also shown live or recorded in individual European countries. The pan-European sports broadcaster Eurosport 1 broadcast the exams in a 60-minute summary, which was usually shown on the night from Monday to Tuesday (beginning around midnight).

The exams

1st test: Oslo

The start of the Western European Show Jumping League took place from October 13 to 16, 2016 as part of the Oslo Horse Show. This was held in the Telenor Arena in Oslo .

In the first World Cup competition of the season there was an unusual situation in which 20 riders failed to make mistakes and more than half of all starters made this test in the jump-off. So the challenge for the riders was even more than in other jump-offs, not only to stay error-free, but also to master the jump-off course in a really fast time. Eight riders succeeded in the jump-off, with their horses again without mistakes. Alberto Zorzi, the rider of Jan Tops , was the first to do this with the mare Fair Light van't Heike . Zorzi's time of 36.93 seconds turned out to be impossible to catch up with the other riders, and with it he won a World Cup for the first time in his career.

2nd test: Helsinki

The second tournament in the Western European League is the Helsinki International Horse Show . The horse show held in Helsingin Jäähalli took place from October 20th to 23rd, 2016. the World Cup test of the Western European League was held as the final test of the tournament on October 23 from 3:40 p.m.

In the Helsinki World Cup, 15 riders and their horses made no mistakes and thus formed the starting field for the jump-off. Mathieu Billot was the first to achieve a clear round in the jump-off with the 10-year-old stallion Shiva d'Amaury . His time of 32.70 seconds turned out to be a real challenge for the other participants, only Romain Duguet managed to be almost two seconds faster with Quorida de Treho . As the last couple to start, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum and Comanche started in the jump-off. While they were among the slowest pairs in the jump-off in Oslo, Michaels-Beerbaum attacked in Helsinki and finished only seven hundredths of a second slower than Billot without making a mistake. This was the third fastest of six zero-error rides in the jump-off. Romain Duguet defended his previous success in the same place with his victory.

3rd test: Lyon

After two Scandinavian stages, the third stage took the Western European League to France: From October 26th to October 30th, 2016, the World Cup Equitá Lyon took place in Lyon . The venue was the Eurexpo exhibition center . The world cup competition was held on October 30th from 3:30 p.m.

Eight riders entered the jump-off with their horses. The winning pair from Helsinki, Romain Duguet and Quorida de Treho , replaced Denis Lynch with All Star in the jump-off . In the jump-off, the riders had to make a curve almost in the form of a 180 degree turn from the second to the third obstacle. While all riders up to and including Romain Duguet rode around obstacle 4c for this purpose, Daniel Deußer and Equita van't Zorgvliet managed to get around obstacle 4c. So he achieved a time of less than 43 seconds, made no mistakes and took the top position. Kevin Staut followed Deußer and was even faster with Reveur de Hurtebise , but an obstacle error threw him back to sixth place. After Staut, only Daniel Deusser's stable colleague Lorenzo de Luca started, but with his 12-year-old gelding, he couldn't keep up with the times of Deusser and Duguet and thus achieved third place.

4th test: Verona

The fourth evaluation test of the Western European League was held two weeks after Lyon: Jumping Verona, the Italian world show jumping tournament, took place as part of the Fieracavalli. The tournament was held from November 10th to 13th, 2016, with the World Cup jumping at the end of the tournament on the afternoon of November 13th.

In Verona, 13 riders made it into the jump-off. Four of the jumpers finished the World Cup with their horses without any mistakes. The clearly fastest and flawless lap of the jump-off brought the Egyptian Abdel Said, who lives in Belgium, the victory, here he rode the 9-year-old mare Hope van Scherpen Donder . Last year's winner, Simon Delestre, came in second with Chesall .

5th exam: Stuttgart

The fifth evaluation test of the Western European Show Jumping League was held as part of the Stuttgart German Masters . The tournament, which also featured dressage and four-in-hand World Cup competitions, was held from November 16 to 20, 2016. The evaluation test of the Western European League was the Grand Prix of Stuttgart in Stuttgart, which was held on the last day of the tournament from 3:25 pm.

In the normal round there were an unusually large number of error-free rides: after a good half of the starting field, there had already been ten zero-error rides, in the end 19 riders and their horses entered the jump-off. Due to the very large field of jump starters and the consequent fact that not all jumpers would make it into the prize money, the first riders rode to attack here. The fourth participant in the jump-off, Cian O'Connor, with his ten-year-old stallion Good Luck was the first to achieve a clear round . Martin Fuchs started with Clooney directly after O'Connor and crossed the finish line without a mistake and only seven hundredths of a second slower than the leader. The following starters did not manage to take the lead at first, Hans-Dieter Dreher, for example, was faster but made an obstacle error.

Even with Steve Guerdat, until halfway through his jump-off with the ten-year-old mare Bianca, it did not look as if he would reach the time of Cian O'Connor. But then he increased the pace again and crossed the finish line faster and without mistakes. Last year's winner Christian Ahlmann, who rode the stallion Taloubet Z this year , was on time right from the start and crossed the finish line two seconds faster than Guerdat without any mistakes. None of the other jump-off participants came close to this performance, so that Ahlmann was able to defend his previous year's victory.

6th test: Madrid

The Madrid Horse Week, the World Cup tournament in Madrid, was part of the Western European League for the third time in 2016. The Feria de Madrid was the venue for this event, which took place from November 24th to 27th, 2016.

In the World Cup, the Grand Prix held on November 27, 2016, nine out of 40 riders stayed clear in the normal round. In the jump-off of these nine participants, Ludger Beerbaum and his gelding Casello managed the first jump-off without any mistakes. Kevin Staut then took the lead with the 11-year-old gelding Aran , but had to hand it over to Marcus Ehning. In the saddle of the stallion Comme il faut, Ehning was the only rider to turn away closely (in front of another obstacle) directly after the penultimate jump of the jump-off course and thus found the best way to the final obstacle, which earned him a good four tenths of a second faster. Scott Brash (who scored his first World Cup points this season after five unsuccessful World Cup competitions) and Denis Lynch also managed zero-error rides after Ehning, and due to the slower times they then placed third and fifth.

7th test: A Coruña

The new venue for a special stage of the Western European League was the Galician city of A Coruña , which is located about 150 km from Vigo, where a world cup tournament took place until 2011. The winter tournament in A Coruña has been held at 5 * level for years, and has been taking place at the same time as the former CHI Geneva World Cup since 2014 . The venue for the tournament was the Centro Hípico Casas Novas, which is owned by Amancio Ortega . In contrast to the other stages, the tests were not carried out in a trade fair or event hall, but instead took place in a large (80 × 40 meters) riding arena with a lot of wood.

The tournament was held from November 9th to 11th, 2016, the world cup competition was held in the late afternoon of December 11th. With prize money of 330,000 euros, the jumping was one of the most highly endowed of the World Cup season. In the first round, seven riders and their horses remained faultless in the allowed time and thus secured their place in the jump-off. A hundredth of a second too slow and thus with a time penalty point, Denis Lynch came in eighth with All Star .

In the jump-off, Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo was the first rider to start, here he rode the 11-year-old gelding Admara , who was taken over by Emanuele Gaudiano at the beginning of 2016 . Lopez Lizarazo managed the jump-off course almost perfectly and crossed the finish line without any mistakes in 37.84 seconds. This time proved to be impossible for the following starters. The last two riders came close to this time, Maikel van der Vleuten Arera C needed 38.18 seconds, but had an obstacle error (fifth place); Jane Richard Philips remained without penalty points, so that she brought the time of 38.21 seconds to second place.

8th test: London

Since Christmas Day in 2016 fell on a Sunday, the British World Cup was held unusually early: The Olympia London International Horse Show , which always ends on the Monday before Christmas, took place from December 13th to 19th, 2016 in the Olympia Grand Hall in London .

The World Cup competition, which was held on the afternoon of the penultimate day of the tournament, was a double success for the hosts: In the jump-off with 13 riders, five participants were again without mistakes, three of them from Great Britain. The victory went to Scott Brash, who rode the ten-year-old mare M'lady ; Second was Ben Maher with the chestnut mare Diva II . Third place went to the Belgian Nicola Philippaerts, supported by the test sponsor H&M .

9th test: Mechelen

As in previous years, the last stage of the 2016 calendar year took place in Mechelen , Belgium . The traditionally last major tournament of the equestrian year, Jumping Mechelen - Vlaanderens Kerstjumping, was held from December 26th to 30th, 2016.

A fault-free lap was achieved in the first round of the 12 riders World Cup competition held on the afternoon of December 30th. The winner of the Mechelen Grand Prix held the day before, Holger Wulschner, was the first to compete in the jump-off. Wulschner, who rode the 12-year-old black gelding Skipper in the World Cup , also made no mistakes in the jump-off and took the lead with a fast time of 40.08 seconds. The 21-year-old Jos Verlooy, who competed with the gray stallion Caracas , took the lead from him . As a result, some riders remained without errors, but none managed a time of less than 41 seconds. Only the last starter, Roger-Yves Bost, was with Sydney Une Prince without mistakes and almost a second faster than Verlooy.

10th exam: Leipzig

The Western European League kicked off 2017 with the second German Show Jumping World Cup: The Partner Horse was held from January 19 to 22, 2017 at the Leipzig Exhibition Center.

The world cup jumping of this tournament was the grand prize held on the last day of the tournament. The time allowed hardly played a role in the first lap, 16 riders made it into the jump-off with a faultless lap. The 21-year-old Guido Klatte was the first rider to start the jump-off, with his chestnut gelding Qinghai he made the following riders a demanding requirement with a swift, flawless lap. Last year's winners, Niklas Krieg and Carella , came as second starters in the jump-off course, they managed a zero-error lap that was one second faster.

The next eight riders did not manage to get close to war, despite many attacking rounds (such as the ride of Roger-Yves Bost , who chose a shortcut through the plant decoration with Sydney Une Prince ). Kevin Staut was the first to manage to cross the finish line with Reveur de Hurtebise without mistakes in under 42 seconds and thus to take the lead. Ludger Beerbaum and his chestnut gelding Casello placed exactly behind Niklas Krieg in the ranking and thus secured the necessary World Cup points, which made his qualification for the World Cup final largely certain. The third to last ride in jump-off was supposed to be a victory ride: Gregory Wathelet's ride with the gray mare Coree didn't seem spectacular, but he crossed the finish line in just 41.77 seconds without penalty points and pushed Kevin Staut into second place.

11. Exam: Zurich

One week after the World Cup competition in Leipzig, the next World Cup competition in the Western European League was held. The test was carried out as part of the CSI Zurich , the tournament took place from January 27 to 29, 2017 in the Hallenstadion in Zurich .

Nine riders finished the first round of the Classic, the World Cup jumping in Zurich, with a clear round. There were hardly any time penalties in the first round. In the jump-off of the best nine participants, less favored riders rode to the front of the field: As the second starter in the jump-off, Colombian Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo and Admara took the lead with a clear lead of 38.43 seconds. Eduardo Álvarez Aznar was again more than two seconds faster and made no mistakes, taking the lead with his 12-year-old gelding Rokfeller de Pleville . Max Kühner was the last to start in the jump-off. Kühner, who had taken part in almost every World Cup competition in the Western European League up to this point, but was only able to collect 18 points, also made no mistakes and took risks especially on the last line of the jump-off, which was rewarded with second place. In fourth place came William Whitaker with the stallion Utamaro d'Ecaussines , which he took over from Joe Clee in the summer , with no mistakes in a time of 38.82 seconds.

12th test: Bordeaux

The penultimate stage of the Western European Show Jumping League was held at the beginning of February 2017: the twelfth test of the Western European League took place as part of Jumping International de Bordeaux . This second French World Cup will be held from February 3rd to 5th, 2017 in the Parc de Expositions de Bordeaux .

In the normal course of the World Cup jumping on the evening of the tournament Saturday there was an enormous number of faultless rides, a good half of the riders (19 of 39) set up the jump-off. Right at the beginning of the jump-off, Leopold van Asten managed a quick clear round with Zidane , which should bring him to second place in the end. Also early in the jump-off were Guido Klatte with Qinghai and Markus Brinkmann with the 10-year-old gelding Dylon , flawless rides in 38.09 and just under 40 seconds brought them third and fifth place respectively as well as good chances of participating at the world cup finals. While an obstacle mistake ruined Ludger Beerbaum's chance to achieve a top position in this test with Chiara , the victory remained in France. Julien Epaillard and the 13-year-old Quick Star son Quatrin de la Roque secured first place in less than 36 seconds.

13th test: Gothenburg

After the World Cup final of the 2015/2016 season had been held in Gothenburg a good ten months earlier, the Gothenburg Horse Show again marked the end of the Western European League. The tournament was held from February 22nd to 26th, 2017; on February 26th, the show jumpers had the last chance to score World Cup points.

In the first round of the World Cup, the allowed time was chosen generously, none of the 33 participants received time penalties for exceeding the allowed time. The entry into the jump-off was achieved by 12 riders with a faultless ride.

Olivier Robert and Quenelle du Py took the lead early in the jump-off , Robert Smith and the 12-year-old mare Bavi crossed the finish line in just eight hundredths of a second slower time (fourth and fifth in the end result). Christian Ahlmann had a good chance of taking the lead, crossing the finish line in 37.96 seconds with Colorit . An obstacle error at the jump of the double combination threw him back and also robbed him of his last chance to qualify for the World Cup finals. However, the top position was taken by the next starter in the jump-off: Maikel van der Vleuten crossed the finish line with his successful horse Verdi without any mistakes, with a time that was one second below Ahlmann's time.

While van der Vleuten's compatriot Leopold van Asten was able to take second place in the meantime, the penultimate starter achieved a new best in the jump-off: to the cheers of the Swedish audience, Henrik von Eckermann took first place with the 11-year-old mare Mary Lou . Simon Delestre was the last rider to compete in the jump-off, with the most successful show jumping horse of 2016, Chesall . But he also made a mistake, so that the win went to Henrik von Eckermann.

Overall rating

On the basis of the overall ranking, after all the special tests were completed, it was determined which 18 riders from the states in the Western European League qualify for the final. In addition, other riders from other countries could qualify for the World Cup finals via the Western European League, provided they live in the Central / Western European League.

The riders were also able to collect points in the North American World Cup (see “others” in the table below). Rating points from other World Cup leagues in the world, however, are not transferred to the Western European League. The number of tests in which a rider can collect points is limited to seven.

The regulations can be found in the main article on the Show Jumping World Cup .

Subject to the last evaluation test of the North American League at the beginning of March 2017, the overall ranking was as follows: With five safely qualified riders from the Western European League and Christian Heineking , who qualifies via the North American League and who lives in Texas , Germany will probably have the largest contingent of a European nation at the World Cup final . A special feature here is that only Marcus Ehning from the German championship squad was able to qualify for this.

France follows in “second place” with three show jumpers qualified for Omaha. In addition to two well-qualified riders from Switzerland, Martin Fuchs can hope to move up into the group of qualified riders, and for Austria Max Kühner has received the right to start the World Cup final for the second time.
