Kalamos ( Greek Κάλαμος ( m. Sg. ); In ancient times Karnos , Latin Carnus ) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea that belongs to the Tilevoides archipelago within the Ionian Islands . Until 2010 it was an independent rural community ( Greek κοινότητα kinotita ) in the prefecture of Lefkada , with the administrative reform in 2010 it was incorporated into the municipality of Lefkada , in which it has since formed a municipal district.

The island has around 496 permanent residents, but in summer the number of residents can easily triple due to the holiday stay of the migrated residents. Almost the entire population lives in the port of the same name Kalamos on the south coast; the small village of Episkopi on the north coast has only about 42 inhabitants.

The island of Kalamos is about eleven kilometers long, up to four kilometers wide and has a surface of 25.122 km². It is located east of the islands of Lefkas and Meganisi and is separated from the mainland by a sound just under two kilometers wide . The highest point on the mountainous island is the 747 meter high Vouno in the center of the island. In particular, the lower mountain slopes of the green island are densely forested.

Tourism is not as developed on Kalamos as it is on the more famous Ionian Islands. Package tourism is still unknown here, but more and more private accommodation is available.

There is a regular ferry connection to the port of Mitikas on the mainland. Excursion boats come from Lefkas in the season.
