Pieria ( Greek Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Πιερίας Periferiakí Enótita Pierías ) is one of the seven regional districts of the Central Macedonia region around the capital Katerini in Greece .

geography

Geographical location

The Olympus , the highest mountain in Greece (summit Mytikas 2918 m) and the myth seat of the Greek gods, is in the south of the border to the Regional District Larisa .

climate

The climate in the coastal zone is mild. In the summer the heat is weakened by a light wind from the sea. In the hinterland, especially in the mountainous part, the climate is harsher.

history

According to Strabo , after the Pelasgians and before the Macedonians, the Pieria- Thracians or Pieri lived in Pieria , whose first leader, according to legend, was Pieros.

Pieria was formed as a prefecture in 1949 by outsourcing from the prefecture of Thessaloniki and named after the Piera mountains with the mountain Pierus . With the administrative reform of 2010 , the competences of the prefecture were transferred to the region of Central Macedonia and the municipalities, which were greatly reduced in number due to the amalgamation. The regional district established instead sends five members to the Central Macedonian Regional Council, but has no political significance beyond that. Pieria includes the municipalities of Dion-Olymbos , Katerini and Pydna-Kolindros .

traffic

The A1 motorway , also the main artery of the Greek railway , runs through Pieria, while the Piraeus – Thessaloniki railway crosses Pieria from south to north.

economy

Essentially, agriculture is practiced in Pieria . Tobacco, sugar beet, cotton, wine, fruit, vegetables and garden products are grown in the region. Milk, meat and cheese are produced in the surrounding mountains. There is industry especially in and around Katerini. For some time now, tourism has also been an economic factor. The long sandy beaches on the Thermaic Gulf are a major tourist attraction . In some places (e.g. near Platamonas) there is also a stone beach. Litochoro is used as a starting point for mountain tours to Olympus.
