Kastos ( Greek Καστός ( m. Sg. )) Is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea that belongs to the Tilevoides archipelago within the Ionian Islands . Until 2010 it was an independent rural community ( Greek κοινότητα kinotita ) in the prefecture of Lefkada , with the administrative reform in 2010 it was incorporated into the municipality of Lefkada , in which it has since formed a municipal district.
Kastos is only separated from the neighboring island of Kalamos by a sound about one kilometer wide; the distance to the mainland is eight kilometers. The hilly and only moderately vegetated island is almost eight kilometers long, up to one kilometer wide and has an area of 5.915 km². The highest point reaches a height of 155 meters. The official population is 80.
Almost 50 people live permanently on Kastos, almost all of whom live in the port of the same name on the east coast of Kastos. There is a much smaller hamlet on the west coast. Agriculture is negligible. Fishing is also becoming less and less important. Even if tourism is still underdeveloped, it is playing an increasingly important role.
Package tourism does not yet exist; the island, which is difficult to reach, is becoming more and more popular with sailors as a port. Accommodation and taverns are available at the port. There are also bathing bays.
