Paralia ( Greek Παραλία ( f. Sg. )) Is a small town on the Thermaic Gulf about 8 km west of Katerini in the Greek region of Central Macedonia .

The place was founded in 1923 by refugees from Kios as the Vromeróskala (Βρωμερόσκαλα) after the population exchange agreed in the Treaty of Lausanne . It was renamed Paralia in 1950. Paralia became an independent rural community (kinotita) in 1966 when it was spun off from the neighboring town of Kallithea, and in 1997 when Kallithea and Peristasi were incorporated into the municipality (dimos). With the administrative reform in 2010 Paralia was incorporated into the city of Katerini , where it has since formed a district with three localities.

The place Paralia itself offers no sights apart from the centrally located church Agia Fotini (Αγία Φωτεινή) directly on the sea and the small harbor at the southern end of the place: the beach on the Thermaic Gulf is very beautiful. The place has artificially 'grown' and offers numerous tourists a large number of taverns, bars and discos, especially in the high season. However, one should not expect originally Greek life here.

In the summer months there is a bus between Paralia and Katerini every 30 minutes, but it leaves in the center of Katerini and not at the bus station.

economy

For a long time, the rather small town was largely shaped by the fur shops from the furrier town of Kastoria , Paralia, “a seaside resort with more fur shops than ice cream parlors”, just under 120 kilometers away . Even after the year 2000, the Castorian merchants maintained around 120 branches here. According to one of the owners, Stergios Papagiannis, 80 percent of his customers were Russians: “Between June and August the tourists come here to relax for a few weeks and try on a few furs and choose something, then in In August and September they come for a few days with the intention of buying ”. On Niki Street, the two-kilometer “fur road” leading through Paralia to the beach, you could only find fur shops.
