Surname

According to Lidell-Scott , the name Platamonas should mean “wide beach” (platys aigaialos). Recently, the archaeologist Efi Poulaki-Pandermali found a mention of the name Platamon in the writings of Homer . In ancient times, Platamon meant "a stone that is polished by the sea".

history

Platamonas Castle

The city of Herakleion is said to have been located on the castle hill. It was first mentioned by Skylax von Caryanda in 360 BC. In his work Periplous . Titius Livius located Herakleion "in the middle of the road from Dion to Tempe ". In 169 BC The Romans set up their camp in the plain between Herakleion and the ancient Leibethra , in order to conduct their campaign against the Macedonians from here .

In the Middle Ages and the early modern period, the place played a role mainly because of its Byzantine castle ( Kastron ). The castle is located about 2 km north of the modern place at a strategically important point and thereby controlled the passage of people and material along the coast of the Thermaic Gulf from the north (e.g. from Thessaloniki) to the south (e.g. Larisa or Athens) through the Tembi Valley, the northern exit of which is about 10 kilometers south of Platamonas. The Frankish king of Thessaloniki , Bonifatius I von Montferrat , built the fortress in its present form in 1205 on the walls of a Byzantine fortress from the 6th – 10th centuries. Century. From 1389 the castle and the village fell under the rule of the Ottoman Empire . After the liberation of southern Greece and the annexation of Thessaly to the Kingdom of Greece in 1881, the castle gained importance again because it was on the Greek-Turkish border . With the conquest of the Greek region of Macedonia by Greece in the First Balkan War , the castle lost its strategic importance and was neglected. It is now used for theater performances, concerts and other cultural events.

economy

Platamonas is currently of tourist importance as a seaside resort, which is visited by 120,000 tourists annually. In Platamonas there are several campsites as well as numerous hotels, guest houses and holiday homes. The beach, from which the peaks of Mount Olympus can be seen, has pebbles and sand. For the clear beaches and the clean harbor, Platamonas was awarded the EU Blue Flag in 2002 and 2006 . The fishing port was converted into a marina a few years ago.

traffic

The Piraeus – Thessaloniki railway runs across the district . The old train station in Platamon was closed due to the expansion of the line, the next train station is now in the neighboring town of Nei Pori . The A1 motorway touches the town, there is an exit.
