Pakenham is a city in the greater Melbourne area in the Australian state of Victoria . Pakenham is located in the southeast of the city of 56 km away and belongs to the local administrative area Shire of Cardinia . In the last census carried out in 2006 , Pakenham had 18,808 inhabitants. Development areas such as Lakeside and Heritage Springs suggest a further increase in Pakenham's population.

The residents of Pakenham often just call their hometown “Packy” for short.

history

Pakenham was named after Sir Edward Pakenham , a British general who fought against the French troops of Napoleon Bonaparte in Spain at the beginning of the 19th century .

The original Pakenham Post Office opened on February 1, 1859, renamed Pakenham West in 1971 , and closed in 1974. The remaining post office was founded on June 11, 1888 as the Pakenham Railway Station Post Office , renamed Pakenham East in 1908 and finally Pakenham in 1971 .

Pakenham Railway Station opened on October 8, 1877.

Pakenham is on the Melbourne to Gippsland railway line . Pakenham station marks the end of the electrified rail line for suburban connections to Melbourne. A second train station is under construction and is located in the Lakeside development area. This station does not yet have a fixed name. Choices are Lakeside Railway Station and Cardinia Road Railway Station . The government makes a final decision.

Pakenham is on the Princes Highway. This bypass reduces travel times from Melbourne to Gippsland and provides Pakenham with convenient transport links.

Schools and public institutions

Pakenham's public facilities include sports facilities, a swimming center and a community center.

The "Cardinia LiFE" swimming center includes a 25 m indoor pool, a 50 m outdoor pool, gymnastics and fitness areas and is operated by the YMCA Victoria.

Pakenham owns a tennis club, but plans to create a second one. Investments of 20 million Australian dollars (AUD) in a new clubhouse are planned.

State schools are the four elementary schools Pakenham Consolidated Primary School, Pakenham Hills Primary School, Pakenham Springs Primary School, Pakenham Lakeside Primary School, and Pakenham Secondary School . At denominational schools , Pakenham owns St Patrick's Catholic Primary .

Private schools are Beaconhills College, Chairo Christian School, and Lakeside Lutheran College .

The community center houses the Salvation Army and the LLINC (Living and Learning Incorporated) vocational training facility.

Pakenham has a variety of Australian chain stores. There is a Safeway, three Coles, a target and a Miter 10 MEGA store built in 1954. In August 2009, the local government announced the construction of an A $ 80 million mall near the Pakenham Library, including a Woolworth supermarket and Big W store, and parking for 1,150 cars. The construction project should be completed by February 2011.

Sports

Sports activities in Pakenham are limited to horse racing , golf and soccer .

The Pakenham Racing Club hosts eleven horse races annually, including the Pakenham Cup meeting in March. Pakenham Picnic Racing Club also holds a New Year's Day meeting at the racetrack.

You can play golf at the Pakenham and District Golf Club on Oaktree Drive.

The Pakenham Australian Rules Football team plays in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League .

Pakenham is also known as the origin of "Extreme Feeting", an extreme sport in which the athletes perform freestyle stunts while running and jumping over obstacles. In 2008, the founders got into legal trouble for improperly using copyrighted songs for extreme Feeting videos.
