Nea Kios ( Greek Νέα Κίος ( f. Sg. )) Is a small Greek town on the Argolic Gulf in the northeast of the Peloponnese . Nea Kios was spun off from the Argos municipality as a rural municipality (kinotita) in 1928, raised to a municipal municipality (dimos) in 1997 and lost its independence when it was incorporated into the newly created municipality of Argos-Mycenae in 2011 , where it has been a municipality since then.
location
Nea Kios is at the northern end of the Argolic Gulf , between the mouth of the Erasinos and Inachos . Argos is 6 km north, Nafplio about 6 km east on the coast. The nearest train station is Myli , where the Kalamata - Tripoli - Argos - Corinth railway line runs. The area of Nea Kios is completely encompassed by the much larger area of the northern parish of Argos.
history
As a community of displaced people, Nea Kios is the historical continuation of the city of Kios in Asia Minor. Kios (today Gemlik ) was on the Marmara Sea, had 20,000 inhabitants and was the seat of the Bishop of Nicaea . Nea Kios was founded in 1927 by refugees who had been expelled from Kios as a result of the Asia Minor catastrophe . It is the only independent refugee community in the Peloponnese. The settlement of the refugees in the marshland of ancient Timenio was difficult and lengthy.
character
Today Nea Kios is a quiet fishing and seaside resort in a favorable position by the sea with a fishing port at the mouth of the Erasinos River with some picturesque charm. In terms of tourism, he benefits from the nearby Nafplio , the nearby beaches on the Argolic Gulf and - in addition to Mycenae and Epidaurus , the well-known excursion destinations of the Argolis , also from nearby attractions such as the pilgrimage site of Zoodochos Pigi in a stalactite cave near the village of Kefalari and pyramids between Kefalari and Elliniko.
Nea Kios made inglorious headlines in 2000 through pogrom-like riots against Roma living there .
partnership
Nea Kios and the Rhineland-Palatinate community of Meddersheim are striving for a partnership.
