Lothar Meid
Lothar Meid (born August 28, 1942 in Babenhausen (Swabia) ; † November 3, 2015 in Hamburg ) was a German bass player, music producer and film composer . He began his career with Klaus Doldinger , was one of the founding members of the band Embryo in 1969 and was bassist for the band Amon Düül II from 1971 to 1974 and after the reunion in 1989 until shortly before his death in 2015 . In addition, Meid has produced numerous Marius Müller-Westernhagen albums since the 1970s and the music for several films a. a. composed by Klaus Lemke .
Live and act
Meid's career as a musician began in the late 1950s in jazz clubs in Munich. In the following years he made a name for himself as a jazz bassist. In 1968 he was a guest musician in Klaus Doldinger's quartet and then took over bass in Doldinger's Motherhood in 1969 (with Udo Lindenberg on drums) and in 1971 on the first album by Doldinger's Passport . In the late 1960s he also worked as a songwriter with the film composer Peter Thomas on the Edgar Wallace film Im Banne des Unheimlichen .
In 1969 Meid was one of the founding members of the band Embryo . From 1971 to 1974 he was a member of the Krautrock band Amon Düül II . In 1973 he recorded the LP Utopia with Olaf Kübler and musicians from Amon Düül II , which was initially marketed under this group name, but later as an album by Amon Düül II. Also in 1973 he worked as a sideman for Peter Maffay on his album Omen .
In the second half of the 1970s he recorded three albums under his own name. From 1978 he also worked as a producer for Marius Müller-Westernhagen , whose albums he produced, beginning with With Peppermint I'm Your Prince . Meid can also be heard on the bass and other instruments on some Westernhagen tracks. In the song "Rosi" he is mentioned by name in the lyrics: "She meets Lothar Meid, because he knows all about every safe. Rosi has no money, nothing falls from heaven, with Lothar she takes it from those who have it."
From the late 1970s onwards he played and produced again and again with musicians from the Marionettes (later Marionetz ) , a Munich punk band that was mainly supported in its early years by musicians from Amon Düül II.
As an actor he worked in Klaus Lemke's film Idole in 1976 and in the following years worked for Lemke and others as a film composer; he wrote the music for the road movie Theo against the rest of the world (1980) and for The Heartbreakers (1983).
In the late 1980s, Meid produced the debut album by Jocco Abendroth and the LP The new machine of Liechtenstein by the thrash metal band Holy Moses .
After the reunion of Amon Düül II, Meid soon rejoined the permanent line-up of this band, which started giving sporadic concerts from 1989, released new albums from 1995 and again completed major tours. In the 2000s, Meid also played with the bands The Big Bang and Passierzettel . His last project in 2012 was the band Deutsch Nepal founded by Marc Tepelmann , with whom he played songs by Amon Düül II as well as his own. The band name corresponds to a song title from the LP Utopia from 1973. In 2014, together with companions of Embryo and Amon Düül II, he gave a guest performance in the Kraut & Drastik event series at the Münchner Kammerspiele .
In spring 2015 Meid left Amon Düül due to illness. He was replaced by Sigi Pop von den Marionetz for the rest of that year .
