The Global Champions Tour 2017 was the twelfth season of the Global Champions Tour , an international tournament series. It is considered one of the most important series in show jumping . For the second time, another test series, the Global Champions League 2017 team competition , was held parallel to the Global Champions Tour . Both series were FEI recognized tournament series in 2017 .

Name sponsor and timepiece of the Global Champions Tour (GCT) was also Longines in 2017 , so it was named Longines Global Champions Tour 2017 .

Course of the tournament series

For the 2017 season, new tournament locations were added: In Berlin, an internationally advertised horse show was held for the first time since 2003, and London returned to the Global Champions Tour calendar after a one-year break. As the number of 15 stages was retained, two stages no longer appear in the GCT / GCL calendar: In Vienna, the organizers were unable to find a venue in the direct center. The tournament Jumping Antwerp, which was supplemented by a GCT evaluation test in 2014, took place in 2017 as a CSI 5 * tournament outside of the tournament series.

All tournaments were  advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping.

Global Champions League

The Global Champions League is a series of tests for teams in which two riders from a team (usually five riders) compete as one team. The teams (with the exception of one Qatari team) are composed independently of their nationalities, the nationalities take a back seat and are not included in the result lists.

In the 2017 season, the special stages of the Global Champions League (GCL) were held before the stage of the Global Champions Tour. Each GCL stage consisted of two tests: The first partial test on Thursday or Friday was a jumping competition with jump-offs with a height of up to 1.55 meters, of which only the normal round was included in the team ranking.

The second partial test took place on the Saturday before the Global Champions Tour test and replaced the previous first round of this test. So it was a jumping competition according to mistakes and time (one round) , obstacle height up to 1.60 meters. The starting order of the teams was based on their result in the first partial test. The team result resulted from the addition of the penalty points of the two team riders of both partial tests, in the case of a penalty point tie the addition of the times of the second round decided. In addition to the prize money for both exams, each GCL stage was endowed with 200,000 euros.

In the 2017 season, 18 teams competed in the GCL, the regulations limit the number of teams to a maximum of 20. The teams included the following riders:

Global Champions Tour

Following the second stage of the Global Champions League, the special stages of the Global Champions Tour were held on Saturday afternoon or evening. The special stages only consisted of one normal lap and one jump-off , the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters.

The 25 best riders of the previously held second test of the Global Champions League were qualified for the GCT evaluation test. The endowment for the evaluation test was at least 300,000 in each case .

media

Eurosport was media partner of the Global Champions Tour for another year . The GCT exams were transferred to Eurosport 1 . The broadcasts took place live or with a time delay. The GCT and GCL-stages and many other tests of GCT tournaments were on the websites of the two tournament series via live stream transmitted.

The stages

1st stage: Mexico City

The GCT / GCL season in Mexico started on the weekend after the World Cup final in Omaha . From April 6th to 9th, 2017, the highest-altitude tournament of this series of tournaments (approx. 2300 meters above sea level) was held on the Campo Marte , a large grass pitch in Mexico City .

Global Champions League: In the 2017 season, the Global Champions League rating consists of two tests, each with one round, held on two different days. Already after the first partial test a duel was on the horizon: The newly formed GCL winning team from the previous year, Team Valkenswaard United, was in the lead without any mistakes, the new Team St. Tropez Pirates followed with a time penalty. All other teams had already received eight or more penalty points.

In the second partial test, which also counted as a qualification test for the Global Champions Tour, the two leading teams started without changing the riders and horses. Alberto Zorzi made an obstacle error for Valkenswaard United, while St. Tropez Pirates took the lead with a clear round from Simon Delestre. As the penultimate rider, Jérôme Guery incurred eight penalty points for the St. Tropez Pirates. So the decision about the victory lay with Bertram Allen. Allen got four penalty points with his gray stallion Hector van d'Abdijhoeve , but this was enough to secure victory for Valkenswaard United.

Global Champions Tour: In Mexico City, a Global Champions Tour stage was carried out for the first time according to the new mode, in which only the best 25 riders of a qualifying test take part in the GCT special test. The starting order was also based on the result of the qualification test (the winner being the last starter).

More than half of the 25 starters (14 riders) got a result of four or less penalty points, Paris Sellon and Marco Kutscher missed the jump-off due to a time penalty. The jump-off course took up the sequence of obstacles of the normal course again: sequence of obstacles 4a - 5 - 6 - 7a - 7b - 9 - 10, as the final jump an oxer was set up as a new obstacle 16. Due to the elimination of obstacle 8, obstacle 9 had to be ridden from a 270-degree turn around the jump, a turn that would be decisive for the course of the jump-off.

After Bertram Allen and Daniel Deußer were the first riders to receive four penalty points each, it was Deusser's stable colleague Lorenzo de Luca who showed a slow but error-free lap with Armitages Boy and thus took the lead. Niels Bruynseels was already significantly faster, but made a bigger arc at the turn to obstacle 9. Maikel van der Vleuten tried to take this turn much closer with Arera C , but lost some of the flow in his ride and thus reached the finish line about half a second behind Bruynseels. Martin Fuchs, who had already finished second in the qualification test with a quick time, competed here with the only 10-year-old stallion Chaplin . He succeeded in overcoming the jump-off course, including the turn to obstacle 9, smoothly and without mistakes, which clearly earned him the fastest time in the jump-off and thus victory.

2nd stage: Miami Beach

A weekend after Mexico, the second North American stage was on the program. For the third time, a GCT tournament was held in a makeshift riding arena on the beach in Miami Beach. The tournament took place from April 13th to 15th, 2017.

Global Champions League: In the first GCL competition on the first day of the tournament, Bertram Allen and Alberto Zorzi stayed clear for Valkenswaard United. Both riders of the Doha Fursan Qatar team ( Ali bin Chalid Al Thani and Bassem Hassan Mohammed ) each received a time penalty and were therefore in second place in the interim result. In the second test, Doha Fursan Qatar slipped to fourth place with 12 more penalty points. Valkenswaard United missed their second win of the season as Bertram Allen and his gray stallion Hector van d'Abdijhoeve suffered eight penalty points. Like the London Knights, Valkenswaard United had a total of eight penalty points. However, since the London Knights team, made up of Ben Maher and Kent Farrington, brought the faster times to the finish in the second stage, they clinched the victory in this GCL stage.

Global Champions Tour: No German riders could qualify for the Global Champions Tour stage in Miami. From Austria, Max Kühner started with Electric Touch (eight penalty points in normal circulation, 12th place), for Switzerland Martin Fuchs with Chaplin (also eight penalty points in normal circulation , 11th place) and Jane Richard Philips with Dieudonne de Guldenboom (four penalty points , 7th place).

The jump-off remained clear with four riders. Nicola Philippaerts made no mistakes with Chilli Willi , Alberto Zorzi as the second rider replaced Philippaerts directly on the top spot. The jump-off was unlucky for Harrie Smolders : his stallion Emerald buckled his forehand shortly after the second obstacle. Both could intercept and avoid a fall, but the next obstacle could no longer be ridden properly. The new riding brought four penalty points, which were added four time penalty points. Jérôme Guery was the last rider in the jump-off, with Grand Cru van de Rozenberg he was even faster than Zorzi, and without mistakes he secured victory in the GCT Grand Prix of Miami.

3rd stage: Shanghai

At the end of April 2017 the Chinese stage of the GCT / GCL was carried out. The tournament was held from April 28th to 30th, 2017 in the immediate vicinity of the China Art Museum (China Art Palace) in Shanghai .

Global Champions League: After the first GCL test in Shanghai, three of the 18 teams were tied without errors. While the St Tropez Pirates dropped to eighth place due to a 16-point ride by Simon Delestre and Chesall , the decision was made between the Paris Panthers and Hamburg Diamonds teams. Both teams remained without errors in the second test. The Paris Panthers were already able to pull away with their first rider, Jack Towell (who started the 11-year-old Lucifer V in this test ) was over three seconds faster than John Whitaker for the Hamburg Diamonds. Darragh Kenny, the second rider of the Paris Panthers, was also quick and flawless on the course, so that the team won the Global Champions League in Shanghai due to the better times in the second test.

In the jump-off, Bassem Hassan Mohammed got eight penalty points with Gunder and thus came in fifth. The other four riders and their horses all failed again. The gaps between the times of the three fastest riders in the jump-off were extremely close: Last year's winner couple Marcus Ehning and Pret A Tout finished with 45.68 seconds. While Maikel van der Vleuten could not take the lead with Verdi , Kent Farrington did. The American won with the 11-year-old mare Gazelle with a time of 45.18 seconds.

For the tenth time, a stage of the Global Champions Tour was held as part of the German Show Jumping and Dressage Derby . As every year, the tournament took place on the Ascension weekend , from May 24th to 28th, 2017, in Hamburg - Klein Flottbek .

Global Champions League: The Global Champions League competitions at the German Jumping and Dressage Derby were the Hamburg Championships on Thursday (May 25) and a pre-Grand Prix competition on Saturday afternoon. Two teams finished the first round of the Hamburg championship with a clean slate : Chantilly Pegasus, represented by Martin Fuchs with Clooney and Lauren Hough with Ohlala and Miami Glory. Third place went to the Qatari team Doha Fursan Qatar, whose riders Ali bin Chalid Al Thani and Bassem Hassan Mohammed each exceeded the allowed time of 80 seconds and received a time penalty.

These three teams are also the top three in the overall result of the Hamburg GCT stage. While Chantilly Pegasus and Doha Fursan Qatar each got four penalty points in the second team test on Saturday, the victory went to Miami Glory. His team riders Denis Lynch and Scott Brash also made no mistakes in this second test.

Global Champions Tour: The special stage of the Global Champions Tour was the Grand Prix in Hamburg on Saturday afternoon. In the normal round of this test, 13 of the 25 participants got a result of four or less penalty points, five made it into the jump-off.

The jump-off was characterized by constant changes in leadership: the tournament had already been successful for 23-year-old Laura Klaphake , including ninth in the Hamburg championship. She opened the jump-off with the 9-year-old mare Catch me if you can , but received four penalty points. Christian Ahlmann and the 13-year-old stallion Epleaser van't Heike brought the first clear round of the jump-off to the finish. Harrie Smolders with his equally 13-year-old stallion Don were a bit faster and without mistakes, while Yuri Mansur with Babylotte had to accept four penalty points.

Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Casall were the last couple to start in the jump-off. The 18-year-old Holstein Verband stallion Casall was supposed to be retired from the sport after this test, so this was his last round in the show jumping course. Both played out their years of experience and not only remained flawless, but were also over two seconds faster than Smolders. Casall said goodbye by winning the Hamburg Grand Prix.

6th stage: Cannes

The Jumping Cannes tournament was held in Cannes from June 8th to 10th, 2017 . The venue was the Stade des Hespérides football stadium , which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Boulevard de la Croisette.

Global Champions League: The first partial test of the Global Champions League in Cannes was demanding, only four of the 32 riders of the teams finished the course without mistakes. The teams also collected a number of penalty points in the second sub-test: of the 15 teams still at the start, nine teams received 12 or more penalty points. The three teams that were in the lead with eight penalty points after the first sub-test (St Tropez Pirates, Doha Fursan Qatar and the London Knights) lost their top position in the second sub-test and found themselves between fifth and tenth place in the final result. The riders from Valkenswaard United, who placed fifth in the first part of the test, made no mistakes in the second part of the test on Saturday and thus took the victory. The Shanghai Swans, who placed second in the final result, made full use of the opportunity to swap horses and riders: three riders with four horses competed for the team in the special stages in Cannes.

Global Champions Tour: The last test of the tournament, which ended on Saturday, was the GCT special test from 10 p.m. There was a high number of clear rounds in the first round, ten of the 25 starters with their horses made no mistakes. In the jump-off, half of the ten riders were again clear. Eric van der Vleuten came with Wunschkind , a chestnut mare he had been riding for six months, at a rather restrained pace in fifth place (43.84 seconds). The decision to win was made with significantly faster rides: Alberto Zorzi and Going Global , who are already part of the winning team in the Global Champions League, came fourth here. Daniel Deußer and Simon Delestre were also quick and error-free with their horses, but the victory went to Sergio Álvarez Moya. With the 12-year-old gelding Arrayan , he was the only rider to stay under 36 seconds in the jump-off.

7th stage: Monaco

Two weeks after Cannes, another stage of the GCT / GCL took place on the Côte d'Azur: The Jumping International de Monte Carlo tournament was held from June 23rd to June 25th 2017 on a provisional clay court on the banks of the Boulevard Albert 1er at Port Hercule in Monaco .

Global Champions League : The number of faultless rides in the first partial test of the Global Champions League in Monaco was quite high, four teams were in the lead after this partial test without penalty points. But no team could keep this result. The Vienna Eagles managed to do this best, whose two Belgian riders achieved an overall result of only one time penalty from two partial tests. The Shanghai Swans and the Mexico Amigos each received four penalty points in addition to their flawless intermediate results. Benefiting from Roger-Yves Bost's fast lap in the second partial test (which also brought him victory in the individual classification of the test), the Shanghai Swans were able to show the better time and came in second.

He was the only one of three German riders who managed to qualify for the jump-off. The number of faultless rides also remained low for the other participants, only three other riders managed a clear round. In the jump-off, Ahlmann and his 9-year-old mare Dolocia had to put in a quick time of 38.20 seconds without mistakes. Scott Brash was the second starter in the jump-off. With his chestnut gelding Forever , he rode the third obstacle diagonally to make up for time in the tight turn to the double (previously triple) combination. But he threw him back eight penalty points, he finished the jump-off in fourth place. Kevin Staut also made an obstacle error. This cleared the way for Alberto Zorzi, who remained flawless with Cornetto K and was 40 hundredths of a second faster than Ahlmann.

8th stage: Paris

After two stages on the Mediterranean, the GCT / GCL program took the riders to the French capital from June 30th to July 2nd, 2017. After the Paris Eiffel Jumping tournament was held a little more decentrally in the previous year due to the final round of the European Football Championship, it returned to the Field of Mars in 2017 in the immediate vicinity of the Eiffel Tower.

Global Champions League: In the first partial test, held on the afternoon of June 30th, two teams remained without obstacle errors: the St Tropez Pirates did not score any penalty points, while the Hamburg Diamonds were due to Audrey Coulter and Capital's eight hundredths of a second slow ride Colnardo suffered a time penalty. With eight penalty points each in the second partial test for both teams, the remaining teams got the chance to take the lead again. The closest came Lauren Hough and Sergio Álvarez Moya for Chantilly Pegasus with only one time penalty. But due to her preload of twelve penalty points from the first partial test, it was only enough for her for third place.

The three clear rides came early: Harrie Smolders as the sixth rider managed the first clear round, the third clear round was achieved by Olivier Philippaerts as the eleventh starter.

With his entry into the jump-off, Harrie Smolders already had the lead in the intermediate result of the GCT overall standings. With his 13-year-old Zangersheider stallion Don Z , he presented a flawless ride in the jump-off. Julien Epaillard rode the 9-year-old chestnut stallion Usual Suspect d'Auge as the second rider in the jump-off . For the stallion, this was the first Grand Prix at 5 * level, Epaillard had previously competed mostly in tests up to 1.40 meters high. Julien Epaillard took the lead without penalty points and well over a second faster than Smolders. Olivier Philippaerts was the last participant in the jump-off. With Legend of Love he got no penalty points here either, with his required time of 41.98 seconds he placed second.

9th stage: Cascais

The Portuguese stage of the Global Champions Tour / Global Champions League was held in Cascais . The venue was the Hipódromo Manuel Possolo. After the tournament was extended to three days in the previous year due to the implementation of the Global Champions League outside the program of the examinations according to the FEI regulations, exams were only held on two days in 2017: the CSI 5 * lasted from July 7th to 8th 2017 on. In addition to the GCL / GCT evaluation tests, there was only one test at all.

Global Champions League: Many riders finished the first partial test of the GCL in Cascais without penalty points, four teams finished the test without penalty points. The second partial test on Saturday (July 8th) was more demanding, with few clear rounds. Accordingly, only one of the four teams was able to maintain their flawless team result: Miami Glory. Thus the team victory seemed to be assured after the faultless ride of their last rider Scott Brash. However, during the routine inspection of Brash's horse Forever , a steward found a slightly bleeding spot on its flank, which led to the rider being excluded. Since the Global Champions League regulations do not provide for any cancellation results, this also meant the team was eliminated.

The victory in the test went to the Mexico Amigos, who were the only team to have only collected four penalty points from both partial tests.

In the normal course of the test, five participants remained without errors. In the jump-off of these riders it was Maikel van der Vleuten who (as the second starter) managed the first clear round. This tour was taken over by Danielle Goldstein, riding for Israel, who rode the chestnut mare Lizziemary here . After her, Martin Fuchs and Bertram Allen started. Fuchs was faster than Goldstein with Clooney , but both he and Allen had to accept four penalty points in the jump-off. This was the first time ever to win a Global Champions Tour special test.

10th stage: Chantilly

After being held in May, the CSI 5 * tournament in Chantilly 2017 returned to July. The event took place on the grounds of the racetrack on the edge of Chantilly Castle from July 13th to 16th, 2017.

Global Champions League: Two teams were in the lead without penalty points after the first GCL partial test on July 14th: Hamburg Diamonds and Miami Glory. Cascais Charms was still within striking distance , represented by Philip Houston with Loewenherz and David Will with Cento du Rouet . While the Cascais Charms dropped to seventh place in the second sub-test, the decision was made between the first-named teams. A mistake by Paris Sellon caused the Miami Glory penalty point to grow to four penalty points. The riders of Hamburg Diamonds were able to take advantage of this starting position: Harrie Smolders made no mistakes with Emerald . John Whitaker could even afford a time penalty with his gray stallion Cassinis Chaplin without jeopardizing the team victory .

Global Champions Tour: The GCT stage was held on Saturday (July 15th) from 5:15 pm. Few of the 25 starters remained without mistakes: up to the penultimate rider, only three riders had qualified for the jump-off. Scott Brash, as the last participant in the normal round, also made no mistakes, so four riders and their horses started in the jump-off. Philippe Rozier, the only French there, opened the jump-off with Rahotep de Toscane with a clear round. But his time proved to be beatable, Harrie Smolders as the second starter took the lead with Emerald . Slower than Smolders and with an obstacle error , Carlos Enrique Lopez Lizarazo as the third playoff participant had nothing to do with the decision to win. It was different with Scott Brash: With his 11-year-old gelding Forever he made it through the jump-off course without any mistakes, was fast, but slower than Harrie Smolders by over a second. For Smolders the second victory on that day was clear.

11th stage: Berlin

For the first time since 2013, the Global Champions Tour made two stops in Germany. After Hamburg, a new CSI 5 * tournament was held in Berlin from July 28th to 30th, 2017 . The summer garden of the Berlin exhibition center was selected as the location for the Global Jumping Berlin tournament .

Global Champions League: The end of the first day of the tournament was the first partial examination of the GCL in Berlin. Of the 18 teams, three remained without errors. No mistakes were made in the second test by two teams, both of which were far from the lead in the first round: the Cannes Stars in 16th place (represented in the second round by Ludger Beerbaum / Chacon and Marco Kutscher / Clenur ) and the last-placed Berlin Lions. The latter were represented in both rounds by Max Kühner and Anna Kellnerova, but after a total of 28 penalty points in the first sub-test, both of them started other horses in the second sub-test.

Despite four penalty points in each case in the second round, the decision was made between two teams that were flawless so far. Ultimately, the slow lap of Eric Lamaze and Chacco Kid brought the decision that the Hamburg Diamonds had to be satisfied with second place, while Alberto Zorzi and Bertram Allen secured victory as team riders for Valkenswaard United.

Global Champions Tour: The jump-off of the main test of the tournament, the GCT-Grand Prix, was clear in Berlin. Ludger Beerbaum narrowly missed the jump-off with Chacon with a time penalty, but three riders managed a clear round with their horses in the normal round.

Leopold van Asten was the first rider to take part in the jump-off, but with the 11-year-old mare Beauty he got eight penalty points. So the following two riders had a good chance of securing a German victory. The reigning German champions Simone Blum and Alice needed more than three seconds less than van Asten for the jump-off course and made no mistakes. Even with the secure second place for Blum, the greatest success so far in an internationally advertised test was certain.

Christian Ahlmann was the last to go into the jump-off. After unluckily missing the qualification for the Aachen Grand Prix the previous weekend , he attacked in Berlin: With Codex One he was even faster than Blum and won the GCT stage. On top of that, he won the championship on Sunday with Colorit , a test endowed with 92,000 euros.

12th stage: London

After a one-year break, the Global Champions Tour program again included a stage in London . Once again, the venue changed within the British capital. The tournament was now held from August 4-6, 2017 in the gardens of the Royal Hospital Chelsea on the left bank of the Thames .

Global Champions League: The British stage of the Global Champions League started with a surprise: After the first partial test, the Czech team Berlin Lions was the only team in the lead without a mistake. The Berlin Lions had made no mistakes in the second round in Berlin a week earlier, but otherwise had consistently been in the back of the season in the GCL stages.

In the second round, the Berlin Lions (again represented by Max Kühner and Anna Kellnerova) received five penalty points and were at the top of the field together with the Miami Glory and Valkenswaard United teams. However, since the other two teams had their time penalty in the first partial test and the time of the second partial test is decisive for the ranking, only the third place remained for the Berlin Lions. The victory went to Miami Glory, due in particular to the fast ride of Scott Brash and Forever (third place in the individual ranking of the second partial test).

Global Champions Tour: The time allowed in the normal circuit of the GCT stage in London was tight, so that five riders received time penalties. But quite a few remained without mistakes here: Christian Kukuk was the first starter to do this with Colestus . Ten other riders should be able to do the same with their horses. The shock moment of normal circulation was a fall of John Whitaker , who celebrated his 62nd birthday that day.

In the jump-off of these eleven riders, penalty points played a subordinate role, only two had obstacle errors in the jump-off. Fast riding decided the test for the best time. This was best achieved by Scott Brash, who went into the jump-off with Forever as the penultimate rider. After him, as the last participant, there was Ben Maher, who came close to Brash's time with Madame X , but was six hundredths of a second too slow for victory over the finish line.

13th stage: Valkenswaard

In the 12th season of the Global Champions Tour, Valkenswaard , hometown of series founder Jan Tops, was the venue for a stage of the GCT / GCL. The Dutch stage of the two tournament series took place on the ultra-modern riding facility, which has been expanded into the Tops International Arena from August 11th to 13th, 2017.

Global Champions League: Only the Hamburg Diamonds team, which was represented in Valkenswaard by Jos Verlooy and his stable colleague and trainer Harrie Smolders, remained completely flawless in the first partial test. The Berlin Lions also seemed to be on the road to success once again with just one time penalty. But Max Kühner and Anna Kellnerova collected 25 penalty points in the second partial test on Saturday, which dropped them to tenth place.

While the Hamburg Diamonds got four penalty points in the second part of the test, the Madrid in Motion team made no mistakes and thus also got four penalty points in the addition. Thus, the times of the second test were decisive, and the Hamburg Diamonds secured victory.

Global Champions Tour: For Daniel Deußer as the first starter, the GCT stage of Valkenswaard with Clintop was unsatisfactory (12 penalty points). Things looked better for the second rider in the starting field: Andreas Kreuzer made no obstacle errors with Calvilot . But as in the Grand Prix three weeks earlier, he had problems with the time, 29 hundredths of a second over 80 seconds meant a time penalty and thus no entry into the jump-off. Eight riders and their horses qualified for the jump-off when the heavy rain poured in.

Jos Verlooy and Caracas made the first error-free ride in the jump-off, but they did not yet make use of the possibilities of the jump-off course . Lorenzo de Luca was significantly faster and took the lead with Ensor de Litrange LXII . Christian Ahlmann was the third who managed a flawless ride in the jump-off. Like de Luca, he too stayed under 40 seconds, but it was not enough for the top position. The fourth and final clear round in the jump-off came about curiously: Maikel van der Vleuten's horse Verdi lost a lot of speed before the second obstacle and wanted to pound . In this situation, Van der Vleuten managed to convince his horse to continue the ride and despite this disturbance he was able to overcome the obstacle without errors. By riding briskly, he was even able to reduce the gap to de Luca, but due to the course of the ride, the time could not be caught. With a time of 40.31 seconds, van der Vleuten came third.

14th stage: Rome

For the third time, Rome hosted a stage of the Global Champions Tour. The Rome GCT / GCL tournament was held at the Stadio dei Marmi from September 21 to 24, 2017 .

Global Champions League: After the first of two partial tests of the GCL in Rome, the Valkenswaard United team, represented by Alberto Zorzi and Marcus Ehning, was the only one at the top without penalty points. But the second sub-test threw the previous result overboard: Valkenswaard United slipped to third place with 12 penalty points. In the second part of the test there were two teams that did not make any mistakes: Miami Glory had exchanged two horses and one rider compared to the first test. The fact that the second test was free of errors resulted in a total of nine penalty points, which was second place.

The Hamburg Diamonds only brought eight penalty points from the first test. Eric Lamaze and Harrie Smolders started the same horses in both tests. Two clear rounds meant victory in the GCL in Rome. In the overall GCL standings, the lead before the final in Doha was increased to 17 points.

Global Champions Tour: Only three out of 24 riders made it into the jump-off of the Global Champions Tour special test in Rome. Here it was up to Marcus Ehning to submit. He attacked with Funky Fred , but had to accept a mistake on the penultimate jump (a built-over moat). Harrie Smolders as the next starter did not take any chances and stayed with Don just within the allowed time of 53 seconds. However, since he made no mistakes, he took the lead. At this point in time it was already clear to Smolders that he could no longer take first place in the Global Champions Tour overall standings for the 2017 season. But in the day's decision for victory in the Grand Prix, there was another starter: the 24-year-old Swede Evelina Tovek competed with the 9-year-old gray gelding Castello . As the last starter in the jump-off, she made no mistakes. Her time was faster than that of Harrie Smolders, so that Tovek was able to celebrate the greatest success of her career so far.

15th stage: Doha

For the fifth year in a row, the Global Champions Tour concluded in Doha . The Al Shaqab riding facility in the capital of Qatar, built in 2013, was the venue for the CSI 5 * tournament. This took place from November 9th to 11th, 2017.

Global Champions League: Three teams completed the first part of the GCL stage in Doha without errors: the Mexico Amigos, the Paris Panthers and Valkenswaard United. The Paris Panthers fell in the second part of the test, as Lillie Keenan and Darragh Kenny each received four penalty points with their horses. Christian Ahlmann had not yet played for the Mexico Amigos in the first sub-test, in the second sub-test his four penalty points with Taloubet Z put the team back in second place. Alberto Zorzi and Bertram Allen were again without mistakes in the partial test, so that their team Valkenswaard United won the stage.

Global Champions Tour: 24 riders competed in this last GCT test of 2017, nine of them with their horses without faults. The jump-off of these nine started with faultless rides by Maikel van der Vleuten , Peder Fredricson and Janika Sprunger. The fourth clear round showed Bassem Hassan Mohammed, who took the lead with the 11-year-old gelding Gunder . It should have been the last clear round of the jump-off: Edwina Tops-Alexander , Martin Fuchs , Pieter Devos and also last rider Kevin Staut each received four penalty points. This means that victory in front of his home crowd in this 400,000 euro test went to Bassem Hassan Mohammed.
