Abraham I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abraham ( Armenian Աբրահամ Ա. ) Was the first Armenian patriarch of Jerusalem from 638 to 669 . His life dates are historically uncertain.

Life

At the time of the conquest of Jerusalem by the Arabs (638) he is said to have succeeded in preserving the rights and privileges of the Armenians living in Jerusalem as well as their property. However, related documents (such as a document from the caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Chattāb ) were recognized as forgeries at the end of the 1960s. However, it is undisputed that Armenians have played an important role in Jerusalem and at the court of the caliphs since the 7th century.

Services

According to Armenian sources, he is said to have defended and preserved the rights and possessions of the Armenians in the Holy Land at the time of the conquest of Jerusalem by the Arabs.
