Panorama of Gemlik

Gemlik (formerly Kίος Kios in Greek ) is a port city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Bursa and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Bursa (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 1986 . It is known for a black olive variety .

The city has been threatened for centuries by the earthquake fissure that extends from Lake Iznik along the ancient Ascanius River into the Sea of Marmara.

history

The history of the city begins in 630 BC. The name Kios (Greek Kίος or Kείος Keios , Latin Cius ) is mentioned in the Argonauts saga and by Strabo . Heracles ran aground there, Aristotle praised the laws of Kios ( Kionion Politeia ). In Roman times the city was called Prusias ad Mare . In the times of the Silk Road , Kios was one of the richest cities on the Mediterranean, as the end of the trade route to China was not far from today's modern Gemlik free port . In the course of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey after the Greco-Turkish War in 1922, the Greek population had to leave the city. Most of them moved to the Peloponnese and founded the city of Nea Kios (New Kios) in the Argolis .

The former ancient port of Gemlik is now overbuilt by the new town. Of the ancient city, only a few Cyclops walls and a few fragments of the wall at the city administration can be seen. A military installation stands on the site of the old acropolis . Reminiscent of the function as a trading and port city in the 4th century BC Coins minted in BC, showing a prora on the reverse.

Modern city

From the former Greek settlements only dilapidated houses and an Orthodox church that has been converted into a mosque remain. The new town consists of small high-rise buildings. The entire width of the bank passage has been paved and is accessible.

Gemlik Port

Gemlik has a large industrial container port called Gemlik Port with a BUSEB free trade zone . The cars produced in Bursa and Adapazarı are shipped from here.
