Bayburt ( Armenian Բաբերդ Papert ) is a Turkish city in northeastern Anatolia on the banks of the Çoruh River . It is the capital of the Bayburt province of the same name and also of the central district ( Merkez ). The district still includes 121 villages ( Köy ), of which Konursu is the largest with 1,176 inhabitants.
history
The garrison town of Bayburt was on the Silk Road and was ruled by many peoples, for example the Urartians , Armenians , Persians , the Roman Empire and the Seljuks . It has been renamed several times throughout its history.
The Mongols were here in 1364 by Alexios III. , the Emperor of Trebizond . In 1462 the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II fought here against the Turkish-born Akkoyunlu . In 1825 the city was completely destroyed during an invasion by the Russians , but it was rebuilt. Bayburt used to belong to Erzurum and after the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 to the province of Gümüşhane . With the creation of the province of Bayburt in 1989, it received provincial status.
Attractions
Worth seeing are the bathhouses of Bent , Ali Şingâh, Paşaoğulları and Pulur, the Great Mosque (Ulu Cami) of Bayburt, the mosques of Kutluk Bey, Pulur and Yukarı Hınzevrek, Hart, the ruins of Ksanta and Varzahan , Meydan, the Korgan Bridge, the Türben from Taşhan and Şehit Osman.
Bayburt Kalesi Castle is located within the city on a steep rocky promontory above the Çoruh . The current building is an Ottoman fortress with a Seljuk predecessor building: the surrounding wall was restored by the Turkish antiquities administration. Iron Age fragments come from the castle hill, suggesting a previous Urartian building .

In the stories about Dede Korkut, which are among the highlights of Turkish literary history, the events of that time are told in a fabulous form. Since Bayburt plays a role in the story, the festival of Dede Korkut is celebrated here every year . The stories go back to the 12th century. The year 1999 has been declared the 'Dede Korkut Year' by UNESCO . Many celebrations and events in honor of Dede Korkut also took place abroad.
The old Turkish horse game Cirit ( Cavgan ) is still played in Bayburt . The Turks brought the game to Anatolia from Central Asia. Horses have always been sacred animals for the Turkic peoples .
