About this picture
Bonstetten with Staufersberg from the south

Bonstetten is a municipality in the Swabian district of Augsburg and a member of the Welden administrative community .

geography

The community is located almost 20 kilometers northwest of Augsburg on the southern slope of the Stauffersberg in the Laugna valley , in the middle of the Augsburg nature park - Western forests , surrounded by extensive forests (45 percent of the community area is wooded).

history

From the term of office of the Augsburg bishop Heinrich II (1040-1063) an original notice on the transfer of several properties in "Bonestetten" has been preserved. This is dated to the time immediately before the bishop's death - i.e. to the year 1063. This is the first written mention of the place, which was then in the Duchy of Swabia .

In 1231 the Benedictine Abbey of St. Ulrich and Afra acquired the right of patronage in Bonstetten. In general, this monastery and the Cistercian convent Oberschönenfeld gained influence as landlords in the 12th and 13th centuries until the secularization of 1803. This is also reflected in today's coat of arms with the two golden clover-leaf crosses (St. Ulrich and Afra) and the white-red sloping beam (Oberschönenfeld) . Until the 16th century, most of Bonstetten's land and jurisdiction lay with the St. Ulrich and Afra monastery. In addition to the Oberschönenfeld monastery, smaller parts were also owned by the Augsburg cathedral chapter , the Heiligkreuz monastery and the hospital in Augsburg; until 1612, the property of the last three monasteries mainly went to the first two monasteries. At this time, the sovereignty of Bonstetten lay with the Margraviate of Burgau . The monasteries St. Ulrich and Afra and Oberschönenfeld each had their own Vogt and their own tavern in Bonstetten. It stayed that way until secularization.

In the course of secularization, Bonstetten fell to the then Electorate of Bavaria through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss in 1803 and was subordinated to the district court of Zusmarshausen .

From 1862 to 1929 Bonstetten belonged to the district office of Zusmarshausen and from 1929 to the district office of Augsburg , which from 1939 was called the district of Augsburg .

In recent history, the transition from the once purely rural settlement to today's preferred residential community with local recreational character has been reflected in particular.

population

From 1840 to 1939 the Bavarian State Office for Statistics recorded a fairly constant population of around 400 inhabitants. The diocese of Augsburg also reports 378 residents in 67 houses in 1850. In the same document, 64 houses are reported for 1599.

From 1939 to 1950 the number rose by almost half to almost 600 inhabitants - probably due to the influx of large numbers of refugees. After the number fell again to 475 inhabitants during the 1950s, a continuous increase began in 1961 and continues to this day. In 1970, with 571 inhabitants, the level of 1950 was almost reached again, only 17 years later 939 people lived in Bonstetten. In 2011 it was 1216, in 2018 the official number is given as 1404.

Between 1988 and 2018 the community grew from 968 to 1,404 by 436 inhabitants or 45%.
