Bayburt is a province of Turkey , with the capital of the same name Bayburt .

The province has 82,274 inhabitants (as of the end of 2018) on an area of ​​3,746 km². It borders on the Gümüşhane Province to the west, Erzurum to the east, Trabzon and Rize to the north and Erzincan to the south . Bayburt has only been an independent province since June 21, 1989. From 1923 to 1989 it was part of Gümüşhane Province.

The Armenian Varzahan Monastery ( Uğrak Kiliseleri ) was located in Bayburt Province .

In addition to the three district towns, there are two other towns ( Gökçedere in the Demirözü district with 2,299 and Arpalı in the Bayburt district with 2,268 inhabitants) and 170 villages, the largest of which ( Konursu ) has 1,185 inhabitants. The average population per village is 156 people.
