Skorpios ( Greek Σκορπιός ( m. Sg. ), Pronunciation : [ skɔrˈpjɔs ]) is a small inhabited Greek island in the Ionian Sea . As their entire area is privately owned, entering the island is not permitted. Skorpios is a prominent example of a private island .

geography

Skorpios belongs to the Ionian Islands and is about one kilometer east of the neighboring island of Lefkada near the port of Nydri ; the island of Meganisi is just under two kilometers south. The Greek capital Athens is located 250 kilometers southeast. The island is rather flat and reaches a height of 81 meters, the surface measures almost 90 hectares. The island was once forested and now barren, today the island is again densely forested.

history

Little is known about the island's history, there are no traces of antiquity. The Venetians cleared the island, together with the rest of the Ionian Islands, Skorpios became part of Greece in 1864. In 1963 Aristotle Onassis bought the island and had it reforested at great expense. Today there are over 200 different tree species on the island.

On October 20, 1968, Aristotle Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy were married on the island. In the 1960s, numerous celebrities visited the island, some of them chased by paparazzi on their way. Onassis also had a chapel built on the island, after the death of his son Alexander Onassis he wanted to have him buried there. Since the Orthodox Church did not allow the burial of non-ecclesiastical people in a church, Onassis had an extension built with a separate entrance, which serves as a mausoleum, after consultation. Christina Onassis and himself were also buried there. Maria Callas was cremated according to her wishes and the ashes scattered off the island in the Ionian Sea.

Until a few years ago, the island was seasonally inhabited by the owner family and their around 600 servants. The maintenance costs for the island are around 1.5 million euros annually. In 2001, however, only two people with primary residence were registered on the island, the 2011 census still shows an actual resident of the island.

Various, mostly prominent, prospective buyers had visited the island, including Bill Gates , and at times a sale to Giorgio Armani was considered certain. In April 2013 to Skorpios for a period of 100 years Jekaterina Rybolowlewa, the 23-year-old daughter of Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolowlew leases have been. This is to circumvent a clause in Aristotle Onassis's will that says the island cannot be sold; in the event that his descendants could not support it, it should go to the Greek State or, if the latter does not take it over, to Olympic Airways . The effectiveness of the leasing contract should therefore be checked by the judiciary.
