Athina Hélène Onassis , Greek Αθηνά Ωνάση (born January 29, 1985 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , France ), birth name Athina Hélène Roussel (Αθηνά Ρουσσέλ), is a French-Greek entrepreneurial heir and show jumper. She is the granddaughter of the Greek shipowner Aristotle Onassis (1906–1975).

Life

Athina Onassis is the daughter of Christina Onassis , the only daughter of the Greek shipowner Aristoteles Onassis, and her husband Thierry Roussel. In contrast to her prominent family, Athina grew up largely shielded from the public. Her mother died when she was three and a half years old.

On January 29, 2003, at the age of 18, she inherited her grandfather's fortune, estimated at several billion euros, which after his death in 1975 had passed to her mother Christina, the Alexander Onassis Foundation and her step-grandmother Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis .

On December 3, 2005, she married the Brazilian show jumper Álvaro Affonso de Miranda Neto (Doda de Miranda) in São Paulo . During this time she took the surname Onassis de Miranda. The couple separated in 2016 and divorced in autumn 2017.

She is active as a show jumper herself and is the patron of the currently most important tournament series for show jumpers (individual evaluation) in the “green season”, the Global Champions Tour .

Athina Onassis has also competed as a show jumper in international tournaments for Greece since the beginning of 2006 . After initially riding mostly smaller CSI tournaments as well as large CSI tournaments on small and medium-sized tours, since 2011 she has also competed in the main tests at CSI 5 * tournaments.

In 2007 she achieved fourth place in the Grand Prix of the CSI 1 * in Wisbecq, Belgium with Welcome du Petit Vivier . In 2009 she was third with the same horse in the Grand Prix of the CSI 2 * in Valencia, Spain (small tour as part of the Global Champions Tour tournament).

In November 2012 Athina Onassis fell badly while training and sustained injuries to two cervical vertebrae. According to her husband, the spinal cord remained unharmed. From January 2013 she took part in tournaments again. In August 2013 she took part in the European Championships for the first time and reached 14th place in the individual ranking with Camille Z. A year later she also took part in the 2014 World Equestrian Games and came 66th in the individual ranking with Camille Z.

With Babouche and Welcome du Petit Vivier , she gave two of her successful horses as training horses to Doda de Miranda's daughter Viviane de Miranda, who competed in international tests for the first time in 2015 (with an obstacle height of up to 1.20 meters). In return, she acquired the mare Contanga , with whom André Thieme had previously won the US $ 1,000,000 Grand Prix in Ocala and was also placed in the Aachen Grand Prix .
