The Alexander Onassis Foundation is a private foundation that was established by Aristotle Onassis in memory of his son Alexander Onassis who died in an accident . The foundation was significantly expanded by his daughter Christina Onassis .

The foundation is administered by a committee of 15 people and has its legal seat in Liechtenstein . One area is economically active, the other oversees the charity projects. The foundation also awards various prizes, grants and finances projects and chairs in the areas of education, culture, health, religion, the environment and sport.

Awarded prizes (selection)

The foundation also awards the Onassis International Prizes, e.g. B. the Hestia Prize for the integration of foreigners. In 1980 the Prix d'Athene was awarded to Desmond Tutu .

Since 2010 the foundation's environmental prize has been awarded in Hamburg together with the Senate. The choice fell on Hamburg because the city has positioned itself as an environmental city and at the same time has a connection to Onassis. With 250,000 euros, it is one of the most highly endowed awards in the environmental protection sector.
