Hovhannes XI. von Bayburt (* as Hovhannes Çamaşırciyan 1757 in Constantinople or Bayburt; † July 26, 1817 in Skutari ) was the 58th Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople (1800-1801 and 1802-1813) and archbishop . He was a student of Patriarch Zacharia II (Kağizmanlı Zakarya; 1719–1799).

Life

He received his education at the school founded by Patriarch Hagop II. Nalyan opposite the Patriarchate building. Before being elected patriarch, he lived in the Balat district . He became the Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople twice. The first time from May 19, 1800 to October 19, 1801 and the second time from December 3, 1802 to September 1, 1813. During his tenure, seven churches were completely rebuilt. When British ships anchored off Heybeliada in 1807 , Hovhannes XI helped. von Bayburt actively strengthened the fortifications and was surprised by Sultan Selim III. rewarded, who now also lend a hand. In 1813, Hovhannes XI. resign from office due to health problems. He spent the last few years in the Jerusalem Patriarchate's guest house at the Yenima Hall in Scutari , on the Asian side of the Bosporus. There he left source material to the later historian and lecturer Avedis Berberyan and is said to have inspired him for the writing of history. He died in Scutari in 1817 .
