location

The village is located about two and a half kilometers northwest of Babenhausen on the Riedel , between the valleys of Roth and Günz on the border of the municipality with the municipality of Oberroth in the Neu-Ulm district .

history

Unterschönegg was first mentioned in 1230 when a castle was built there. The village and the castle passed to the Augsburg bishopric in the 14th century . In the course of the conflict between the imperial cities and Ludwig the Bavarian , parts of the village were burned down and the castle destroyed. A castle stables can still be seen from the castle complex. The village, which was completely depopulated during the Thirty Years War , was repopulated around 1660.

At the beginning of the 19th century, like the entire area between Iller and Lech , Unterschönegg became part of Bavaria .

On May 1, 1978, the place, which until then belonged to the municipality of Oberroth (district of Neu-Ulm), was reclassified to Markt Babenhausen.
