Global Champions Tour 2019

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Global Champions Tour 2019 was the 14th season of the Global Champions Tour , an international tournament series. It is considered one of the most important series in show jumping . Parallel to the Global Champions Tour, another series of tests, the Global Champions League 2019 team competition , was held for the fourth time . Both series are tournament series recognized by the FEI .

Name sponsor and timepiece of the Global Champions Tour (GCT) was Longines , the season was named Longines Global Champions Tour 2019 .

Course of the tournament series

With the 2019 season, the tournament series grew again and had reached the maximum number of 20 GCT tournaments permitted by the regulations. This comprised 19 normal valuation tournaments as well as a playoff tournament for the second time at the end of the year. In Europe, a Swedish tournament was added to the GCT calendar for the first time. The new 18th and 19th stages should lead the tournament series to North America on two consecutive weekends. In July 2019, however, it was announced that the planned GCT / GCL tournament in Montreal would not take place. New York City, thus as the 18th stage, will be the end of the season before the playoff tournament in Prague.

The year-long final stage in Doha, however, changed at the very beginning of the season. The first rating points were awarded on March 2, 2019, and the riders had the last chance to score points on September 28, 2019.

All tournaments were  advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping.

Global Champions League

The Global Champions League (GCL) is a series of tests for teams in which two riders from a team (which usually consists of five riders) compete as one team per test. The teams were composed independently of the nationalities of the riders.

The course of the GCL stages remained unchanged compared to the previous year: In a first partial test on Thursday or Friday, the riders competed in an error-time jumping test (one round) . The second test took place on Saturday just before the Global Champions Tour stage. Here, too, it was an error-time jumping competition with only one round. In the second test the teams could send other riders and horses to the start.

The courses of both exams had obstacle heights of 1.50 to 1.60 meters. The starting order of the teams in the second test was based on their results in the first sub-test. The team result was calculated by adding the penalty points of the riders competing for the team in both partial tests. In the event of a penalty point tie, the addition of the times of the second round will decide. In addition to the prize money for both exams, each GCL stage was endowed with 200,000 euros.

The number of teams decreased to 16 compared to 2018, the number of riders per team increased to six. Of the teams, 15 kept their names. The teams thus comprised the following tabs:

Global Champions Tour

The special stages of the Global Champions Tour were held on Saturday afternoon or evening, after the second stage of the Global Champions League. The valuation tests were advertised as jumping competitions with normal circulation and a jump- off, the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters.

Up to 35 riders were allowed to start each GCT special test. The prize money for the special stage was at least 300,000 per stage .

media

Eurosport is one of the media partners of the Global Champions Tour . The GCT exams were broadcast on Eurosport 1 , time-shifted or as a live broadcast. From the second stage, Eurosport 1 also showed half-hour summaries of the GCL exams. The GCT and GCL-stages and many other tests of the tournaments were on the websites of the two tournament series via live stream transmitted.

The stages

Doha

At the beginning of March 2019, two CSI 5 * tournaments were held in the Qatari capital Doha on two consecutive weekends. Both were carried out at the Al Shaqab equestrian center . The GCT tournament previously held in November was brought forward in 2019 and was the first of these two tournaments from February 28 to March 2.

While the tournament season on the Arabian Peninsula, which ran from November to March, ended, the tournament was one of the first outdoor tournament starts for many European riders after the indoor season that was still running.

Global Champions League: Adapted to the start of the green season, the first partial test of the Global Champions League in Doha was rather easy, 10 of the 16 teams remained flawless. Although it was only built at a height of 1.55 meters, the course designed by Uliano Vezzani for the second part of the test was significantly more demanding. Only two teams managed to stay free of penalty points here. While the London Knights did not make it to the top (fifth place) due to five penalty points from Emily Moffitt from the first partial test, the Shanghai Swans won. Daniel Deußer and Pius Schwizer had no faults with their horses in both tests and thus secured their team a clear victory.

Global Champions Tour: As with the Global Champions League three hours earlier, the challenge of the course was also high in the Global Champions Tour special stage. Only five of the 33 starter pairs managed a flawless ride. In the jump-off, Julien Epaillard was the first starter to cross the finish line in just 40.11 seconds without any mistakes. Alberto Zorzi, Frank Schuttert and Nicola Philippaerts deprived themselves of their chance to win due to mistakes or times that were clearly too slow. So only Ben Maher had the chance to change leadership. With Explosion W he was able to build on last year's form, made no mistakes and was quick. But even his time of 40.55 seconds was not enough, so that Epaillard became the first GCT winner of 2019.

Mexico city

The second stage of the GCT / GCL season took place on the weekend after the World Cup final in Gothenburg . The tournament was held from April 11th to 13th, 2019 in Mexico City on the highest tournament course in this series of tournaments (approx. 2300 meters above sea level), the Campo Marte .

Global Champions League: In the first partial test of the GCL in Mexico, over half of the riders made no mistakes. As a result, seven of the teams had not collected any penalty points, so the second partial test had to bring the decision. In fact, none of the teams managed to complete the second partial test without errors. The Cannes stars (Jane Richard Philips and Abdel Said) mastered the second course best with only two penalty points. But in the first test they had already received 14 penalty points, in the final result place twelve. As in Doha, the Shanghai Swans also secured victory in Mexico.

Global Champions Tour: Despite the very large tournament area, the time allowed in the normal round of the GCT Grand Prix of Mexico hardly played a role. In the normal circuit of the colorfully designed course built by Javier Trenor, 12 horse-rider pairs remained without errors. The first two flawless rides in the jump-off, ridden by Simon Delestre and Daniel Deußer, were still rather slow with times of over 42 seconds. A good two seconds faster was Harrie Smolders with Don Z . The fastest time in the jump-off was achieved by Bertram Allen with his gray mare Molly Malone V , but two poles fell within the required 38.08 seconds. Abdel Said's good form (10th place at the World Cup finals) continued and he took the lead with the 10-year-old mare Venise du Reverdy . But there shouldn't be enough time for victory either. A few rides remained without mistakes and under 40 seconds: Jérôme Guery succeeded in doing this with the Holsteiner Quel Homme and thus secured the victory bonus of 102,630 euros.

Miami Beach

Just one weekend after Mexico City, from April 18 to 20, 2019, Miami Beach was the next North American tour station. Accordingly, many European riders stayed with their horses directly in North America and only changed the venue with the tours. The tournament was held in a makeshift riding arena on the beach in Miami Beach.

Global Champions League: As in the previous year, the first round of the GCL in Miami in 2019 was demanding, under the special atmosphere (only a few cuts from the course to the water of the ocean) only four clear rounds were achieved. In addition, the allowed time was chosen to be extremely tight, well over half of the riders received time penalties. After this test, the St Tropez Pirates (3 penalty points) were in the lead ahead of the Prague Lions (5 penalty points). Also with five penalty points, but slower, the Shanghai Swans had a top starting position again.

The second partial test proved to be easier for riders and horses to manage, 37 riders got four or a few penalty points. Time errors hardly ever occurred. Even so, only two teams managed to stay here without making a mistake. One of them were the Berlin Eagles (Malin Baryard-Johnsson and Emil Hallundbæk), who made it to third place. The Miami Celtics also succeeded, taking the lead with just six penalty points. Two obstacle mistakes by Anna Kellnerová threw the Prague Lions back to fifth, one place behind the Shanghai Swans. The St Tropez Pirates were the last team to miss their chance to win, Athina Onassis made a jumping fault with the 13-year-old Going Global . Consequently, the victory went to the Miami Celtics.

Global Champions Tour: After there had been a lot of zero-error rides in the Global Champions League partial test, Uliano Vezzani set the riders and horses in the course of the normal round of the GCT test a much more demanding task. Seven riders gave up after receiving eight or more penalty points. Eight pairs qualified for the jump-off.

The first five participants in the jump-off made all mistakes. It was only Pieter Devos who managed the first ride free of penalty points with the 11-year-old Zangersheid mare Claire Z. He was also fast, only Daniel Deußer and Scott Brash had a faster time with their horses. Malin Baryard-Johnsson also made no mistakes but was slower. Harrie Smolders, who had been on the podium a week earlier, was the last rider to attack Devos' time with Don Z. In the meantime, Smolders was halfway ahead and crossed the finish line without a mistake. But there was not enough time, he lost time in the second half of the jump-off course and crossed the finish line four hundredths of a second slower than Pieter Devos.

Shanghai

The Global Champions Tour 2019 also made a stop in China, one of the largest growth markets for equestrian sport. On the first weekend in May, from May 3rd to 5th, 2019, the Chinese stage of the GCT / GCL was on the program in Shanghai . The tournament was held in the immediate vicinity of the China Art Museum (China Art Palace).

Global Champions League: Although Friday was the first day of the tournament, the tournament schedule differed from the other tournaments in the series. Before the Global Champions Tour special stage on Saturday, the first round of the Global Champions League took place in Shanghai. The results of the teams differed widely: While four teams remained completely without errors, there were hardly any teams with few penalty points. Seven teams got 12 or more penalty points. The London Knights did not start in Shanghai.

The second round of the Global Champions League was held on Sunday afternoon. Due to the large differences in starting points on the first day, the four teams that had been in the lead after the first lap were also in one of the top five after the second lap. The Monaco Aces and the Paris Panthers were in the lead with the same penalty points after both laps. The victory for the Monaco Aces brought in particular the fast time of Julien Epaillard.

Global Champions Tour: Due to the quarantine regulations, the international top riders will not meet the local riders from China at the tournament in Shanghai. Nevertheless, a Chinese had qualified for the GCT Grand Prix: 18-year-old You Zhang, who trained in Europe, came 33rd out of 35 starters with his Estonian gelding Caesar . He was also only one of two participants with time penalties, the allowed time of 87 seconds was generous. Nine riders made it into the jump-off with a clear round.

Luciana Diniz and her 11-year-old Hanoverian Camargo presented in the jump-off with a slow zero-error round. Jur Vrieling took the lead again as the second starter. Darragh Kenny increased the pace significantly as the third starter, his lead time of (faultless) 38.06 seconds put the following starters under considerable pressure. The first “victim” of this was Alberto Zorzi as the fourth starter. With his black horse Ulane de Coquerie he took one turn too tight, the pair came to a stop in front of an obstacle without a suitable distance and had to start again. With eight time penalty points, he came in ninth place in the end. Only Danielle Goldstein, the penultimate starter, managed another ride without penalty points. But this ride prevented Kenny from winning: Goldstein and her mare Lizziemary were eight hundredths of a second faster than Darragh Kenny. With this, the couple starting for Israel secured their second Global Champions Tour victory after Cascais in 2017.

Madrid

The fourth stage of the Global Champions Tour / Global Champions League took the riders to Spain: the venue for the special stages was the 109th CSI in Madrid. The traditional tournament of the Spanish capital was held from May 17th to 19th, 2019 in the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid .

Global Champions League: As in Shanghai, the first partial test of the Global Champions League in Madrid was marked by contrasts in the results. Six teams crossed the finish line without a mistake, another finished this first round with only one time penalty. In contrast, five teams got 16 or 17 penalty points.

Even after the second partial test, the field of participants at the top remained close in terms of results. Six teams got four or less penalty points, three of them with no mistakes. The time required for the second lap had to be decided again: Team Madrid in Motion, represented by Eric van der Vleuten and his son Maikel van der Vleuten, was one of the slowest teams with a total time of 146.82 seconds and came in third . The riders and horses of the New York Empire were more than ten seconds faster. But Martin Fuchs and Ben Maher for the London Knights team undercut this time again and thus won the stage in Madrid.

Global Champions Tour: In the normal circuit of the GCT stage in Madrid, the course of which was designed by the Spanish course designer Santiago Varela, the time allowed was chosen tight. Six of the 26 riders who finished the round received time penalties. 13 couples had no obstacle errors, eleven of them managed to do so in the allowed time.

The winners from Shanghai, Danielle Goldstein and Lizziemary started the jump-off for these eleven . Again fast and error-free, Goldstein took the lead with a time of 40.86 seconds. A little faster and also without error Bart Bles was with his white horse Gin D . Two rides further, the lead changed again: After Maikel van der Vleuten had been on the slow side with Dana Blue in the Global Champions League a few hours earlier , he attacked with the gray mare in the jump-off of the Global Champions Tour. He undercut the 40 second mark. But even this should not have been the winning ride: While Daniel Deußer showed the slowest zero-error jump-off with Calisto Blue (fifth place in the final result), Martin Fuchs and his 12-year-old Chaplin once again proved their class. After they had already finished second in the individual ranking of the second GCL partial test, their time in this jump-off was unbeatable. With the fastest time in the jump-off, Fuchs secured victory in this main test of the CSI in Madrid.

Hamburg

Flawless in both competitions of the Global Champions League: Margie Goldstein-Engle for the Cannes Stars

For the 12th time, Hamburg hosted a stage of the Global Champions Tour. The German show jumping and dressage derby was the first of two German GCT / GCL tournaments in the 2019 season. As always, it took place on the Ascension weekend , from May 29th to June 2nd, 2019 in Klein Flottbek .

Global Champions League: In the previous year, the announcement of the championship of Hamburg, the main test on Thursday and the first partial test according to the Global Champions League regulations was changed to a jumping competition based on mistakes and time without jump-off. Since this had not met with approval from the audience and the broadcasting NDR television, the program for Thursday was changed again in 2019: The championship of Hamburg in the afternoon was now again announced as a jumping competition with jump-off.

In addition, another test was created in the morning / noon, which now served as the first partial test for the Global Champions League. The result in this test was much more balanced than in the two GCL stages before. Eight teams got four or fewer penalty points, the New York Empire and Miami Celtics teams got penalty point free. The second partial test on Saturday was less successful for Hans-Dieter Dreher (four penalty points) and Scott Brash (eight penalty points) from New York Empire, the team slipped to ninth place. The Miami Celtics received four penalty points in the second test. In the end they were tied with the St Tropez Pirates at the top of the field. But the St Tropez Pirates, represented by Olivier Robert and Pieter Devos, came up with the better time in the second partial test and thus secured victory.

Global Champions Tour: The course for the first round of the Hamburg Grand Prix, built by Frank Rothenberger, also proved to be challenging for the top-class field. While a draughty ride quickly led to obstacle errors, a more flawless ride quickly led to time penalties. Of the 26 riders who finished the course, only six had time penalties. Half of this (three), however, went to riders who otherwise passed the course without any mistakes. Thus, with only four pairs that remained faultless, there was a very small jump-off.

In the jump-off, Peder Fredricson and his 13-year-old gelding had to show All In . But unlike in the championship on Thursday (which they won), which was endowed with 122,000 euros, the couple did not ride at full risk in the jump-off of the Grand Prix. So the leadership of her faultless ride only lasted until the next starter: Daniel Deußer and his 10-year-old gray mare Jasmien v. Bisschop crossed the finish line four seconds faster and he also made no mistakes. While Philipp Weishaupt made two obstacle errors in the jump-off with Che Fantastica , Nayel Nassar attacked Deusser's lead. The Egyptian living in North America, who had won the 5 * Grand Prix of New York-Uniondale and several World Cup competitions six months earlier, finished the jump-off with 13-year-old Lucifer V without any mistakes. He was also significantly faster than Fredricson, but he couldn't come close to the time of the leader. This means that victory in the Hamburg Grand Prix went to Daniel Deußer for the first time.

Cannes

In 2019, Cannes kicked off the GCT / CGL tournaments in France. The Jumping Cannes tournament took place from June 6th to 8th, 2019. The football stadium Stade des Hespérides , located east of the city center and in close proximity to the Boulevard de la Croisette, served as the venue.

Global Champions League: The first partial test of the Global Champions League in Cannes was held on the evening of the tournament Thursday. The partial test delivered a very mixed result: half of the teams got 12 or more penalty points, while six teams got four or less penalty points. The teams New York Empire and Madrid in Motion finished the test without errors.

In the second sub-test on Saturday, the third-best result came from the St Tropez Pirates: After 12 penalty points in the first test, Edwina Tops-Alexander and Pieter Devos had no obstacle errors, Edwina Tops-Alexander only had one time penalty. With now 13 penalty points, they ranked fifth. The strongest team of the season so far, the Shanghai Swans (represented here by Peder Fredricson and Daniel Deußer) had to accept two obstacle errors in the first test. In the second part of the test they did not make any mistakes, which brought them third place. Also with a total of eight penalty points, but with a time about a second faster, the Miami Celtics came in second. Eric van der Vleuten and his son Maikel van der Vleuten won the Global Champions League stage for Madrid in Motion as the only team that did not have a single mistake in Cannes.

Global Champions Tour: The Grand Prix, the GCT stage in Cannes, started late: The first pair started at 9:30 p.m., so the test took place completely under floodlights. The fourth rider, Bassem Mohammed, made it into the jump-off. Nine other riders with their horses were able to qualify for the jump-off thanks to their faultless ride. The jump-off course was based strongly on the course of the normal circuit, only the last obstacles had to be tackled the other way around than in the normal circuit (jump-off course: obstacles 2, 3, 5, 6A, 6B, 15 (previously 10B) and 16 (previously 8, now converted to a steep jump) )).

Bassem Mohammed tried to set a high pace with his 13-year-old Gunder , but after 35.47 seconds he crossed the finish line with two obstacle errors. Things went better for Shane Breen: Six days after his second place in the German Jumping Derby , he and Ipswich van de Wolfsakker were the first clear rider in the jump-off of the GCT stage in Cannes. His lead with a significantly slower time of 38.10 seconds lasted for two rides. He was replaced by Daniel Deußer and his 12-year-old Chacco Blue son Calisto Blue , who needed less than 36 seconds for the jump-off course. While Pieter Devos, up to now second in the GCT overall standings behind Deußer, was also behind Deußer in Cannes with a time of 37.39 seconds (fourth place in the final result), Niels Bruynseels was able to undercut the fastest times so far. With his Belgian mare Gancia de Muze , he needed less than 35 seconds for the course designed by Grégory Bodo. Scott Brash tried as the last starter to attack the time with his 10-year-old gelding Mr President , but he stayed a good second slower and came in second.

Stockholm

In the summer of 2019, the Global Champions Tour also made a stop in Scandinavia for the first time: the Stockholm Horse Week took place on June 13-16, 2019. The venue for the tournament was the Stockholm Olympic Stadium , which was roughly divided into a tournament area and a warm-up area. The tournament program in Stockholm was one of the most extensive of the GCT / GCL tournaments, with international dressage tests for U25 and Grand Prix riders as well as other jumping competitions for Swedish riders and U25 show jumpers.

Global Champions League: The best team in the first round of the GCL premiere in Stockholm was New York Empire (without penalty points). The London Knights followed as the only team with only one time penalty. In the second partial test, Daniel Bluman was the first rider for New York Empire to start the 10-year-old gelding Entano . Their ride together went much worse than hoped, with twelve penalty points the team lost the lead and the connection to the front places. Scott Brash's flawless ride ensured that New York Empire was still sixth. While the Berlin Eagles were able to secure second place in front of the riders from Madrid in Motion with the same penalty points thanks to a fast ride by Malin Baryard-Johnsson, the London Knights succeeded in winning the stage in Stockholm. Without any further mistakes, the team came to only one time penalty.

Global Champions Tour: At the premiere, the GCT special stage in Stockholm was endowed with 340,000 euros. Of the 33 couples who started, ten riders and their horses secured a place in the jump-off. In the jump-off, Jos Verlooy and his gray Caracas already showed a good performance: he only needed 36.82 seconds for the jump-off course without making any mistakes. Leopold van Asten, as the next rider, was also without penalty points, but needed a good half a second longer for the course. It was not until the eighth rider in the jump-off when Frank Schuttert and Lyonel D , a pair of starters, came close to Verlooy's result (without penalty points in 36.90 seconds).

At the end of the jump-off, two Swedes had a chance of victory: First, Malin Baryard-Johnsson, who with her lively mare Indiana was able to beat Jos Verlooy's time by another 1.5 seconds. After her, Peder Fredricson came into the course and attacked with All In . He managed to be faster again, and he took a full risk to the last obstacle. This paid off, all the poles were left behind - Fredricson was the winner of the GCT Grand Prix.

Cascais

Portugal's stage of the Global Champions Tour took place in Cascais , about 25 km west of Lisbon. The venue for the CSI 5 * tournament was the Hipódromo Manuel Possolo. The tournament lasted from June 20-22, 2018, with two exams per day from 6.15 p.m. until late at night.

Global Champions League: In the main test of the first day of the tournament, the first partial test of the GCL, five teams remained without jumping faults: the Monaco Aces, Valkenswaard United, the Paris Panthers, London Knights and the Prague Lions. While the first three teams mentioned were completely free of mistakes, the Prague Lions recorded a time penalty because their rider Wilm Vermeir was exceeded.

In the second partial test two days later, Valkenswaard United, the Paris Panthers and the Monaco Aces each collected four penalty points. Team Madrid in Motion joined this group and received only four penalty points from the first part of the test. So the time needed had to decide, and here the ranking was clear: While Marcus Ehning and Bertram Allen only needed 141.73 seconds for Valkenswaard United, the three other teams in this group achieved times well over 150 seconds. With times as fast as Valkenswaard United and without any mistakes in both stages, the win clearly went to Ben Maher and Martin Fuchs for the London Knights team.

Global Champions Tour: The GCT Grand Prix of Cascais was held on the last day from 9:30 p.m. and therefore under floodlights. With eleven faultless rides in the first lap, there was an extensive starter field in the jump-off. The first participant in the jump-off, Christian Ahlmann, made an obstacle error with Clintrexo Z. But the time it took of 37.54 seconds was, as it turned out, very fast. The first zero-error ride in the jump-off came from Darragh Kenny, he presented the 11-year-old gelding Important de Muze in Cascais . His lead stopped five rides. The new leader was Ben Maher, who was half a second faster than Kenny (but half a second slower than Ahlmann).

Michael Duffy, who rode the Irish stallion Touch the Stars , pushed himself between Maher and Kenny . After Duffy, Marcus Ehning started. As with his compatriot Ahlmann, Ehning also fell a pole, but his time was by far the fastest of the jump-off. With four penalty points in 36.21 seconds, Ehning finished seventh. The last starter was Martin Fuchs. Fuchs was one of the infrequent starters in the Global Champions Tour, but he used his few starts effectively: In the play-off at Cascais he made no mistakes, his time of 37.64 seconds brought him the victory. This means that Martin Fuchs was able to record his second victory at his third GCT Grand Prix start in 2019.

Monaco

On the last weekend in June, from June 27th to 29th, 2019, the city-state of Monaco hosted the Jumping International de Monte Carlo tournament . The tournament, which also included a GCT / GCL stage, was held on a sand court on the banks of the Boulevard Albert 1er at Port Hercule , which was raised for the event .

Global Champions League: After the first partial test of the GCL in Monaco, the Scandinavian Vikings had worked out a comfortable lead. As the only team, they remained without mistakes. Only the Monaco Aces stayed within striking distance with four penalty points on their “home stage”. All other teams received six or more penalty points.

In the second lap, Julien Epaillard of the Monaco Aces made an obstacle error, but they were able to hold onto second place. After Evelina Tovek had again made no mistakes for the Scandinavian Vikings, her team mate was able to compete without great pressure: Geir Gulliksen allowed herself a time penalty with the 13-year-old gelding Quatro . The Scandinavian Vikings won with seven penalty points in Monaco.

Global Champions Tour: The normal round of the GCT special stage of Monaco, the Grand Prix of the Prince of Monaco, recorded a very mixed result: after a faultless ride, ten riders had the opportunity to compete in the jump-off. On the other hand, eight of the 35 starters got over 15 penalty points or decided not to end the course prematurely. Last year's winning pair , Shane Breen and Ipswich van de Wolfsakker , were the only ones to miss the jump-off with just one time penalty.

Paul Estermann kicked off the jump-off, but crossed the finish line with 13-year-old Lord Pepsi with a jumping fault. Julien Epaillard was different: as the second starter, he finished the jump- off course with Usual Suspect d'Auge without a mistake - and this at a time that was hard to beat. While Olivier Robert and Wilm Vermeir each made mistakes, the next two starters deliberately opted for a slow lap, which both did not make any mistakes: Lucia Le Jeune Vizzini came in sixth with Filou de Muze , Christian Kukuk was the only German Starter crossed the finish line a little faster with Limonchello and finished the test in fifth place.

The 2014 Grand Prix winner Bassem Mohammed had a good chance of winning again in Monaco. With Gunder he was four tenths of a second faster than Epaillard and took the lead for the time being. But this hope only lasted one ride: Maikel van der Vleuten, who rode the 9-year-old Beauville Z in Monaco, crossed the finish line a fraction of a second faster and with no mistakes. Henrik von Eckermann and Kevin Staut couldn't change anything about this lead, Maikel van der Vleuten won the Grand Prix.

Paris

The Paris Eiffel Jumping tournament was held from July 5th to 7th, 2019 . It took place in the center of Paris. The tournament site was located on the Marsfeld in front of the École militaire and thus within sight of the Eiffel Tower.

Global Champions League: In Paris, three teams made no mistakes in the first partial test: The St Tropez Pirates, the Miami Celtics and the Prague Lions team. The riders of the Prague Lions, Marc Houtzager and Niels Bruynseels, collected five penalty points in the second test and thus came fourth. In front of them, with only five penalty points from the first test and significantly faster times, the Shanghai Swans, represented again in the second test by Daniel Deußer and Peder Fredricson. Edwina Tops-Alexander, for whom the GCL / CGT season still did not go as desired, made a jumping fault with Veronese Teamjoy . Nevertheless, it was enough for the St Tropez Pirates with only these four penalty points for second place. Jessica Springsteen and Shane Breen started for the Miami Celtics before the St Tropez Pirates. They laid their laps in the second part of the test at a slower pace. Although both received one time penalty point, they won the GCL stage in Paris with a total of only two penalty points.

Global Champions Tour: The time allowed in the normal circuit of the GCT Grand Prix of Paris was extremely tight, initially a time of 70 seconds was specified. After three rides, the time allowed was increased to 72 seconds. Even if his time of 73.03 seconds remained with a time penalty, Emil Hallundbæk's joy was justified: When the second rider started, his result stayed in the lead until the 15th ride. It was only shortly before half of the starting field that it was Marc Houtzager who made no mistakes with his 12-year-old gelding Calimero . This seemed to have "broken the knot", three starter pairs in a row remained free of penalty points. There were a total of seven clear rounds.

Marc Houtzager and also the second starter, Shane Breen, made obstacle errors in the jump-off. These were the last mistakes in this jump-off. The 24-year-old Dutch rider Kim Emmen had the fastest time of all zero-error rides in the normal course with the large-framed stallion Delvaux (68.94 seconds). The jump-off course with tighter turns was less forgiving of her horse, but she was still clear in 39.84 seconds. Celine Schoonbroodt-de Azevedo was three seconds clear with Cheppetta . Two French participants were among the last three starters. Pénélope Leprevost brought the 9-year-old stallion Excalibur de la Tour Vidal to the start, who won his first Grand Prix here over 1.60 meters. Adjusted to this, it also required a time of over 39 seconds. Christian Ahlmann rode his Taloubet Z Son Take a chance on me Z . He succeeded in the go-off almost perfectly, after 35.60 seconds he crossed the finish line. The last French chance was the last rider Kevin Staut. But even he did not fully attack with his 10-year-old gelding and ended up in third place.

Chantilly

On the weekend after the Paris stage, the next stop of the two tournament series was just 50 kilometers further north. On the grounds of race track on the edge of the castle of Chantilly was the CSI 5 * tournament of Chantilly aligned. The tournament kicked off on July 11, 2019, the last day of the tournament was July 14, 2019.

Global Champions League: On Friday the tournament was the first part of the GCL test. In this two teams remained without mistakes, the Berlin Eagles and the Miami Celtics. The second partial test on Saturday, however, was unhappy for the Miami Celtics: William Whitaker's horse Cadeau de Muze refused the penultimate obstacle. Supplemented by the resulting time penalty points, the team received a total of seven penalty points. It fell back to fourth place.

Valkenswaard United came in second, thanks to quick rides by Marcus Ehning and Bertram Allen, the team got four penalty points in 136.64 seconds. The London Knights got the same penalty point result (also only penalty points from the first round). But the times of Ben Maher and especially Emily Moffitt were slower, so that the team came in together with 146.87 seconds and thus in third place. The victory with four faultless rides went to Ludger Beerbaum and his employed rider Christian Kukuk from the Berlin Eagles.

Global Champions Tour: The Chantilly tournament area is a large grass pitch. The course of the normal circuit of the Grand Prix was designed accordingly with long, mostly curved lines and few turns. The time allowed was chosen generously, but the number of error-free rides remained manageable. Six riders entered the jump-off with their horses.

Darragh Kenny had to show in the jump-off. With his 13-year-old stallion Balou du Reventon he managed a very fast lap straight away , after 37.54 seconds he crossed the finish line without any mistakes. With the exception of Christophe Vanderhasselt, all riders made it without mistakes in the jump-off. But no one managed to beat Kenny's time. Pénélope Leprevost came closest as the last starter, but she too was over half a second slower.

Berlin

The German capital Berlin was the location of a stage of the GCT / GCL for the third time. This took place on the weekend after the CHIO Aachen , from July 26th to 28th, 2019. The venue for the Global Jumping Berlin tournament was the summer garden of the Berlin exhibition center .

Global Champions League: The decision in the Global Champions League in Berlin was quite open from the start. After the first partial test, two teams (Berlin Eagles and London Knights) were in the lead with no mistakes. Up to 13th place of the 16 teams, all teams had eight or fewer penalty points.

The second part of the test was more demanding and messed up the ranking accordingly. Only the Hamburg Giants made no mistakes in the second test. With the addition of the four penalty points from the first round, this was enough for victory. The decision for second place was exciting: five teams got eight penalty points from both laps. So time had to decide. Benefiting from the fast time of Ludger Beerbaum and his gelding Casello (winner in the individual classification of the second partial test), the Berlin Eagles were able to secure second place with a time of 129.35 seconds. Just 0.12 seconds slower, Danielle Goldstein Waldman and Pieter Devos came third for the St Tropez Pirates. The London Knights, represented in Berlin by the Philippaerts twins and Martin Fuchs (fourth place), were another 0.13 seconds slower.

Global Champions Tour: The narrow dimensions of the cut oval of the summer garden meant that the requirements in the Grand Prix were more like those of an indoor test. The allowed time of 71 seconds in the normal circuit turned out to be the decisive criterion: Nine of the 30 participants who completed the circuit had time errors. Bassem Mohammed and Bart Bles only missed out on the jump-off due to their time error.

Six riders were allowed to start in the jump-off. It all started with Harry Charles, who had celebrated his 20th birthday a few days earlier. He got eight penalty points with Borsato - and shouldn't have been the only rider with mistakes in this clear jump-off. Christian Ahlmann made a jumping fault in the jump-off, but he was quick with a time of 38.56 seconds. Nicola Philippaerts (eight penalty points) and Frank Schuttert (four penalty points) also crossed the finish line with mistakes and slower than Ahlmann.

Danielle Goldstein Waldman, the penultimate starter, chose a lower basic pace for the course and crossed the finish line in 39.46 seconds. But she was the first to stay clear and took the lead. Ludger Beerbaum as the last rider also tried to take the lead, but in the end did not quite match Goldstein Waldman's time. This marked the Israeli woman's first major individual success since her wedding as well as the second GCT victory this season.

London

For the third time, the British stage took place in the London district of Chelsea . The CSI 5 * tournament was held in the gardens of the Royal Hospital Chelsea on the left bank of the Thames from August 2-4, 2019.

Global Champions League: The London Knights were the only team to complete both stages of the London Global Champions League stage flawlessly. The decision about second place was narrower: three teams finished with four penalty points each. But between these three teams, the time required for the second lap brought a clear decision: Marcus Ehning and Bertram Allen had been very quick on the course with their horses. With a total of just 132.26 seconds, Valkenswaard United clearly secured second place. New York Empire followed, almost six seconds behind, in third place, the St Tropez Pirates were almost three seconds slower.

Julien Epaillard was the first rider to set the jump-off at a brisk pace (time required: 38.80 seconds), but he and his chestnut gelding Usual Suspect d'Auge made an obstacle error . Shane Sweetnam is different: With his gray Alejandro he finished the jump-off course without any mistakes and on top of that, well over a second faster than Epaillard. The attempt to undercut this fast time led to several mistakes, only four rides without penalty points remained in the jump-off. Ben Maher, who had already finished second twice this GCT season, started the jump-off as the ninth starter and won’t take away: With his successful horse Explosion W , he made no mistake, in under 36 seconds he made it Target.

Valkenswaard

In the Netherlands, both tournament series stop in Valkenswaard , the hometown of the series founder Jan Tops. The tournament took place in the modern Tops International Arena from August 9th to 11th, 2019.

Global Champions League: Six teams completed the first partial test on the Friday of the tournament without errors. Accordingly, it was important for these teams not only to remain error-free again in the second partial test, but also to be fast. Ultimately, two teams managed to master the jumping course again without any mistake. Both Edwina Tops-Alexander and Pieter Devos from the St Tropez Pirates and Georgina Bloomberg from the New York Empire team needed average times of around 74 seconds for the course. Since only the Cannes Stars, which were not very successful in the second partial test, started after him, Daniel Bluman was able to secure victory for New York Empire with his ride. He succeeded: with his 11-year-old gelding Ladriano Z , he crossed the finish line in less than 70 seconds. With no penalty points, his team had a total time of 144.22 seconds. This was four and a half seconds less than that of the St Tropez Pirates.

Olivier Philippaerts started the jump-off with his gray mare Legend of Love . It was a quick start: he crossed the finish line after 37.34 seconds without any mistakes. The second gray mare also stayed in the jump-off faster and without any mistakes: Dana Blue and her rider Maikel van der Vleuten, the fourth pair of the jump-off, needed less than 37 seconds for the jumping course. Kevin Staut, as the penultimate starter, almost came close to Philippaerts' time. But the lead remained with Maikel van der Vleuten, so that, as in the previous year, there was a Dutch victory in the main test of the 5 * -CSI from Valkenswaard.

Rome

The third to last stage of the tournament series was held two weeks after the European Championships . The CSI 5 * took place in the Italian capital Rome from September 6th to 8th, 2019. The venue was the Stadio dei Marmi , which is located in the north of the city between the Olympic Stadium and the Milvian Bridge.

Global Champions League: Although a third of the participants in the first partial test of the GCL in Rome made no mistakes, only a few teams were able to record clear rounds of their two riders. Only the Hamburg Giants, the St Tropez Pirates and Madrid in Motion managed to do this. Then there was the Prague Lions team, who had to accept a time error from Gerco Schröder's ride.

One day later in the second part of the test, only five of the teams' 30 starter pairs were able to make no mistakes. The consequence of this was that none of the teams could finish the GCL stage without a mistake or even with four penalty points. The victory went to the Prague Lions, whose penalty point account increased due to a jumping error by Marco Kutscher. But Gerco Schröder, who now competed with the 11-year-old gelding Davino Q , made no mistakes here.

Global Champions Tour: In Rome, too, the allowed time played a subordinate role in the normal round of the GCT Grand Prix. The jumping course that Uliano Vezzani had set up here, however, was appropriate for a high-class starting field. While 17 of 35 starters got a result of four penalty points or less, the starting field for the jump-off was very clear. Only four pairs of participants managed to remain error-free in the normal course.

The first starter in the jump-off was Marlon Módolo Zanotelli. The Brazilian, who previously in just one month Pan American Games had won two gold medals, was here with the chestnut gelding Edgar M at the start. He crossed the finish line after 39.20 seconds without any mistakes. Ben Maher as the next starter was able to confirm his form from the European Championships, his silver medal partner Explosion W carried him over the course in Rome without any mistakes and took the lead with a better time.

Ludger Beerbaum also made no mistakes, with the 11-year-old Cool Feeling he placed third. In the end, Luca Marziani was followed by an Italian hope for victory. But Marziani made three obstacle errors with Tokyo du Soleil , so that he slowed down towards the end of the course and finished the test in fourth place. Ben Maher defended his last year's victory in Rome, but unlike last year, he was not yet the overall winner of the GCT.

Saint Tropez

The area around Saint-Tropez, in which so far only one major CSI has been held, became one of the largest tournament locations in international show jumping in France in 2019. At the L'écurie du Golfe de Saint Tropez equestrian center in Grimaud , a good 10 kilometers west of Saint-Tropez, nine CSI 4 * tournaments were held throughout the year, including one on the date of the Athina Onassis Horse Show at the end of May / At the beginning of June.

The Athina Onassis Horse Show remained GCT / GCL stage, only changed dates and was held from September 12th to 14th in 2019. This year, the venue was again an area a good 200 meters from the beach in the south of Plage de Pampelonne , which already belongs to the municipality of Ramatuelle .

Global Champions League: The first GCL partial test, which was held on the afternoon of the tournament Thursday, turned out to be challenging for the teams. No team was without mistakes. After this first test, Valkenswaard United and St Tropez Pirates, the team around tournament president Athina Onassis (who did not start), were in the lead with four penalty points each.

With eight penalty points each, the two leading teams from the first partial test fell back to third and fifth in the second test. The Shanghai Swans made a significant leap forward from seventh to second, as Peder Fredricson and Daniel Deußer both made no mistakes. With nine penalty points, they were three penalty points behind Madrid in Motion, which won the Saint-Tropez stage. Father and son Eric and Maikel van der Vleuten were in third place after the first part of the test. In the second part of the test, they enabled their team to jump to the top with no penalty points.

Global Champions Tour: The normal circuit of the GCT stage in Saint-Tropez turned out to be too easy for the performance level of the starting field. 25 of the 35 participants had a maximum of one obstacle error, and the allowed time of 81 seconds provoked (almost) no time errors. As a result, the jump-off included 14 riders with their horses.

In the knowledge that only a really fast, faultless lap in such a large jump-off would bring a top position, Pieter Devos was the first rider to take part in the jump-off. With his 11-year-old mare Claire Z , he was able to implement this requirement ideally, and already crossed the finish line after 36.40 seconds. This performance should mean guided tours for him up to and including the 13th ride. Simon Delestre was the closest to Devos, but he too was almost half a second short of taking the lead.

The 14th starter was Jessica Springsteen. With her Holstein mare Zecilie , she finally managed to reach the finish line more than a second faster than Pieter Devos and to make no mistakes. While the next two riders, Maurice Tebbel and Marco Kutscher, each got a jumping fault, only Kent Farrington could undo Springsteen's victory. Farrington, who competed with the mare Austria , was just as quick in the jump-off as expected. But on the last jump he tore a bar, with a time of 35.88 seconds he found himself in ninth place. For the 27-year-old Jessica Springsteen, this victory in a CSI 5 * Grand Prix was probably the biggest single success of her career so far.

New York City

New York City was the new venue for the GCT season finale . The tournament, which was held for the first time, took place from September 27 to 29, 2019 on the former barracks island of Governors Island , which can only be reached by ferry . A makeshift riding stadium was built there with a view of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline .

Global Champions League: After the first of the two GCL exams in New York, the outcome of the exam was still quite open. Two teams, the London Knights and Valkenswaard United, were able to record a completely penalty-free result. Four other teams had received four penalty points. The first stage went unhappy for the Shanghai Swans, who were only two points behind New York in second place in the overall standings. While Daniel Deußer had made no mistakes , Peder Fredricson fell after a refusal of his gelding Zacramento . The team was eliminated and remained in New York without any rating points.

St Tropez Pirates, leading in the overall standings ahead of New York, made an obstacle error in both the first test and the second. This brought the team to fourth place in New York. Three teams finished better, all three made no mistakes in the second part of the test. The Prague Lions (represented by Niels Bruynseels, Marc Houtzager and Marco Kutscher) came third with eight penalty points, but a better time. Also eight penalty points, but again just a little faster, Paris Panthers were in second place. With this good result, they managed to make it into the top ten of the overall GCL ranking. Victory went to Martin Fuchs and Ben Maher for the London Knights team. As the only duo with no mistakes at all, this victory also earned them first place in the overall GCL standings.

Global Champions Tour: Several decisions that were important for the overall GCT standings were made in the normal course of the New York City stage. So far third-placed Daniel Deußer missed the jump-off with an obstacle error, which ruined his (anyway rather theoretical) chances of overall victory. The previous leader, Pieter Devos, made it into the jump-off. The fact that Ben Maher was already the overall winner of the GCT in 2019 before the jump-off started was related to the rules of the overall ranking. Both riders had already collected evaluation points in more than nine stages (only the best nine results were included in the evaluation). Therefore, it was not only the scoring points that were added in New York that decided, the rider's scoring points to be canceled in return also had an impact. Maher was able to delete 16 rating points from Paris, while 25 rating points from Berlin had to be deleted for Devos. Therefore, with Ben Maher's jump-off qualification, it was ensured that Maher would have more points in the overall ranking at the end of the test.

Seven rider-horse pairs entered the jump-off. Alberto Zorzi's ride with the black Ulane de Coquerie was already a very quick, flawless start to the jump-off. Marcus Ehning followed directly after him, with the gray stallion Cornado NRW he was half a second faster than Zorzi without any mistakes. The jump-off was unlucky for Pieter Devos, he made a jumping fault with his mare Claire Z and a refusal within the double combination. Malin Baryard-Johnsson and Marc Houtzager made no mistakes with their horses, but their time was slower than that of Zorzi. It was already clear that Marcus Ehning would get the last place on the grid at the GCT-Super Grand Prix, as the two riders who followed had already won one through victories in the course of the season.

Ben Maher was able to fully attack with the certainty of the GCT overall victory in the jump-off. Once again, he not only stayed flawless with Explosion W , but also finished the course in a significantly faster time than his competitors. After him, only Martin Fuchs competed. Fuchs also attacked and made no mistakes, but unlike at the European Championships, Maher was at the front in New York. Ben Maher and his Dutch gelding achieved three victories in a row in the last three GCT stages in 2019, where they competed together.

Overall ratings

Global Champions Tour

The overall ranking decided the overall victory of the Global Champions Tour. Based on this ranking list, bonus prize money was awarded to the most successful riders on the Global Champions Tour at the end of the season. For the second year in a row, Ben Maher won the GCT overall. Unlike in 2018, however, the victory was not without risk. Pieter Devos also had promising chances of overall victory, but Mahers final sprint with three wins in the last five stages brought the decision.

Prague playoffs

For the second time the GCT / GCL season was closed by a playoff tournament. However, this took place a good month earlier than last year: The Prague Playoffs were held from November 21 to 24, 2019 in the O 2 Arena in the Czech capital Prague .

The event hosted two competitions, the Global Champions League Playoffs and the Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix.

Global Champions Tour Super Grand Prix

The Super Grand Prix is not part of the regular Global Champions Tour season and therefore has no effect on the overall ranking. The starting field for the test consists of 18 riders. The winner of each special stage of the Global Champions Tour qualified for this. If a rider had already qualified at an earlier GCT stage, the best placed rider who was not yet eligible to start for the Super Grand Prix moved up.

Thus, the following riders are qualified for the Super Grand Prix:

It was a jumping competition with two different rounds . The exam began on November 23, 2019 at 8 p.m. The third starter, Julien Epaillard, with the 10-year-old virtuoso Champeix achieved the first fault-free ride in the first lap . This succeeded after him also Ben Maher, Daniel Deußer and Danielle Goldstein Waldman. Ludger Beerbaum as the last starter also seemed to have few problems with the course, but he lost the reins on the final line. As a result, he did not start the final jump, but turned away beforehand (which counted as a refusal). With his gelding Cool Feeling he got 12 penalty points including the resulting time penalties. He subsequently decided not to start the second lap. Jessica Springsteen, who had struggled with the course and had collected 16 penalty points with her mare Zecilie, also did without .

In the second round of the elaborately staged jumping competition, 16 riders competed, who so far had a result of nine penalty points or better. While Shane Sweetnam collected three mistakes in the second lap, Christian Ahlmann was able to work his way forward as the second rider with only one time penalty in this lap. He finished the test with his stallion Take A Chance On Me Z in tenth place.

Marcus Ehning and Martin Fuchs also put themselves in a very good starting position. Of the five riders with four penalty points in the first round, only these two got through the second round without errors. Darragh Kenny was one of only two participants in the first lap to receive a time penalty, but otherwise he made it through the course without any mistakes. Because of this starting position, he deliberately approached the second round with his stallion Balou du Reventon . He managed to repeat his result from the first lap and thus placed himself ahead of Martin Fuchs in the ranking.

Danielle Goldstein Waldman started the four riders who have so far remained flawless. After she was happily without mistakes in the first lap, she collected nine penalty points in the second lap. Daniel Deußer and Marlon Modolo Zanotelli also did not finish without mistakes (four penalty points each). So Ben Maher did not have to ride fast, he and Explosion W were enough for a faultless ride. Unlike the European Championships , he succeeded in doing this in Prague, so his victory was certain. The prize money was 1.25 million euros, 300,000 euros of which went to Maher.

Super Cup (Global Champions League Playoffs)

After the end of the Global Champions League 2019, their play-offs will take place. The overall ranking of the 2019 season serves as a qualification criterion. As the number of teams had decreased to 16 this season, all teams were eligible to start.

The first test of the so-called Super Cup was the quarter-finals on Thursday (November 21). The teams placed fifth to 16th in the 2019 overall ranking started there. Eight teams qualified for the semi-finals from this test. In the semifinals on Friday of the tournament, they also met the four best teams in the 2019 overall standings, which were directly qualified for the semifinals.

In the final on the last day of the tournament, the six best teams from the semi-finals will start again. There the winner of the Super Cup will be determined. In contrast to the normal Global Champions League stages, not two but three riders per team compete in all final stages. There is no deletion result.

Quarter finals

A result of 12 penalty points in the quarter-finals was sufficient to get into the top eight teams and thus to reach the semi-finals. The Berlin Eagles clearly missed the next stage. After Malin Baryard-Johnsson failed to make a mistake, Christian Kukuk and Philipp Weishaupt collected 16 and 13 penalty points respectively. The quarter-finals were endowed with 1,200,000 euros in prize money, which was distributed evenly to all 12 participating teams.

Semifinals

For the two best-placed teams in the overall standings, the playoffs were over after just one test. The London Knights came in eighth with 12 penalty points, the St Tropez Pirates even ended up in last place. With eight penalty points and 205.52 seconds, the host team of the Prague Lions was a second too slow to reach the finals and came in seventh. The quarterfinals winners, Miami Celtics, missed entry to the finals due to 12 penalty points from Jessica Springsteen.

In the semifinals, too, the prize money was divided equally among the twelve teams that had started; in this test, 2,400,000 euros were paid out.

final

As in the previous year, the final competition of the Global Champions League Playoffs was the most highly endowed jumping competition in the world. A total of 6.4 million euros was paid out in this one test, of which over 2.7 million euros went to the winning team.

The final test was a jumping competition with two different rounds . After the first round, the Cannes Stars were in the lead with only one time penalty. The Paris Panthers and Shanghai Swans followed in second place with four penalty points each.

This intermediate result was swirled again vigorously in the second round. With 25 penalty points, the Cannes Stars were the losers of this round. The same applied to the Paris Panthers, who also fell back significantly by 24 penalty points. The Shanghai Swans, on the other hand, were able to play to their team strength, which has been proven time and again throughout the season. Only Pius Schwizer made two obstacle errors, his two team-mates, on the other hand, made no mistakes. Daniel Deußer and his gray mare Jasmien vd Bisschop were one of only two pairs of participants who did not make any mistakes in both rounds. With a margin of nine penalty points over the runner-up Monaco Aces, victory clearly went to the Shanghai Swans.
