Nydri ( Greek Νυδρί ( n. Sg. ), Also transcribed as Nidri ) is a village on the Greek island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea . Together with the village of Rachi it forms a municipality ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα Νυδρίου Dimotikí Kinótita Nydríou ) in the municipality of Ellomenos in the municipality of Lefkada with a total of 1,218 inhabitants.

location

Nydri is roughly in the middle of Lefkada on the east coast. Upstream are the Tilevoides ( Taphic Islands ) and in the south the peninsula named after the place Geni . There are traffic connections to the south of the island to Vasiliki and north to Lefkada via the Greek National Road 42 .

history

Wilhelm Dörpfeld monument

The natural double harbor in the east, a protective, ring-shaped mountain range and numerous karst springs have made the Nydri plain a popular settlement on Lefkada since the Early Bronze Age . The remains of an early Bronze Age settlement were excavated by the German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld at the beginning of the 20th century.

In 1963, the shipowner Aristotle Onassis bought the island of Skorpios, about two kilometers away behind Madouri, and made it a meeting place for the jet set. Since then, Nydri has seen several international guests. There is a statue of Onassis in the harbor. In the village there is a memorial to Wilhelm Dörpfeld, who died here in 1940.

Nydri developed into a lively summer vacation spot.

administration

The rural community of Nydri ( Κοινότητα Νυδρίου Kinótita Nydríou ) was founded in 1930 and initially belonged to the Preveza prefecture and then became part of the Lefkada prefecture in 1946 . Rachi was recognized as a settlement in 1961 and Dimosari in 1971. With the municipal reform in 1997 , Nydri was merged with eight other rural communities to form the municipality of Elommenos , which was merged with six other municipalities in the course of the Kallikratis program to form the newly created municipality of Lefkada , which includes the entire island of Lefkada with secondary islands as well as the larger part of the Tilevoides archipelago .
