from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alexander Onassis ( Greek Αλέξανδρος Ωνάσης Aléxandros Onásis ) (born April 30, 1948 ; † January 23, 1973 in Athens , Greece ) was the only son of the Greek shipowner and billionaire Aristotle Onassis and his first wife Athina Livanos. The non-profit Alexander Onassis Foundation bears his name.

Life

Alexander Onassis grew up in well-sheltered and very rich circumstances. His parents' broken marriage weighed heavily on his youth; In 1960 the divorce was pronounced.

Unlike his sister and mother, he never indulged in excesses. In contrast to his father, who enjoyed the media hype around himself, he preferred to stand in the shadows and stay away from reporters. His private life was sacred to him, as he and his parents had often been the object of media interests in his youth. His partner in recent years was Fiona Thyssen, the divorced wife of Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemissa .

Onassis crashed in 1973 on a test flight over Athens. He was in a coma for three days before his father decided that life-prolonging measures should be discontinued. Alexander Onassis was buried on Skorpios Island , which was privately owned by the family. Aristotle Onassis founded the Alexander Onassis Foundation in memory of his son in Greece ; it is now based in New York City and is one of the largest charities in the world. Alexander's mother could not get over the death of her son and took her own life a year later. Aristotle Onassis fell into deep melancholy through the accidents and deaths in the family and was buried at Alexander's side after his death in 1975.

Alexander's sister Christina Onassis , who was two years his junior and who was not at all prepared for economic life, took over the family business after her brother and father died.
