Graben is a municipality in the Swabian district of Augsburg . It is the hometown of the Fugger family .

The place Graben is about 20 kilometers south of Augsburg between Lech and Wertach on the Lechfeld . The city of Schwabmünchen is located about five kilometers west of Graben .

history

Until the church is planted

Via Claudia Augusta south of Graben

In 955 the battle took place on the Lechfeld . In 1063 the village of Graben was first mentioned as "ecclesia Grabon". The place name is interpreted as a reference to the Roman long-distance water line , which, if the archaeological traces are correctly interpreted, as a canal line with a depth of 2.5 m and 7–8 m width and with a gradient of around 3 per thousand possibly coming from the Hurlach spring reservoir Water supply for Augusta Vindelicum , 35 km away , had been created and fell into disrepair after the Romans withdrew. Graben is located directly on the Roman highway Via Claudia Augusta , which is still clearly visible today as a Roman road and runs exactly straight through the village and over the adjacent fields.

Bishop Heinrich II of Augsburg bequeathed the church with 2 Hufen acres to the cathedral chapter of Augsburg. The knight dynasty "those von Graben" ruled around 1100 in Graben in the name of the cathedral chapter. In 1170 the Counts of Marstetten acquired property in Graben. In 1350 a canon office was established in Graben. The parish church was rebuilt in 1354.

In 1367, the Graebinger weaver Hans Fugger moved to Augsburg and in 1386 became the first weavers' guild master in Augsburg , which laid the foundation stone for the Fugger's later economic empire . The symbols of the two Fugger lines, Fugger von der Reh and Fugger von der Lilie, are still combined in the municipal coat of arms of Graben. The respective head of the princely line Fugger-Babenhausen has automatically been an honorary citizen of Graben since 1899. Lukas Fugger moved back to Graben in 1504. In the same year the church of Graben was rebuilt.

The cemetery around the church was expanded into a fortified church in 1513. Gräbingen farmers took part in the Peasants' War in 1525 . In 1625 the plague raged in the village. In 1635 she appeared again. Graben only had 80 inhabitants. The Swedish-French army camped at Graben in 1648. A first school operation in Graben can be proven in 1769. In 1772 there was a typhus epidemic (lazy fever ) with 30 deaths. Napoleon's soldiers occupied the trench in 1800.

The cathedral monastery of Augsburg exercised the land and local rule in Graben until 1803. With the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss the place came to Bavaria. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

19th and 20th centuries

From 1864 the military came to the Lechfeld, which belongs to Graben. Military flight operations began there from 1912. The Bundeswehr has been officially on site since July 7, 1956 . Since then, Lagerlechfeld has once again been a military airfield and home to teaching group A of the Information Technology School of the Bundeswehr and the 32nd Fighter Bomber Squadron .

In 1978, Graben came to the Lechfeld administrative community through the municipal reform . In 1994 the place became an independent municipality again.

Population development

The community grew from 1988 to 2008 by 1601 inhabitants or approx. 88%. Between 1988 and 2018, the municipality grew from 1,817 to 3,996 by 2,179 inhabitants or 119.9% ​​- the highest percentage increase in the district in the period mentioned.

politics

Andreas Scharf has been Mayor of Graben since 2008; this was confirmed on March 15, 2020 with 91.9% of the votes for a further six years in office. His predecessor was Hans Winkler (CSU).

In 2011, the internet mail order company amazon.de opened a logistics center in the Lechfeld industrial park, directly on the B17 . In April 2012, 1200 people were employed there, and around 1300 short-term employees during the 2011 Christmas season.
