There is also the non-officially named part of the municipality Sparergatt in the municipality .

history

Until the 19th century

The name of the settlement was first mentioned in a document on March 24, 1237 in the course of the settlement of a border dispute. On May 12, 1315, the name city was already included in a deed of purchase. Emperor Ludwig IV the Bavarian granted Ulm city rights in 1337. In 1436 Rudolf Mötteli vom Rappenstein acquired the castle and market for around 2000 guilders from Benno and Albrecht von Rechberg. On July 26, 1466, as part of the so-called Rottweiler judgment, the imperial eight was imposed on the rule of Babenhausen. As a result, Babenhausen's town charter was permanently lost.

Before 1800 the market was ruled by the Fugger-Babenhausen princes and from 1500 belonged to the Swabian Empire . In 1803 Babenhausen became an imperial principality . With the Rhine Confederation Act in 1806, the place became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria , and until 1848 the place was the seat of the Princely Fugger Court of Babenhausen.

The Franciscan monastery in Klosterbeuren was founded before 1273 and demolished in 1860.

Rail connection

In 1894 the place was connected to the railway network by the single-track branch line Kellmünz on the Iller - Babenhausen branching off from the Illertalbahn . Seventy years later, in 1964, local passenger traffic was discontinued and a cycle path has been running on the former embankment since 2009.

Incorporations

The formerly independent municipality of Klosterbeuren and the village of Unterschönegg of the municipality of Oberroth were incorporated into Markt Babenhausen on May 1, 1978 as part of the municipal reform.

badges and flags

Blazon : "In gold between three (2: 1) black mallets a black star."

The original coat of arms dates back to 1471, making it the second oldest communal coat of arms in the Unterallgäu district. The by Emperor Friedrich III. Coat of arms letter awarded to Regensburg on July 15, 1471 describes the coat of arms privilege as follows:

"A yellow scabbard, in it three swarcz slugs, the style underneath is keret, you stand two up next to each other, and in between a black star and under the same star the third slug in the middle of the scarf ...".

The Schlegel as a coat of arms symbol are taken from the coat of arms of the former local lord Konrad von Schönegge with the surname Prügel, which can be traced back as a family coat of arms to the year 1273. They commemorate the rule of the Reichsministeriale, the Lords of Schönegg in the 13th and 14th centuries. In 1796, Count Anselm Maria Fugger added a coat of arms with two crossed pennants, a steel-colored, bourgeois helmet and a golden wall crown. Similar attributes adorned various other municipal coats of arms in the district, in keeping with the spirit of the times. However, since a government directive of July 27, 1928, all of these additions are inadmissible and are therefore not part of a legally binding historical coat of arms.

The market carries a black and yellow striped flag with the municipality's coat of arms on it.
