Lefkada ( Greek Periferiaki Enotita Lefkadas , older even Lefkas Λευκάς) is one of five regional districts of the Greek region Ionian Islands . It consists of the two municipalities of Lefkada and Meganisi and sends four members to the regional council, but has no political significance beyond that.

In addition to the main island Lefkada the region comprising the group of islands Taphians (Τηλεβόιδες), namely Meganisi and located off the East Coast Lefkadas "Prinzeninseln" (Pringiponisia: Skorpios , Skorpidi , Madouri , Sparta , Thilia , Kythros and Cheloni ), also Kalamos and Kastos as well as some other uninhabited islands.

The area of the prefecture emerged largely from the Ithaque department founded in 1797 under Napoleonic rule and came together with Ithaka as the prefecture of Lefkas with the annexation of the Republic of the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1864 (along with the prefecture of Kefallinia ) . Ithaca was attached to Kefallinia Prefecture in 1866 and returned to Lefkada in 1899. In 1909 Lefkada (without Ithaca) became a province of the prefecture of Corfu, in 1946 again with Ithaka a province of the prefecture of Preveza. In 1953 the prefecture of Lefkada was finally re-established and existed in this form until 2010. With the administrative reform of 2010 , the prefecture was dissolved and its powers transferred to the Ionian Islands region and the newly allocated municipalities.
