Global Champions Tour 2012

The Global Champions Tour 2012 is the seventh season of the Global Champions Tour , an international show jumping series . In addition to the FEI Nations Cup, it is the most important tournament series in the “green season” (period in which riding tournaments can be held outside of halls due to the weather).

The 2012 season is the fifth season as an officially recognized tournament series by the FEI . The series founder Jan Tops continues to organize the series .

Course of the tournament series

The tournaments that take place as part of the Global Champions Tour 2012 are mostly held in Europe (ten stations). The beginning and end of the season are stages on the Arabian Peninsula. In addition to France, two Global Champions Tour stations were held in Germany for the first time in 2012.

All tournaments are advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping.

The special stages take place on Saturday afternoons or evenings. They are advertised as a jumping competition with two different rounds and jump-offs , the obstacle height is up to 1.60 meters.

The second round of the tests is achieved by the best 18 riders of the first round or all riders with faultless rides, provided that there are more than 18. The jump-off is reached by the participants who were ranked first after the two rounds (usually with no mistakes in both rounds).

Change of regulations

The series runs from April 5th to November 24th in 2012. This makes it a little shorter in time than the 2011 season, but with thirteen stages it includes more stations than ever before. Due to this time consolidation, criticism arose at the end of 2011. Due to the very early Olympic Games in 2012 and the increase in the number of Global Champions Tour stations, the European equestrian associations in particular saw a threat to the Nations Cup tournaments. However, these are decisive for the future of jumping at the future Olympic Games.

Therefore the European Equestrian Federation (umbrella organization of the European equestrian federations) called for a rule change. In the future, the most important nations' prizes should no longer coincide with other CSI 5 * tournaments, in particular with GCT tournaments. However, this was the case several times in the 2012 tournament calendar. The International Jumping Rider Club (IJRC; representation of the interests of show jumpers who are among the top 100 in the world rankings) took up this topic and spoke with a two-thirds majority that only half of the GCT stations should be included in the overall ranking . The FEI agreed with the IJRC.

Thus, for each rider, only the points earned in seven GCT tests count for the overall Global Champions Tour ranking.

media

As in previous years, Eurosport is the media partner of the Global Champions Tour and broadcasts the second round and the jump-off of the special stages live, mostly late on Saturday evening.

Outside of TV broadcasts, many of the exams of the Global Champions Tour tournaments will be broadcast live on the Global Champions Tour website.

The exams

1st test: Doha

The Qatar Global Champions Tour took place from April 5 to April 7, 2012 at the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club in Doha .

The special stage was held on April 7, 2012 from 6.30 p.m. local time and was endowed with € 450,000. The course in the round arena in Doha was built by the Italian course designer Uliano Vezzani.

15 riders competed in the first round without faults, one rider with a time penalty and the two fastest riders with four penalty points also qualified for the second round. The second round turned out to be a solvable task for most of the riders, but the time allowed proved to be demanding: three riders and their horses had a time penalty point, three other rider-horse pairs also had time penalties. Seven riders remained clear in both rounds.

Last year's overall winner, Edwina Tops-Alexander, was the first to start in the jump-off. With her experienced gelding Itot du Château, she showed a fast, faultless ride. Christian Ahlmann was the second jump-off participant: he rode at high speed and missed the right distance to the second jump with Codex One , in the end he had eight penalty points. The riders who followed did not manage to set Tops-Alexander's time correctly either, so she won the test.

2nd test: Oliva

For the first time, the Spanish Global Champions Tour tournament did not take place directly in Valencia , but a good 80 kilometers south in Oliva on the Mediterranean coast. The venue was a newly built riding facility in the Oliva Nova Beach and Golf Resort . This was inaugurated in February and March of that year with several CSI 2 * tournaments as part of the new Mediterranean Equestrian Tour .

The CSI 5 * tournament will take place from May 4th to 6th, 2012, the GCT special stage was held on May 5th from 4:45 pm local time. The course was created by Frank Rothenberger. In the first round of the test, the time allowed turned out to be a particular difficulty. Only five out of 40 riders had more than eight penalty points; three horse-rider pairs did not finish the course of the first round.

All riders reached the second round with no obstacle errors, riders with less than four penalty points and with Marcus Ehning the fastest rider with four penalty points. In the second lap there were obstacle errors and time penalties for several riders. After a refusal, Kevin Staut was able to prevent his fall, but his stirrup came off; he gave up in succession.

The jump-off was achieved by five riders with their horses. First Michael Whitaker, then Ben Maher, took the lead. After Maher, no rider managed to remain flawless.

3rd exam: Hamburg

The first stage of the Global Champions Tour 2012 in Germany, the German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby , will take place from May 16 to May 20, 2012 in Hamburg - Klein Flottbek . The Grand Prix of Hamburg, the GCT evaluation test of this tournament, took place on May 19 from 1:20 p.m. local time.

The course was planned by Frank Rothenberger, who has been a course builder in the show jumping and dressage derby for years. The first round was reasonably demanding for the rider, so that, in addition to all the riders who did not make any mistakes, the three fastest riders with four fault points could qualify for the second round. The time allowed for the riders in the second lap was also not particularly difficult. Compared to the first lap, the level of difficulty in the second lap was even higher, so that out of 18 horse-rider pairs only five qualified for the jump-off.

In addition to long galloping stretches, the jump-off also had several obstacles that could be ridden diagonally over shortened paths. All riders took these short distances and thus delivered a close jump-off. In the end, last year's winner, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Nick Skelton, stayed clear, but the latter was over a second faster with Big Star and thus won the test.

4th exam: Wiesbaden

The International Whitsun tournament in Wiesbaden was part of the Global Champions Tour for the first time . This tournament, which is being held for the 76th time, will be held in the Biebrich Castle Park from May 25th to May 28th, 2012. The GCT Grand Prix was held on May 26, 2012 at 4:15 p.m.

As with the two previous special stages, the jumping course in Wiesbaden was also designed by Frank Rothenberger. In addition to the faultless riders from the first round, four riders with four penalty points and one rider who had two penalty points in the first round also qualified for the second round. In the second lap, many of the 18 remaining starters had to score four penalty points, only two horse-rider pairs remained clear here as well.

Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum was the first to start the jump-off, her horse Bella Donna denying a course of this difficulty for the first time. She stayed flawless. After her the Frenchman Olivier Guillon started, who also made no mistakes with his experienced horse Lord de Theize , but was two seconds faster.

5th exam: Cannes

Global Champions Tour Grand Prix de la Ville de Cannes: champagne shower on the winner's podium

Two stations of the Global Champions Tour will again be held in France. The first of these was the special stage at the Jumping Cannes tournament from June 14 to June 16, 2012 . This took place in the Stade des Hespérides in Cannes .

The Grand Prix de la Ville de Cannes , the special stage of the GCT, took place under floodlights on Saturday evening. The jumping course was designed by Uliano Vezzani. The first round was demanding, 13 out of 46 riders had twelve or more penalty points. From a German point of view, the first round was not very successful: Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum , Ludger Beerbaum and Philipp Weishaupt did not finish the round.

The second round, which included, among other things, three double combinations, was completed by seven horse-rider pairs without a mistake, a total of three starter pairs achieved a clear round in both rounds that evening and thus qualified for the jump-off. Rolf-Göran Bengtsson took the lead as the first starter, Gerco Schröder followed and took the lead with a lap 16 hundredths of a second faster. The last starter was the winner of the last two years, Edwina Tops-Alexander. She also showed a quick ride with her horse Itot du Château , but failed to match the times of her two competitors.

6th test: Monaco

The Monaco Global Champions Tour tournament will take place from June 28th to June 30th, 2012 on the banks of Boulevard Albert 1er at Port Hercule. The tournament will take place on a provisionally raised clay court for the event.

As in Cannes two weeks earlier, the special stage, which was held on Saturday evening from 6:00 p.m., was carried out under floodlights. The course was built again by Uliano Vezzani on the rather small tournament area (about 30 by 70 meters). The name of the test ( Grand Prix du Prince de Monaco ) is Prince Albert II , who also held the award ceremony together with his niece Charlotte Casiraghi.

All nine riders from the first round qualified with four points from the first round, two riders with a time penalty and the seven riders who with their horses did not make mistakes in the first round. In the second round a total of seven riders remained without penalty points, of which four riders were faultless in both rounds.

The Swiss rider Christina Liebherr was the first to take part in the final jump-off, but had an obstacle drop and was fourth. The surprise of the tournament was the Moroccan Abdelkebir Ouaddar, who competed in a special stage of the Global Champions Tour for the first time. Ouaddar went with the nine-year-old gelding Porche du Fruitier, owned by King Mohammed VI. as the second starter in the jump-off and finished third in this test. After him, Hans-Dieter Dreher and Kevin Staut started, who made no mistakes and each took the lead. Staut won the test with the Belgian gelding Reveur de Hurtebise .

7th test: Portugal

The Portuguese stage of the Global Champions Tour took place in the Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais . Since the neighboring Estoril is advertised as a sports tourism region with a large advertising campaign, Estoril is usually named as the venue.

The CSI 5 * tournament only lasted two days in 2012, July 13th and 14th, and a 1 * CSI tournament was held at the same location from July 12th to 14th. The GCT special stage, the Grande Prémio Turismo de Portugal, was held on July 14, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. local time, the course was designed by Frank Rothenberger.

Due to the approaching Olympic Games, many riders nominated for the Summer Olympic Games no longer competed with their top horses, in contrast to this, other riders competed with their first horses. For many riders, the first round turned out to be an easily solvable task, 20 horse-rider pairs remained faultless and qualified for the second round. The second round was made significantly more difficult, six of 20 riders made it into the jump-off with another clear round.

Philipp Weishaupt was one of the first to start with the stallion Leoville in the jump-off. Both showed a very fast, faultless lap and were over four seconds faster than the previous leader, Kamal Bahamdan . The following riders were now trying to catch up with Weishaupt, but they did not succeed.

8th exam: Chantilly

The second French stage of the Global Champions Tour took place from July 20 to July 22, 2012 on the grounds of the racecourse on the edge of the Castle of Chantilly . The tournament was scheduled just a few days before the start of the Summer Olympics in London on July 27th, and the show jumping competitions there begin on August 4th.

The Global Champions Tour special stage in Chantilly was held on July 21st from 3:30 pm. The course designer was Uliano Vezzani. After there had been a lot of faultless riders in the first lap at the Portuguese stage a week earlier, the course was much more difficult, only five riders remained flawless in the first lap. In addition, all riders reached the second round with four and five penalty points.

In this second round there were significantly more clear rounds, a total of 13 of 18 horse-rider pairs remained faultless. Three riders with their horses made a double zero lap. Beezie Madden was the first rider to go into the jump-off and put her competitors under pressure with a fast time of 39.15 seconds. Karim El Zoghby, who went into the jump-off as an outsider, had an obstacle drop early in the course. As the last starter, Hans-Dieter Dreher went into the jump-off circuit with the stallion Magnus Romeo . This also showed a very fast lap and won with an advantage of about three tenths of a second.

9. Examination: Valkenswaard

After a break of several weeks due to the Olympic Games, the Global Champions Tour continued from August 17 to August 19, 2012 in the Netherlands. The Netherlands' Global Champions Tour tournament takes place at the hometown of series founder Jan Tops in Valkenswaard .

The special stage of the GCT took place on August 18, 2012 from 2:30 p.m. The course was designed by Uliano Vezzani. Of 48 starters, twelve remained faultless in the first lap. Also for the second round three riders qualified with one time penalty and the three fastest riders with four penalty points. In the second lap no rider managed to stay clear for a long time. The first was Philipp Weishaupt with no penalty points, but he had with Catoki as recorded a time penalty in the first round and came at the end of seventh.

On the other hand, the riders who made no mistakes in the first round also managed the second round without any problems, half of them again remained without errors. With that, six horse-rider pairs entered the jump-off. In the jump-off, three riders managed a faultless lap, each faster than the previously started participant. The last three riders failed, however, they each had one or two obstacle errors.

10th exam: Lausanne

In the 2012 season, the Global Champions Tour made its first stop in Switzerland. The FEI , CAS and IOC offices in Lausanne were chosen as the venue . The Lausanne International Horse Show will be held from September 14th to September 16th 2012 on the Place de Bellerive on Lake Geneva .

The Grand Prix, which was held here for the first time, was designed by the Swiss course designer Rolf Lüdi. The exam took place on September 15, 2012 at 6 p.m. 18 participants survived the first round without any obstacle errors, which corresponds exactly to the number of riders who qualify for the second round. One of these participants had a time penalty. The five Swiss riders did not qualify for the second handling. The best starter from Switzerland was Janika Sprunger , who came 25th with Palloubet d'Halong .

In the second lap, a third of the starting pairs managed to make no mistakes. Marco Kutscher lost his footing after jumping and fell from the back of his stallion Cornet Obolensky . The three other German starters in the second round each had an obstacle drop and thus came in ninth to eleven. In the jump-off of the remaining six who did not make a mistake, only two participants managed to remain without mistakes for the third time. Laura Kraut and her gray gelding Cedric won with a lead of almost three seconds .

11. Examination: Vienna

A week after Lausanne, a Global Champions Tour test was held in Austria for the first time. The Vienna Masters tournament takes place under the motto Horse City on the Vienna City Hall Square . The tournament, organized by an organizing committee headed by show jumper Thomas Frühmann , will take place from September 20 to September 23, 2012.

The GCT test, the Grand Prix of Vienna, was held on September 22, 2012 from 6:00 p.m., the course designer was Frank Rothenberger. Power Horse was the main sponsor of the test . The first round was very selective, only 20 of 46 starters achieved a result of four penalty points or better. Five riders made a flawless first lap with their horses. As in Lausanne a week before, no rider from the host country made it into the second round of the best 18 participants in Vienna. The best Austrian rider was Stefan Eder with Chilli van Dijk NRW in 29th place.

The second lap was no less demanding, five riders stayed clear. For the second time, three participants were free of mistakes and thus qualified for the jump-off. Gerco Schröder was the first to start with London . It was only possible to start Schröder with his Olympic horse shortly before the tournament, as it was part of the bankruptcy estate of Schröder's insolvent sponsor Eurocommerce. Both were clear a third time and ended up in third place. The two riders who followed were faster in the jump-off, Pénélope Leprevost won with a lead of one and a half seconds over Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum.

12th exam: Abu Dhabi

For the second time, Abu Dhabi hosted a stage of the Global Champions Tour. The tournament took place from November 22nd to November 24th, 2012 at the Al-Forsan International Sports Resort , the special stage was held on November 24th from 6:45 pm local time.

Preliminary decisions were already made in the first lap in Abu Dhabi: Edwina Tops-Alexander and Rolf-Göran Bengtsson , who both had the same points in the overall standings , did not make it into the second lap and were therefore unable to collect any more points. The same applied to Christian Ahlmann with Taloubet Z, who had previously placed third in the overall standings . Gerco Schröder was the first starter in the second lap who was pre-stressed without errors from the first lap. He rode a clean lap with London . Schröder was followed by ten riders who also went into the second round without penalty points. Nine riders in a row had mistakes with their horses, so that they were not allowed to enter a jump-off. Only Katharina Offel was the last rider to make no mistakes with Fidji Island and thus secured the jump-off.

In the jump-off, Schröder and London showed a quick ride and crossed the finish line without a mistake. Offel and Fidji Island showed just such a lap and were eight hundredths of a second faster, which brought them the victory.
