history

The Fuggers are originally a Swabian merchant family who have lived in the imperial city of Augsburg since Hans Fuggers (? - 1408/09) immigrated from Graben in 1367 . In 1538, Anton Fugger, who was raised to the rank of imperial count in 1530, acquired Babenhausen Castle, which had existed since 1237, and the associated lordship, and had it completely rebuilt in 1541. The Fugger von der Lilie had the hereditary imperial and district estate in the Swabian district since 1583 and belonged to the Swabian Imperial Counts College . In 1803 the Principality of Babenhausen was formed from the dominions of Babenhausen and Kettershausen, and Count Anselm Maria Fugger von Babenhausen was elevated to the rank of imperial prince . With the Rhine Confederation Act in 1806, the principality came under the rule of the Kingdom of Bavaria . Until 1848, the place was the seat of the Princely Fugger court in Babenhausen. The Fugger Castle in Babenhausen is still owned by the family today.
