The Global Champions Tour 2014 was the ninth season of the Global Champions Tour , an international tournament series. It is considered one of the most important series in show jumping .

In the 2014 season, Longines was the name sponsor and timepiece of the series for the second time , which is why it was named Longines Global Champions Tour 2014 . The Global Champions Tour (GCT) is a tournament series recognized by the FEI , organized by Jan Tops .

Course of the tournament series

Most of the tournaments in which the Global Champions Tour 2014 took place were held in Europe (12 stations). The tour ended with a stage on the Arabian Peninsula. The stage in Shanghai, which was canceled in the previous two years due to quarantine conditions, was implemented for the first time in 2014. The special stages of the 2014 season took place between April 26 and November 15, 2014.

All tournaments were  advertised as CSI 5 *, the highest category in show jumping.

The special stages took place on Saturday afternoons or evenings. They were advertised as a jumping competition with two different rounds and jump-offs , the height of the obstacles was up to 1.60 meters. These exams were each endowed with at least 285,000 .

The second round of the tests was achieved by the best 18 riders of the first round or all riders with faultless rides, if there were more than 18. The jump-off was achieved by the participants who were tied for first place after the two rounds (usually with no mistakes in both rounds).

media

As in previous years, Eurosport was the media partner of the Global Champions Tour. It mostly broadcast live the second round and the jump-off of the special stages live. The second round and the jump-off of the first two stages of the season were shown live on Eurosport 2 on the evening of the test , with Eurosport broadcasting a summary on Sunday morning.

The special stages and many other tests of GCT tournaments were on the website of the Global Champions Tour via live stream transmitted.

The exams

1st test: Antwerp

The 2014 GCT season began at a new venue: the Global Champions Tour stopped in the port of Antwerp, where CSI 4 tournaments were held in previous years, from April 24 to 27, 2014. For the first time since 2006, the tournament series had a Belgian stage.

In the first round of the special stage, which was held on April 26th from 6:30 p.m., 15 horse-rider pairs remained faultless, two other riders only had to accept a time penalty. For the second round of the best 18 starter pairs, Emanuele Gaudiano and Admara also qualified as the fastest participant with four penalty points.

In the second lap only six starters managed to stay clear. One of them was Gaudiano, who was able to work his way up to fourth place. In the jump-off of the five riders, who had not made a mistake in both laps, a close decision about victory finally came: only one starter had to accept an obstacle drop, the four remaining pairs achieved times of 37.12 seconds to 38.38 seconds. With the fastest clear time, victory went to McLain Ward and 13-year-old gelding Rothchild .

2nd test: Madrid

For the second time the Spanish special test of the Global Champions Tour took place in the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid. The tournament took place from May 2nd to May 4th, 2014. In addition to the Global Champions Tour special stage, which took place on Saturday from 5:00 p.m., the traditional King's Cup (Copa del Rey) took place on Sunday.

In the first round of the GCT test, 11 riders with their horses made no mistakes, seven other starters with one or four penalty points qualified for the second round. In the second lap there were quite a lot of mistakes, eight starter pairs had to accept time penalties (partly in addition to obstacle drops). Only five riders managed a fault-free lap in the second lap, for two of them this was the second fault-free ride in the test and thus the final.

In the jump-off, Marcus Ehning started with Plot Blue , again with no mistakes in 51.32 seconds. His competitor in the jump-off was Maikel van der Vleuten with the twelve-year-old stallion Verdi . Van der Vleuten stayed clear with a fast time of 49.68 seconds and thus secured victory.

3rd exam: Hamburg

In the 2014 season, in contrast to the previous year, the only German stage of the Global Champions Tour took place in Hamburg. The German show jumping and dressage derby took place on the Ascension weekend from May 28 to June 1, 2014 in Hamburg - Klein Flottbek . The Grand Prix of Hamburg, the GCT evaluation test of this tournament, was held on the afternoon of May 31, 2014.

In the first round of the Grand Prix, the time allowed caused problems for a number of riders, a good quarter of the starters crossed the finish line with at least one time penalty. Nine horse-rider pairs remained faultless in the first lap. Deviating from the normal number of 18 starter pairs, 19 riders were allowed to start in the second round, as Nick Skelton and Lucy Davis with their horses were in 18th place at the same time. However, Skelton waived the opportunity to start.

In the second lap all riders who had already had a time penalty in the first lap suffered another time error. Nevertheless, André Thieme and Søren Pedersen were able to achieve seventh and eighth place respectively from this group . For example, the previous year's winner pair, Christian Ahlmann and Codex One , fell behind them due to an obstacle drop.

The victory was won by six riders who again made no mistakes and qualified for the jump-off. After Ben Maher and his mare were in the lead in the jump-off, Katrin Eckermann and the chestnut stallion Firth of Lorne took the lead with a half-second lead . None of the jump-off participants came close to this time, and Eckermann won a stage of the Global Champions Tour for the first time.

4th test: Shanghai

From June 6th to 8th, 2014, the Global Champions Tour tournament was held in Shanghai for the first time . This had already been planned in the two previous years, but was canceled due to the problems resulting from the quarantine conditions (export of horses from China to Europe not permitted).

The tournament in Shanghai was the first equestrian event in mainland China, at which internationally successful show jumpers compete with their Grand Prix horses. In return, there was only one Chinese participant who rode a horse that had also flown in from Europe in the framework tests.

In the first round of the Grand Prix, the time allowed did not play a major role, only participants received time penalties. From only 31 starters, eleven horse-rider pairs remained without mistakes, eleven more crossed the finish line with four penalty points. In the second round of the best 18 participants, seven previously error-free riders managed to again make no mistakes and thus qualify for the jump-off.

In the jump-off, Michel Hécart, who has rarely been at the CSI 5 * level in recent years, was the first to fail without any mistakes, he rode the 11-year-old stallion Pasha du Gue . After Edwina Tops-Alexander took the lead, the victory ultimately went to Pieter Devos, who was faster again with Dream Of India without a mistake. The fastest time of the jump-off was achieved by Abdullah asch-Scharbatly , who started with the Tobalio , which he had taken over from Albert Voorn just a few weeks earlier as part of the Eurocommerce bankruptcy . Asch-Scharbatly, however, had to accept an obstacle drop and came in fourth in the end.

5th exam: Cannes

In France, the 2014 season will see three stops on the Global Champions Tour for the first time. The first of these took place from June 12 to 14, 2014 at the Jumping Cannes tournament. This was held in the Stade des Hespérides in Cannes .

In the first round of the Grand Prix, which was held on the evening of June 14th, 15 pairs of starters made no mistakes. In the second round this was achieved by eleven horse-rider pairs, nine of whom were thus for the second time in the test without errors and thus qualified for the jump-off.

In the jump-off, the overall leader of the GCT, Edwina Tops-Alexander with ten-year-old Ego van Orti , was the first to start. She remained without errors in 36.57 seconds. Bassem Hassan Mohammed and Victoria stayed slightly faster and also without mistakes . The third starter, Kevin Staut with Silvana , who took the lead, was significantly faster . But he too had to give up the lead, Scott Brash was more than a second faster with Sanctos . This time of Scott Brash was then undercut twice, but Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Hans-Dieter Dreher had to accept four penalty points in the jump-off with their horses. The victory in this test, endowed with 300,000 euros, went to Scott Brash and his 12-year-old gelding.

6th test: Monaco

The Monaco Global Champions Tour took place from June 26th to June 28th, 2014 on the banks of Boulevard Albert 1er at Port Hercule. As in previous years, the tournament was played on a clay court that was temporarily raised for the event.

The Grand Prix of the Prince of Monaco, in whose award ceremony Prince Albert II also took part, was held on the evening of June 28th. In the first round of this test, with 23 horse-rider pairs, exactly half of the starters got a result of four or less penalty points, ten of which remained without errors. In the second lap, five starter pairs managed to stay clear. Of these five, however, only two starter pairs failed to make mistakes in the first, so that a jump-off with only two riders was necessary.

In the jump-off, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson started with the 15-year-old stallion Casall , he stayed clear in a time of 37.77 seconds. His competitor, Bassem Hassan Mohammed with the mare Victoria , also made no mistakes . However, Mohammed was even faster than Bengtsson on his ride, so that he was able to celebrate the greatest single success of his career so far. In addition, this was the first victory of an Arab rider in a special stage of the Global Champions Tour, after a Moroccan rider had already achieved third place in Monaco two years earlier.

7. Exam: Paris

The 2014 season saw a stop on the Global Champions Tour in Paris for the first time. The Paris Eiffel Jumping horse show, which was also held for the first time, was held from July 4th to 6th, the venue was the Champ de Mars , in the immediate vicinity of the Eiffel Tower.

The time allowed was no problem for the riders in the first round of the Paris Grand Prix on Saturday evening. Twelve starter pairs stayed clear here, ten more got a result of four penalty points. The second round of the best 18 participants also proved to be a solvable task, there were eleven faultless rides. Nine starter pairs were faultless in the test for the second time and thus made it into the jump-off.

In the jump-off, four horse-rider pairs managed to get again without penalty points. Kevin Staut and his successful mare Silvana were the last rider to win . On the third Marcus Ehning with Cornado NRW . Paris Eiffel Jumping was a highly successful tournament for Ehning, as he also won the € 200,000 Gold Cup on Sunday with Sabrina . One of the bigger successes of recent times was fourth place in the Paris Grand Prix for Georgina Bloomberg , who competed here with Juvina .

8th test: Estoril

The Portuguese stage of the Global Champions Tour was held from July 11th to 12th, 2014 in the Hipódromo Manuel Possolo in Cascais . Since the neighboring Estoril is advertised as a sports tourism region with an advertising campaign, Estoril is usually named as the venue.

On both days of the tournament there was one exam in the morning and one in the evening of the day. The final stage of the tournament on Saturday evening was the Grand Prix of Cascais - Estoril, which was also the special stage of the Global Champions Tour. In the first round of this test, 12 starter pairs remained without errors, the starting field for the second round was filled by the six fastest riders with four penalty points. In the second lap only seven horse-rider pairs managed to remain without mistakes, five of them were already without mistakes in the first lap and thus qualified for the jump-off. The Swiss rider Nadja Peter-Steiner just missed it and crossed the finish line on both laps with Capuera II without any obstacle errors, but received a time penalty in the second lap.

In the jump-off of the Grand Prix, the last obstacle became the decisive factor: two riders conceded their only mistake here in the test, including the winning couple from Monaco - Bassem Hassan Mohammed and Victoria . Christian Ahlmann and Aragon Z already had an obstacle error on the jump-off course, on the last jump their result increased to eight penalty points in the jump-off. The victory went to world number one, Scott Brash and his successful horse Sanctos , who were already victorious in Cannes.

The last French stage of the 2014 Global Champions Tour season took place from July 25th to 27th, 2014 on the grounds of the racecourse on the edge of the Castle of Chantilly . Scoring points for the Global Champions Tour could be ridden on Saturday afternoon in the Longines GCT Grand Prix of Chantilly.

In the two rounds, four riders with their horses made no mistakes and went into the jump-off. Athina Onassis de Miranda came fifth with her gray mare Camille Z, also without obstacle errors, but with time penalties in both laps . In the jump-off, the four starters again all made no mistakes, so the time required was decisive. The Swedish riders Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Henrik von Eckermann took the first two places each with a time of less than 41 seconds.

10th test: Valkenswaard

The Dutch stage of the GCT has been taking place in the hometown of the series founder Jan Tops in Valkenswaard since the first Global Champions Tour season (2006) . The tournament was held from August 1st to August 3rd in 2014.

Eight riders managed to make no mistakes with their horses in both rounds. With a result of six penalty points in the jump-off, Oleksandr Onishchenko only came eighth in the test, but for him it was one of the greatest successes at CSI 5 * level. Three riders remained clear in the jump-off. In third place came Ludger Beerbaum, who, like in Chantilly, achieved the slowest fault-free ride in the jump-off. Henrik von Eckermann came second again, he rode Gotha FRH here . The victory went to Christian Ahlmann, who with Codex One won the second victory in a Grand Prix at 5 * level within a short time after the victory in Aachen .

11th test: London

For the second time, a GCT station also took place in the United Kingdom, in London. In comparison to the previous year, a new venue was chosen, the tournament took place from August 14th to 16th, 2014 on the Horse Guards Parade parade ground .

The Grand Prix took place on Saturday afternoon and evening. In the first lap of this GCT stage there was an unusually high number of faultless rides, 23 of 50 starter pairs remained faultless and thus qualified for the second lap. In this there were then six faultless rides. However, only four riders started with their horses in the jump-off: Laura Kraut had withdrawn her start; with Hans-Dieter Dreher's horse was found a small, probably caused by the spores bleeding site on the flanks, the couple is why the protection of the horse disqualified was.

In the jump-off, Ludger Beerbaum with Zinedine was initially clear, but Scott Brash with Sanctos was significantly faster and also without errors . As the last starter, Katherine Dinan still had a chance of victory, but her horse Nougat du Vallet refused to face an obstacle, Dinan supported the horse and was eliminated. For the world number one Brash, this meant the third victory in this Global Champions Tour season.

13th test: Ebreichsdorf

Due to an appointment collision with another user, the Vienna City Hall Square was not available from September 18 to 21, 2014. Therefore, the Vienna Masters tournament , which hosts the GCT stage in Austria, was postponed. It took place on the date mentioned in Ebreichsdorf , a good 30 kilometers south of Vienna . The venue was Magna Racino, a large equestrian facility owned by Magna Entertainment Corporation .

In the first round of the GCT evaluation test, 14 out of 46 starters made no mistakes, four riders with four penalty points completed the field for the second round. Four pairs of starters managed to make no mistakes in the second lap after the first lap. Of these four jump-off participants, the first three riders did not succeed in a clear round in the jump-off, all three crossed the finish line with four penalty points. Marcus Ehning, who with Plot Blue was the fastest clear rider in the first lap, was the last rider in the jump-off. In the jump-off, however, Ehning showed the slowest lap, but made no mistakes and won the test. Second placed Simon Delestre was over seven seconds faster with Qlassic Bois Margot .

14. Exam: Doha

For the second time in a row, Doha , capital of Qatar, hosted the final stage of the Global Champions Tour. The tournament was held from November 13th to November 15th, 2014 in the Al Shaqab riding facility, which was built in 2013 .

In the GCT evaluation test held on November 15, the aim was not only to win the 450,000 euro test, but also to win the overall standings, which were still completely open before this last stage of the tournament series. The first round turned out to be very challenging for the riders, of 40 starters only five horse-rider pairs managed a faultless ride, 50 percent of the participants had a result of nine or more penalty points, gave up or were eliminated. So even two starter pairs qualified with eight penalty points for the second round. Ludger Beerbaum, who had been leading in the overall standings up until then, missed the second lap, so he had almost no chance of overall victory.

In the second round, too, fault-free laps were few and far between, three pairs with fault-free laps qualified for the jump-off in both laps. With an overall result of one time penalty point, which he got on the first lap, Scott Brash finished fourth with Sanctos and had already secured victory in the overall standings. His fiercest competitor, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and his 15-year-old stallion Casall were the last starters in the jump-off and won the test. He was tied with Brash in the overall standings of the Global Champions Tour 2014, but Scott Brash had one more GCT win than Bengtsson that season.

Overall rating

The overall ranking decided the overall victory of the Global Champions Tour. Based on this ranking list, bonus prize money was awarded to the most successful riders on the Global Champions Tour at the end of the season. The decision about overall victory was extremely close and was not made until the last special stage. Scott Brash won three special stages, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson followed tied in second place and Ludger Beerbaum came third, just one point behind Brash and Bengtsson. Scott Brash thus defended his overall GCT victory from the previous year.
