Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (born June 2, 1962 in Lund , Skåne län ) is a Swedish show jumper and individual silver medalist at the 2008 Summer Olympics.

From January to October 2012 he was the first Swede to be world number one in show jumping. In June 2013 it was ranked ninth in the world.

Career

Rolf-Göran Bengtsson grew up as the son of a horse breeder and rural rider. Even when he was still at school, he competed in horse shows in his home country, and in 1977 and 1979 he became the Swedish champion in pony eventing . After completing his school career, Bengtsson trained as a mechanic for agricultural machinery and then worked in this profession for six years. Then Bengtsson went to the stable of the British show jumper David Broome for two months . As a result, Bengtsson converted his parents' business into a training stable and took horses into riding. In 1997 he received an offer from Jan Tops to work as a rider in his stable in Valkenswaard. Bengtsson accepted this offer and leased the parental facility - which is still the case today. Since 2003, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson has been running a show stable together with the former Danish show jumper Bo Kristoffersen on the grounds of Breido Graf zu Rantzau near Itzehoe.

Rolf-Göran Bengtsson celebrated his first successes at international championships between 1994 and 1996 with the horse Paradiso .

From 2006 to 2009 he competed with the horse Ninja at international championships. At the World Equestrian Games in Aachen in 2006 he reached 12th place with the team and 19th place in the individual ranking. At the 2007 European Championships in Mannheim, he achieved 5th place with the team and 32nd place in the individual ranking. He celebrated one of the greatest successes of his career when he won the individual silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games . Here he finished eighth with the team. Rolf-Göran Bengtsson reached 8th place in the team ranking and 7th place in the individual ranking at the 2009 European Championships in Windsor.

At the 2011 European Championships , he won individual gold for the first time with Ninja , and came fifth with the team. In 2012 he was sixth with Casall at the World Cup finals .

At the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics , he was honored to be the flag bearer of the Swedish team .

Private life

Bengtsson lives in Breitenburg in Schleswig-Holstein where he runs the Stall Bengtsson & Kristoffersen GmbH . Stall Bengtsson & Kristoffersen GmbH has leased stables in Schloss Breitenburg . Bengtsson has been married to the German show jumper Evi Penzlin since August 10, 2015 . They have a daughter together. On June 13, 2015, Penzlin became the German women's champion at the Balve Optimum .
