The 2016 World Cup final in show jumping and dressage was the final of the World Cup series in two equestrian disciplines . It was held from March 24th to 28th, 2016 in the Scandinavium in Gothenburg .

Equestrian sport in Gothenburg

The Göteborg Horse Show takes place every year in Gothenburg, usually in February. The event was held for the first time in spring 1977, and in 2016 the 40th anniversary of the tournament was celebrated with the World Cup final. The tournament has a long World Cup tradition, it includes a World Cup test in show jumping and a World Cup test in dressage .

It is also a tradition to hold World Cup finals here; the first show jumping final took place here in 1979. In no other place did so many World Cup finals take place in both dressage and show jumping as in Gothenburg: In 1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2008 and 2013 the Show jumping finals held. In dressage, the World Cup finals in 1989, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2003 and also in 2013 took place here.

Qualified participants

There were a large number of cancellations from the Western European League: Don Johnson , who Isabell Werth had planned for the World Cup final, was still behind in training after an injury; Defending champion Charlotte Dujardin had only Uthopia qualified for the World Cup final, disagreements about the ownership situation prevented the start in Gothenburg. Beatriz Ferrer-Salat also did not start, with a view to the Olympic Games, she waived the long journey from Spain to Sweden.

Procedure and results

Grand Prix

The Grand Prix was held on the afternoon of March 25th (Friday) . This participation in this initial test of the World Cup final was mandatory for all participating dressage riders, but the result has no bearing on the outcome of the World Cup final.

In the Grand Prix, the results were close together, with the first three places showing a difference in results of less than half a percentage point. The victory went to Hans Peter Minderhoud and the 15-year-old Firt , followed in the ranking by the Swedes Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén (who with Don Auriello had to accept significant point deductions for the greeting lineup, where the gelding did not stop at first and then galloped instead of trot) and Patrik Kittel (who convinced with the 17-year-old Scandic with a very consistent approach and good lessons in the piaffe passage tour, but only got grades between 4.5 and 7.0 in the step lessons).

The third-placed couple in the World Cup final last year, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Unee BB, could not fully exploit their potential. Although Unee presented himself very well and ran much more consistently than at his last World Cup test in Neumünster, he was over motivated, so that mistakes crept in. In the end, they came in fourth with more than one percent difference to third-placed Kittel.

Grand Prix Freestyle (Final)

On Sunday afternoon (March 27th), after a day free of examinations, the dressage riders started the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday afternoon. The 2016 World Cup winner was determined based on the result of this test. The prize money for this test included the enormous amount of 225,000 euros for dressage, of which 50,000 euros went to the winner.

The result of the Grand Prix Freestyle essentially confirmed the result of the Grand Prix: The victory went to Hans Peter Minderhoud and Flirt , who showed a technically clean and confident ride, which almost all judges rewarded with over 78 percent with an A grade. The judges assessed positively that the passengers were more even than in the Grand Prix. With B grades well over 80 percent, Minderhoud got a final score of over 82.357 percent.

Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén came in second. Again she messed up the greeting line- up with Don Auriello , her horse did not stop at first and even went backwards. Inadequate activity in the hindquarters and mistakes in the exchange of two resulted in deductions in the A grade. In the B-grade she got similar values as Minderhoud, the overall grade was a good percentage point lower. In third place - one place better than in the Grand Prix - came Jessica von Bredow-Werndl with Unee BB , as in the previous year . As in the Grand Prix, Unee was in top form, but mistakes in the single and double changes as well as when changing the trot traversal made a tangible victory impossible. While she got similar values in the B-grade as the participants placed before her, the errors led to clear deductions in the A-grade, so that in the end a final result of 80.464 percent came about. This result corresponded exactly to her mark of the previous year's World Cup final.

Patrik Kittel's 17-year-old horse Scandic was infected by the atmosphere in the hall. This had an effect on the quality of the lessons, he could not walk calmly when walking, and in the traversals there were clear deficits in position and bending. A grades of mostly below 75 percent clearly depressed his result, he came in fourth place with a clear gap.

Procedure and results

World cup

1st partial examination

After a voluntary training test on the evening of March 23rd, the show jumping World Cup final started two days later: On Friday evening (March 25th) the first partial test of the final was held. Here the participants competed in a time jumping test . The result was then, as explained in the article FEI World Cup Show Jumping , converted into points.

The clear victory was delivered by Pénélope Leprevost, who with Vagabond de la Pomme was over two seconds faster than her compatriot, runner-up Simon Delestre. In third place came Daniel Deußer with his successful horse Cornet d'Amour . Five of the six German riders made no mistakes, only Christian Ahlmann had two obstacle errors with Colorit , which threw him back to 25th place. With the defending champion Steve Guerdat and Romain Duguet, two riders from Switzerland made it into the top 10 participants.

Max Kühner , who has been riding for Austria since the beginning of 2015, was the first Austrian to take part in a World Cup final in 18 years. The first partial test went unhappy for him, with the only nine-year-old mare Electric Touch he collected 20 penalty points, which, when added to his time, meant a result of 89.33 seconds and thus third from bottom.

Laura Renwick was the only British participant in the World Cup final that was unable to even start the World Cup final. Her horse Bintang II had probably got stuck in his box the night before, because he did not seem fit enough for the test when he was riding, Renwick withdrew her start. After his ride, the World Cup final for the Egyptian participant, Mohamed Talaat, was over. The stewards found blood on the flank of Talaat's horse and disqualified the couple.

2nd partial examination

Exactly one day after the 1st partial test, the show jumpers contested their second final partial test. This was a jumping competition with one jump-off .

The previous evening, the winner of the Chinese World Cup, Zhiwen Zhao, withdrew his horse Pommeau de Heup from the competition. There was a cut on the right hind leg.

The starting field of 33 riders was reduced in the first round of the second partial test by two Americans who gave up or were eliminated. Seven starter pairs made it into the jump-off of the test with one faultless lap. Christian Ahlmann was the first participant in the jump-off. He had changed the horse after the poor result of the previous day and performed with Taloubet Z at. With this he managed a flawless ride in under 37 seconds in the jump-off, a performance that no other rider was able to achieve.

Points were also awarded on the basis of the result of this test. The winner received one point more than riders participated in the World Cup finals; the runner-up received one point less than riders took part in the test; all subsequent riders each received one point less than the participant placed in front of you.

The points achieved in the first two partial exams were added together. These were then converted into error points.

After the second partial test, Steve Guerdat was in the lead, with Marcus Ehning two penalty points behind him. Third place was shared by Harrie Smolders and Daniel Deußer with three penalty points.

3rd partial examination

The show jumping World Cup final came to an end with the third partial test. This was the last test of the tournament, it was carried out on March 28th from 1pm. This partial test was organized as a jumping competition with two different rounds . She was not ridden against time, but an allowable time was provided.

The third test was again very challenging. Course designer Santiago Varela received great praise. After the course builder there was heavily criticized at the World Cup final last year because of the difficult to ride courses, Varela created courses that did not put the less strong couples at risk and still sorted the field of participants well. In the first round of this final test only 9 out of 26 riders crossed the finish line without fail. For example, Simon Delestre and Nicola Philippaerts each received eight penalty points from the previous top group . Max Kühner was able to make another leap forward with a faultless lap.

In the second round there were still 20 riders with their horses at the start, nine of them received no further penalty points. Marcus Ehning was able to secure fourth place with Cornado NRW after losing his second place with a mistake on the first lap of the day. Harrie Smolders and Daniel Deußer also made no mistakes and therefore both got an overall score of three penalty points. However, Smolders rode his horse Emerald a good half a second faster than Deußer on the last lap, which secured him second place. Last rider was last year's winner Steve Guerdat. With Corbinian he managed the fifth clear round, this performance brought him the second World Cup victory in a row.
