With Peppermint I'm Your Prince is the fourth studio album by the German musician Marius Müller-Westernhagen , which was not unsuccessful when it was released in 1978, but only developed into a cult album and sales success over the years.

production

The album was recorded from June 25th to 30th and July 8th, 1978 in the Musicland Studios under the direction of Peter Lüdemann and from August 14th to 15th, 1978 in the Union Studio in Munich under the direction of Zeke Lund (among others The Smoke , Rondo A Tre ) mixed. Westernhagen's new producer Lothar Meid , both of whom met while filming, gave him a completely new image, which was also reflected in the music. The previous records under the production of guitarist Peter Hesslein (including Lucifer's Friend ) had placed the musician Westernhagen in the corner of the popular songwriters of the 1970s . Together with the songs written by Westernhagen, Meid created a rather "dirty-dirty" rock 'n' roll image, which is also hinted at in the cover. In 1987 the recordings were revised and published on CD.

style

Musically, the album has its roots primarily in blues rock and rock 'n' roll . It is characterized by cheeky, now and then also frivolous, texts, which Westernhagen reads very passionately, sometimes screamingly primitive. The lyrics and rhythms often invite you to sing along. During the concerts and appearances of the late 1970s, Westernhagen behaved accordingly to this new, rough rock image. On the big stage tours of Western Hague in the 1990s, songs like Dicke , Johnny W. , At 18 or the album's title track were always part of the repertoire. They were (and are) expected by the fans and were sung along with confidence. The record is now considered a cult album of both the interpreter and the German rock genre .

Text examples and controversies

Westernhagen 2008

Some songs attracted media attention. The song Dicke , which Müller-Westernhagen's audience liked to shout along with and thus considered capable of consensus in terms of performance , was viewed as a violent disparagement, although the text is supposed to have a satirical-ironic intention, according to Müller-Westernhagen's self-interpretation in 1989, d. H. after a decade after the song was published in 1978. The unintended reception of the song and the enthusiastic reception by the audience did not prevent Müller-Westernhagen from performing the song again and again until 2015, when he declared that he no longer wanted to play it.

Greet me comrades was also perceived as provocative . In the text, the controversial search methods in the fight against the RAF terrorists during the German Autumn are discussed in an ironically exaggerated way .

The other day, at 6 o'clock in the morning, the door was
kicked for me. I jump out of bed, and the police rushed in.
“Come on, stand against the wall, you have been recognized”.
A neighbor called us: “You are a sympathizer “
I say:“ That must be a mistake, I'm just a citizen ”
But they plow up my apartment as if I were a strangler

- say hello to the comrades

Cover

On the cover he designed himself and photographed by Michael Ballhaus , Westernhagen, dressed in blue jeans and a black leather jacket with a turned-up collar made of fake fur, a bottle of Johnnie Walker in his hand, looks at the viewer. In the background of a bar there is a lascivious waitress, portrayed by the then model and today's author Lilli Beck, a lonely drinker, a man on the phone and a presumably gay couple. All images should be seen as an allusion to text passages on the album.

Reviews

The album is often referred to as Westernhagen's actual debut album, as he was previously known to the public as an actor in films such as The Second Awakening of Christa Klages or The Invitation to Dance  - the prelude to the successful 1980 film Theo Against the Rest of the World . With peppermint I am your prince sold well for the first time and achieved significant placements. The cult status developed slowly, not least because of the catchy mix of snotty lyrics combined with musical elements from rock and blues.

Charts and chart placement

The single with peppermint I'm your prince / Alles in den Wind did not achieve a noteworthy placement. However, at number 19 in the German album charts , the record as a whole was Westernhagen's most successful album to date, but it wasn't really a best seller either. Only after a few years did it reach gold status in 1981 with 250,000 copies sold and increasingly solidified as a cult album. Not least because of the re-edition as CD, over 1.5 million records have now been sold, for which it was awarded three times platinum .

New recording (The Peppermint Experiment)

On November 8, 2019, a newly recorded version of the album will be released by Polydor under the title Das Pfefferminz-Experiment (Woodstock Recordings Vol. 1) . The album was recorded at Dreamland Studio in Woodstock in 2019 . A new version of the song At 18 had a video premiere on October 16, 2019. Shahin Shokoui, Agnesz Pakozdi and Chris Hegedus-Pennebaker made a documentary about the creation of the album. The premiere of this film took place on October 16, 2019 at the Film Festival Cologne .
