Bursa is a Turkish province in the west of Asia Minor on the coast of the Sea of Marmara , 100 km south of Istanbul . Like the provincial capital of the same name, it is called Bursa in its center, which is the fourth largest city in Turkey with 1.9 million inhabitants.

The province has an area of 10,813 km² and had 2,994,521 inhabitants at the end of 2018 (ADNKS population update). With almost 300 inhabitants per square kilometer, Bursa is one of the more densely populated regions in Turkey. In its green landscape (Yeşil Bursa, German called Green Bursa ) there are some healing sulfur springs . The Uludağ Mountains, which used to be called the Mysian or Bithynian Olympus , stretch through the middle .

Administrative division

The province has been divided into 17 İlçe since 1990 , which resemble a district in terms of settlement in rural areas and a district in urban agglomerations. In 1986 the old municipality of Bursa was dissolved and a large city municipality ( Balıkesir Büyükşehir Belediyesi ) was established in its place . For this purpose, the old urban area was divided into several municipalities ( Belediye ) and with these and neighboring municipalities, the metropolitan municipality was formed. Successive was set up and dissolution of municipalities and overpasses of village ( Köy ) in Mahalle organizations a Einräumigkeit manufactured by local administration (by the Belediye) and state management (by the İlçe), so that as a result, the area of the individual communities with the each state administrative district of the same name covers. Following an administrative reform in 2013, the metropolitan area covers the entire province. The municipal self-government organs at provincial level ( İl Meclisi ) were dissolved and their responsibilities were transferred to the administration of the metropolitan municipality. The province thus became a purely state administrative district.

history

In ancient times the region was called Bithynia . This kingdom and its three largest cities (u. A. Broussa ) were probably of King Prusias I founded.

With the expansion of the Roman Empire , King Nicomedes IV began to hand over the area piece by piece to the Romans. At that time and in the time of early Christianity , Bursa was called Prussa ad Olympos .

For the Byzantines , the area was the center of a large administrative region ( theme ) that stretched from today's İzmit , Istanbul and Bilecik to Ereğli on the Black Sea .

The Ottomans conquered Bursa around 1326 by the later Sultan Orhan I and had their residence in today's provincial capital until it was moved to Edirne in 1368 and later to Istanbul ( Constantinople ), 90 kilometers north . Important sights are the tombs of the sultans Mehmed I , Osman I and Orhan I, the Yeşil Türbe and three magnificent mosques built between 1380 and 1420 .

The oldest building is the Ayasofya Basilica (Hagia Sophia) from the 4th century in nearby İznik . The seventh ecumenical council was held here. Orhan converted it into a mosque, which has since fallen into serious disrepair. Nevertheless, its frescoes , inscriptions and mosaics as well as the stepped apse are remarkable.

partnership

A partnership has existed between Bursa and the German state of Hesse since October 21, 2010 . The second part of the partnership agreement was signed on January 24, 2011 in Wiesbaden .
